Abstract
General relativity is a highly complicated eld theory both
classically and quantum mechanically. Even though a large
number of classical solutions exists, a general classi cation of the
space of solutions has never been achieved. These lectures brie y
review our current understanding of classical and quantum
gravity in three spacetime dimension, general relativity in two
spatial dimensions plus time. In three spacetime dimensions,
general relativity drastically simpli es, with no propagating local
degrees of freedom. Nevertheless, many of the di cult
conceptual problems of quantizing gravity are still present. In
this review, I summarize the rather large body of work that has
gone towards quantizing (2+1)-dimensional vacuum gravity.
