Acknowledgement
Apart from the efforts of me, the success of any project depends largely on the encouragement and
guidelines of many others. We take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people who have been
instrumental in the successful completion of this project.
Although the Knowledge like electricity pervades everywhere yet the Teacher is the point where it shines as
light. We are extremely lucky to have an opportunity to blossom under the supervision and guidance of

Mr. Gur Vishal Sinha Sir,

(Department of Professional Development, JIET, Guna)

who helped us to grow like Phoenix out of the ashes of my shortcomings and failures. Their charismatic
personality delves in knowledge to bring zeal and enlightenment in the lives of not only his students but also
the humanity. To me, he is not mere a man but a current of love who treaded with me through thick and thin.
We would like to show my greatest appreciation to other faculty members and colleagues who supported us
in this Endeavour to the best of their possibilities. I am modestly bowing my head in the feet of divine Lord
to thank them all for their love, support and sacrifices.

Knowledge Management
Knowledge Management

Knowledge management (KM) comprises a range of strategies and practices used in an organization to
identify, create, represent, distribute, and enable adoption of insights and experiences. Such insights and
experiences comprise knowledge, either embodied in individuals or embedded in organizational processes or
practice. Knowledge Management efforts typically focus on organizational objectives such as improved
performance, competitive advantage, innovation, the sharing of lessons learned, integration and continuous
improvement of the organization. KM efforts overlap with organizational learning, and may be distinguished
from that by a greater focus on the management of knowledge as a strategic asset and a focus on
encouraging the sharing of knowledge.

Reasearch

KM emerged as a scientific discipline in the earlier 1990s. It was initially supported solely by practitioners,
when Scandia hired Leif Edvinsson of Sweden as the world’s first Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO). Hubert
Saint-Onge (formerly of CIBC, Canada), started investigating various sides of KM long before that. The
objective of CKOs is to manage and maximize the intangible assets of their organizations. Gradually, CKOs
became interested in not only practical but also theoretical aspects of KM, and the new research field was
formed. The KM ideas taken up by academics, such as Ikujiro Nonaka (Hitotsubashi University), Hirotaka
Takeuchi (Hitotsubashi University), Thomas H. Davenport (Babson College) and Baruch Lev (New York
University). In 2001, Thomas Stewart, former editor at FORTUNE Magazine, published a cover story
highlighting the importance of intellectual capital of organizations. Since its establishment, the KM discipline
has been gradually moving towards academic maturity. First, there is a trend towards higher cooperation
among academics; particularly, there has been a drop in single-authored publications. Second, the role of
practitioners has changed. Their contribution to academic research has been dramatically declining from 30%
of overall contributions up to 2002, to only 10% by 2009 (Serenko et al. 2010).

Repository
Knowledge Management and Developing Repositories for Management Books
Repository

A system with a complex domain model often benefits from a layer, such as the one provided by Data
Mapper (165), that isolates domain objects from details of the database access code. In such systems it can
be worthwhile to build another layer of abstraction over the mapping layer where query construction code is
concentrated. This becomes more important when there are a large number of domain classes or heavy
querying. In these cases particularly, adding this layer helps minimize duplicate query logic.

A Repository mediates between the domain and data mapping layers, acting like an in-memory domain
object collection. Client objects construct query specifications declaratively and submit them to Repository
for satisfaction. Objects can be added to and removed from the Repository, as they can from a simple
collection of objects, and the mapping code encapsulated by the Repository will carry out the appropriate
operations behind the scenes. Conceptually, a Repository encapsulates the set of objects persisted in a data
store and the operations performed over them, providing a more object-oriented view of the persistence
layer. Repository also supports the objective of achieving a clean separation and one-way dependency
between the domain and data mapping layers.

