ts spring. The air is warming as we escape our winter hibernation and embrace the warm sunshine.
The family vacation is circled on the calendar. Both
students and teachers have already started their
countdown to the last day of school. Oh those hazy, but
perhaps not so lazy days are approaching. Indeed, summer
is on its way, and so is the season for camps.
No matter what our age, we still recall the excitement
of trading in our schoolbooks and the daily class routine
for activities we enjoy; focusing on what we want to do,
not what we had to do. After 180 days in school, the summer months offer precious time to have fun and learn new
skills without the constraints of homework or the pressures of grades. This time provides children with esteembuilding activities and enhances social skills. Having
school friends attend the same camp provides children the
opportunity to spend time with their friends in a setting

Lt. Gov. Guadagno Visits Millville

New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Kim Guadagno visited the
Glassworks Complex in Millville on Monday, April 25, to speak to
area businesspeople on topics related to doing business in the
southern part of New Jersey. The event was hosted by a consortium
of nine area chambers of commerce, including those from Vineland,
Millville and Bridgeton and the Chamber by the Bay. Other participating chambers represented Camden, Cape May, Gloucester,
Salem and Atlantic counties. Guadagnos speech was preceded by a

small loan to start their business and they pay back the loan in 6 months. Most of
these loans come from grants which are donated by individuals The Woman's club

Landis Sewerage Authority Announces Earth Day

Poster Contest Winners
The Landis Sewerage Authority (LSA) again recognizes students from the City
of Vineland for their Earth Day Posters. At its April 18 board meeting, the students
received a recognition certificate and gift card for their efforts. With seven winners
this year, this is the 22nd year LSA has had an Earth Day Poster program with the
Middle Schools. The total number of awards issued over the 22 years is 116,
including these students and it is estimated, with 200 posters per year, that over
4,000 students have been involved. The goal of the Earth Day poster contest is to
have middle school children think and express their ideas about the environment,
especially the water environment.

The Togetherhood program at the

Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA/YMCA
of Vineland is a new program that
inspires the community and Y members
to help others. The idea of the latest
Togetherhood project began when
Bernadette Lunsford, the Ys Third Party
administrator, decided to send a care
package to her son, who is in Egypt with
the US Army. As she and other Y staffers
talked about this, they thought of other
colleagues whose relatives are serving
now, as well as of former Y employees.
Community members and current
YMCA employees recently gathered to
pack care packages to send to men and
women in various branches of the armed
services. The boxes included snacks, puzzle books, magazines, stationary, sanitary
wipes, pens, shaving razors, dental kits,
socks, and more. There were enough
items donated to this project to fill 16 boxes, enough for thirty-two soldiers. Each
recipient is someone known to those who donated or packed these articles.
The boxes were shipped by Support the Troops New Jersey, which has sent well
over 20,000 pounds to military personnel since 2007. Regina and Jim Shuster run
this enterprise from their own home in Pittsgrove.
The Togetherhood program is coordinated by Jackie Martine, the YMCAs director of Annual Giving and Volunteer Engagement. Those interested in volunteering
for future initiatives are encourage to call her at 856-691-0030, ext. 123.

