Architectural Style
The exterior of the building is Second Empire Style.
This style was popular between 1855-1885, and can
be traced to France to the rein of Napoleon III. This
style of building had dormer windows, crest of roof
with iron trims. It was sometimes described as a
wedding cake, with the design of wide at the bottom
and getting smaller at the top.

Part 1
Concept Statement for Jenny Donahue and her 13 year old son
Bright colors, stained glass, exotic flowers and birds with the luxuries of Tiffany and decorative
wooden furniture will be the style. (Art Nouveau).This will be a warm, bright space starting in the living
room with Parquet floors that flow through the home. The walls will be shadowed with flowery
wallpapers and riveting looking statues and accessories. Light and Airy open kitchen with light colored
wooden cabinetry with stained glass doors. There will be a large office / craft room with a brilliant
cabinet display for all of the racing medals collected by Mrs. Donahue. Two of the three bedrooms will
be colored with a different vibrant color but will stay with the same design.
Williamss bedroom will be a little different. The walls will painted with white paint and one wall will
be a large chalk board for William to show his thoughts and learn with. The shades will be of a dull blue
color and will hold out the daylight if so desired. The floor will be covered with a thick shag carpeting of
blue and padded thoroughly. All of this will make the perfect design for Mrs. Donahue and her son
William.

Reflecting
This class has been an eye opener for me, I have leaned as I will with experience that I
need to look at the space that I have before selecting furniture for it. I realize that furniture comes
in different sizes but I didnt think it would have made such a big difference. Having a client
goals in mind have never been a question for me, but actually fulfilling those goals with the
proper things is a lot more difficult then it seemed. I learned that I have to be careful in
purchasing things without more research, there will be things that I wont be able to return and I
will end up eating the cost. There is a lot of work and research put into these presentation boards,
that along with spec sheets, justifications and all of the other things that had to be accomplished
long before actually decorating.

Reflection and compilation

My concept for this project was Art Nouveau, which was the clients preference in style. I
also took into consideration that the clients 13 year old son William is autistic. My goal was to
make the home comfortable for Mrs. Donahue but yet a functional space to teach her child and to
give him a room that was not busy. I think the large office / craft space is what was needed for
teaching, doing her scrapbooking and a place to stretch before a run.
Originally I chose some beautiful furniture that fit the client well, but in after drawing my
schematic plans, I found that the furniture was too big for the space, so I had to downsize the
furniture to fit properly. My client had three stories of building, so I felt that a powder room of
some sort was necessary on each floor considering that the Master bedroom was on the top floor,
Williams bedroom was on the second floor, and the main living space was on the bottom floor.