Libraries in India

Although often unacknowledged, libraries in India have always been playing a very important role in the
educational scenario of the country. Libraries have become an integral part of almost all educational
Knowledge Management and Developing Repositories for Management Books
institutes in India. Apart from the libraries of the particular institutes, various public libraries have also
come up to serve the needs of the educated. Most of these Indian libraries not only allow the members to
borrow books or other resources, but also provides reading rooms where they can study peacefully.

However over the years, the meaning of libraries have also changed to a great extent. It no longer signifies a
building where only books are collected. It can systematically store all sources of knowledge relevant for the
members. Moreover with advancement of technologies, most of the libraries in India are getting
interconnected. Some of these libraries in India also allow the members to check the availability of the books
or other resources online. But all the libraries in India do not follow uniform rules of providing membership
facility or lending books. Moreover as some of the libraries store information only on particular subjects, it
is important to know their details. Therefore on this page, we have tried to provide the details of various
Libraries in India. These libraries may be Social Science libraries, Science libraries, public libraries or any
other Indian library.

However if you come across any discrepancy, then please do write to us about it. We welcome any kind of
feedback that would improve the quality of this site, a site that strives to provide the best on the libraries in
India.

Importance of Repository

Repositories offer many benefits:

Knowledge Management and Developing Repositories for Management Books

 The content they house is more visible than the paper or commercially available digital version of the
same content. Repositories can store a variety of different forms of content – sometimes new forms,
as is the case with primary data. The ability to cross-search multiple formats in one search is helpful
to the researcher and can encourage new forms of research based on published evidence and data
 Materials such as PhD theses get many more consultations in a repository than the paper equivalent.
A paper thesis will often exist in a single copy, usually on closed access in a book stack. By
comparison, an electronic copy in an Open Access repository may well receive dozens of downloads
each month. This is good for the author because it gives them, as a young scholar, greater visibility in
their subject area
 At a subject level, repositories have the potential to pull together content from a variety of different
sources and so to become an important reference source which underpins future research in the
subject
 At an institutional level, university strategy documents are beginning to cite the institutional
repository alongside the institutional publications database as core pieces of their research
infrastructure
 The emergence of new world and university rankings for repositories can only raise awareness at an
institutional level of the importance of making research content generally available
 In a world of social computing and social networking sites, repositories have the potential to be more
sustainable and long term, given that they are managed by institutions or scholarly bodies with a
mission to undertake and disseminate research. It is repository managers, authors and institutions
who need to support this vision in order to make it a reality.

Types of Repository
 Subject-based repositories, including ArXiv, one of the most extensive subject-based repositories in the
world in the fields of physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer sciences and quantitative biology. In

Knowledge Management and Developing Repositories for Management Books

the field of biomedical sciences, UK PubMed Central (PMC) both mirrors the data held on the US
PubMed Central site and acts as an Open Access repository for most peer-reviewed research.
 Institutional repositories, run by universities: University College London (UCL) has a good example of a
UK-based institutional research repository. One of the most prominent is that run by Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) which provides access to the publication output of the institution.
Registered users can set up email alerts to notify them of newly added relevant content

See the SHERPA Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) for different types of repository.

Types of Material Found in Repositories

A wide variety of material is available in repositories, including:

 Journal articles. Copyright permissions allowing, these can comprise the accepted version of a paper,
which is the version accepted for publication incorporating referees’ comments; the published version,
which is the version created by the publisher; or the submitted version, which has been submitted to a
journal for peer review
 Research theses, especially PhD theses. The UK service to support e-theses is EThOS, which offers a
wealth of guidance
 Images, sound recordings, video and films
 Materials such as working papers and reports, which are not published in the traditional sense, but are
often heavily used in repositories because they are easy to find
 Primary data: statistical tables which underpin discussion in a published journal article or book, or
readings from a scientific experiment or laboratory notebooks accompanying clinical or experimental
work. For ‘big science’, international collaborations or partnerships between research funders may well
cater for the digital curation of data. In the UK, there are data archives and the possibility of future
collaborations between universities which will tackle issues around the storage and availability such
materials.