Jersey Stronger. Panel members included
Dr. Michael Gorman, president of Salem
County College; Mitch Zitomer, a prominent Realtor from Atlantic City; Les Vail,
president of the Gloucestor County
Chamber of Commerce; Vicki Clark, president of the Cape May County Chamber of
Commerce; and Ken Pustizzi, president of
SNJ Today, who represented Cumberland
County.
The panel discussion and Lt. Gov.
Guadagnos speech were held in the 250seat auditorium at the Glassworks
Complex, the former Wheaton Industries
headquarters and current home to SNJ
Today and 30 other businesses.
Guadagno spoke about her opposition to
an increase in the minimum wage to $15
per hour. She discussed the work of the
Red Tape Commission, which she oversees,
and how it can only realistically be expected to aid businesses with state regulatory
issues and not local government issues.
Guadagno talked about how tax credit
incentives in Atlantic City cant and
shouldnt be extended to the Atlantic City
Airport (located in Egg Harbor Township)
because they are not needed due to the
prime location and size of the airport, which
should be marketing incentive enough.
She deferred to U.S. Rep. Frank
LoBiondo, who was in attendance, to speak
of the importance of the airport for our
nations security, as it is home to the New
Jersey Air National Guards 177th Fighter
Wing. LoBiondo said that should a terrorist
attack take place anywhere on the East
Coast, F-16s can be deployed out of the AC
Airport and be in Washington, D.C. or New
York in as little as eight minutes.
Guadagno explained Governor Christies
position on a state takeover in Atlantic City,
an issue that impacts the entire state, especially the towns within 30 miles of the
resort.
After her speech, Guadagno walked
through the crowd before making her way
to the SNJ Today television studios, where
she was interviewed by SNJ Todays COO
and CFO, Frank DiMauro.
The interview topics ranged from her
role as Lt. Gov. as she defines it to how
southern New Jerseys lower eight counties
can close the income gap with their northern neighbors to whether she is considering a run for governor since Gov. Christies
second term ends in January 2018.

night at 5:30 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m. on

Cinco de Mayo with fun-filled festivals and
parades that can last all day. Vineland, having a large Latino community, commemorates this day by helping to throw the 154th
anniversary of Cinco de Mayo.
We are remembering Cinco de
MayoWe defeated the French army in
Puebla. It is very important to have [the
Cinco de Mayo Festival], said Efrain Muniz,
Puebla native and local businessman, when
asked about the importance of celebrating
Cinco de Mayo in Vineland. When Muniz
was growing up as a child, he would attend
festivals for Cinco de Mayo, just like the fes-

tivals being held on or around May 5. Muniz

is very proud of where he came from and
being able to host such an event is a tremendous honor for him.
The Cinco de Mayo festival has been
occurring for the past five years, but this
year, no one was willing to take on the task.
Cinco de Mayo is such a commercialized
holiday now, that many people, even those of
non-Mexican descent, can celebrate and
profit from the different revenues that the
day may bring.
Anyone can take Cinco de Mayo because
they are going to profit from it, Muniz said.

So, when nobody decided to organize the

festival, Russell Swanson, a former festival
volunteer, mentioned the dilemma to Muniz
because for the past five years, La Brava
1440 has helped sponsor the event.
La Brava 1440 is a local Mexican radio
station that is run by Muniz and his cohost
Alejandra Saravia, who has worked with
Muniz for the past seven years.
Mayor Ruben Bermudez reached out to
Muniz to see if he was interested in hosting
this years festival. La Brava 1440 stepped up
to the plate and accepted the task, on one
condition. Muniz wanted Landis Avenue to
be blocked off so that the festival can be
safely held on the streets and families will
not have to worry about busy traffic.
Bermudez agreed to this request so La Brava
accepted this responsibility and is now the

Celebrated in
Bridgeton on May 1
In Bridgeton, Cinco de Mayo is an
important holiday to the Mexican community in the town and throughout
Cumberland County. But more importantly, it is an opportunity to join in a fun
and entertaining cultural experience.
Since Cinco de Mayo (May 5) falls on
a Thursday, many cities, including
Bridgeton, host festivals during the preceding weekend. Bridgetons Cinco de
Mayo Cultural Fest will be held on
Sunday, May 1 from 18 p.m. in downtown Bridgeton (corner of Commerce at
Laurel streets). A Beer Garden will be
set up on the corner of Cohansey and
Washington streets.

