Persephone’s Story
Demeter, the goddess of fertility and
agriculture, and Zeus, the king of Gods
are Persephone’s parents.
Persephone was playing in a field one
day when she was abducted by
Hades, and taken to the underworld.
Hades kidnapped her to make her his
wife.Demeter was upset because she
could not find Persephone.

Persephone’s Story Cont.
To get back at the God’s for not helping
her find Persephone, Demeter did not let
any of the plants grow on Earth. Zeus
realized that if Demeter stayed angry, no
one would have any food. Zeus sent
Hermes to the Underworld to get
Persephone, but Persephone had already
eaten pomegranate, the fruit of marriage.
To get Persephone back, Zeus and
Hades worked out an agreement.

Persephone’s Story Cont.
In the agreement, Persephone was to
be with Demeter for 2/3 of the year, and
she would be with Hades for 1/3 of the
year. When Persephone is with
Demeter, Demeter is happy, so the
Earth is fertile for 2/3 of the year. When
Persephone is with Hades, Demeter is
mad, so the Earth is not fertile. This
myth explains the change of the
seasons.

Other Facts
Persephone’s other name is Kore. She is
also referred to as the Maiden of Beautiful
Ankles.
In the Oddessey, she is referred to as the
Iron Queen.
Persephone is in two other myths, Adonis
and Pirithous and Theseus.
Some people think that Persephone ate
the pomegranate on purpose, so she
could break away from her mom, Demeter.