Mayo festival in Vineland.
This year, Muniz has big plans for the
festival. Muniz said he is expecting around
10,000 people to attend. It is hoped to be
bigger and better than the past festivals that
have occurred over the years.
We are going to have music, four bands,
and then some people that come from New
York, Muniz stated. Last year, there was
only one band and the performance was at
the end of the day, so Muniz has decided to
bring on more entertainment and to have
them play throughout the event. There will
also be many vendors selling authentic
Mexican food, among other things.
During the interview, Muniz mentioned
that there will be show horses attending the
event and also, a member of the Mexican
consulate from Philadelphia. Vineland also
has seven Mexican businesses, located on
Landis Avenue, that will be helping with this
years festival.
Some might wonder how there is going to
be 10,000 people in Vineland for this festival. Muniz said, We are going to advertise it
in Philadelphia, Atlantic Citydifferent radio
stations, so that he can reach his goal of
10,000 attendees for the Cinco de Mayo
Festival.
Anyone and everyone can attend and
experience the Mexican pride and heritage that will be celebrated at the festival. It will be fun for all ages and there is
no cost to attend this event. It will be
held on Landis Avenue on Sunday, May 1,
from noon to 8 p.m.

GET ENGAGED: CREATIVE SPACES

On Saturday, April 30, the N.J. State Council on the Arts and the
Cumberland County Cultural & Heritage commission are teaming up to
host a discussion forum Creative Spaces: Getting Engaged Locally,
which will take place at the Luciano Conference Center at Cumberland
County College in Vineland.
The event will be moderated by Karen Pinzolo, executive director of the
South Jersey Cultural Alliance, and is to feature four panelists including
Tara Rea, president of The FAF Coalition (a non-profit creative placemaking organization); Melanie Stewart, Associate Dean of Performing Arts at
Rowan University; Lauren Otis, executive director of ArtWorks Trenton;
and Mike Cagno, executive director of the Noyes Museum of Art of
Richard Stockton University.
The forum, which is a part of a state-wide series to spread sustainable
community development through art, will include a Q&A with the panelists. There will also be networking opportunities for artists from across
New Jersey as well as a lunch and dessert reception.

studio, celebrates 10 years of Pilates with
International Pilates Day. Body Benefits,
located in The Lincoln Plaza, has been providing quality Pilates programs to Vineland

Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon,
they will honor the work of Joseph and
Clara Pilates with an open house event.
Pilates Day is an annual international, community event celebrated every year on the
first Saturday in May. Body Benefits mission is to bring appreciation and awareness
of the many benefits of the Pilates Method.
This year's Pilates Day is all about Pilates
Bliss, emphasizing and spotlighting the joy
experienced through Pilates in health,
community, and quality of life.

Workshops in Bridgeton Help

Residents Protect Water
Residents of the Ingerman/Bridgeton
Commons housing community learned
about sustainable ways to manage storm
water in their neighborhoods recently. The
American Littoral Society, in partnership
with Rutgers University and Rutgers
Cooperative Extension of Cumberland
County, hosted two workshops to introduce

storm water management to the community. Dr. Chris Obropta of Rutgers presented
on rain barrels, while Dr. Sal Magiafico
from Rutgers Cooperative Extension presented about rain gardens. The workshops
provided residents of Bridgeton Commons
the opportunity to sign up for a rain barrel
or a rain garden to be professionally
installed on their properties.
Rain barrels are plastic barrels attached
to a downspout outside. When it rains, the
barrels collect the rain water. People can
then use the rain water instead of drinking
water to water plants or other outside uses.
Rain gardens are shallow depressions on
the lawn or other low lying drainage area
that act as capture basins for rain water.

They are filled with water loving plants

that soak up rain during a rain storm.
These plants help to capture and process
runoff. The water and pollution in the
runoff is captured and processed in the
plants instead of polluting our waterbodies.
In addition, rain gardens are beautiful and
help attract wildlife. In all, 16 people signed
up for rain barrels and eight signed up for a
rain garden. The barrels and gardens will
be installed throughout this year.
This project was made possible through
a grant with National Fish and Wildlife
Federation. It is part of a two-year grant
project that seeks to educate the public in

partnership with Vineland Municipal
Alliance/GCADA, is holding a Public
Service Announcement (PSA) contest on
the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
Here's a chance to show off your talent by
creating an original Public Service
Announcement (PSA) about solutions for
the areas prescription drug abuse problems. The PSA must be an original concept
and be creative, as well as have the ability
to educate and inspire. The PSA should
focus on prevention strategies and solutions to help the community be proactive in
stopping this problem in the community.
The theme is Be SMART, Dont Abuse
Prescription Drugs
Local middle and high school students
in Vineland, NJ can work in groups up to
four to create their PSA video. It should be
students original work, with no copyrighted songs or images. The PSA should be no
longer than sixty seconds. See rubric and
tips for developing the PSA. Videos should
include students names, their school, and
teachers name in a credits section.
Students could win a prize of $100 in
gift cards (for each group) in each category
(Middle and High School)! Contest winners will be honored in an awards ceremony, which will be broadcasted on the radio
and YouTube.

LoBiondo Announces Nearly

$500,000 for Millville Airport
U.S. Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo
(NJ-02), Chairman of the House Aviation
Subcommittee, has announced $490,975 in
federal funding from the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) to the Delaware River
& Bay Authority for the Millville municipal
airport. The funding will go toward the
rehabilitation of runways and improvement
of lighting system to enhance safe airfield
operations during low visibility conditions.
Over the past decade we have made
substantial improvements to South Jerseys
community airports which have helped
create opportunities for more businesses,
more jobs and more economic growth in
our region. Todays funding for Millville
airport will further enhance safety operations, ensuring businesses relying on our
transportation network are able to move
their goods and services efficiently and
effectively. I will continue to work closely
with local officials and the FAA to bring
additional federal resources to Cumberland
County and our region, said LoBiondo.
Safety and customer service are two of
our core values and this funding will be
used to update and enhance lighting on
Runway 10-28, said Scott A. Green, executive director for the Authority.
The federal funding is awarded from the
FAAs Airport Improvement Program.
Aviation demand at the airport must justify
the projects, which must also meet federal
environmental and procurement requirements.

2015 EP HENRY

New Jersey Motorsports Park has been

selected as one of the top 5 favorite race
tracks in the country. Readers of Speed
Sport Magazine and nationalspeedsportnews.com selected their favorites in the
fifth edition of Speed Sports My Favorite
Track survey conducted in late February
and early March. Many of Americas race
tracks created social media campaigns
specifically to generate votes in the My
Favorite Track competition. NJMP came in
fourth overall and second in the road
course category.
It is very exciting to have earned this
recognition once again says Mark
Verrastro General Manager of NJMP. Last
year we finished in the top 10, this year we
moved up to the top 5, we want to thank
our fans for taking the time to vote and
show their support for NJMP.

85 of Millville, passed away Wednesday
afternoon, March 23, 2016, at the Bishop
McCarthy Residence in Vineland, after a
brief illness. Born in Millville to the late
Thomas and Carmella (Lamanteer) Pelosi,
Pauline was a lifelong resident of Millville.

Melissa C. Myers, 47 of Millville, passed

away unexpectedly on Saturday in

Ivan Abad Arcaya Sr (Papo), was born

in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on Monday,
September 1, 1952 and died in Vineland,
NJ on Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 63
years of age.
Beverly (Rubin) Frohwein, 83, of Jupiter,
Florida and, for a long time, Vineland, NJ,
passed away on March 24, 2016 in Jupiter.
Beverly was born in Philadelphia, PA to
Rose Reiss and Morris Rubin on October
18, 1932. She went to Temple University,
graduating in 1954. She dedicated her life
to caring for and raising her family.
Mary Bernice Lopez (Burchett), 69, of
Millville, passed away at home, peacefully
surrounded by her loving family on
Thursday March 24th, after an extended
illness. Born and raised in Yeager, West
Virginia, she has been a Millville resident
for over 50 years.

Ziotas. He has one sister, Aspasia (Soula)
Diamantopoulos (George Diamantopoulos)
and two nephews Lucas and Yianni in
Thessaloniki, Greece.
Helen K. Carlisle of Shores at Wesley
Manor in Ocean City passed away in peace
on Good Friday, March 25, 2016. She was
96 years of age. Mrs. Carlisles passing during Holy Week is especially meaningful
given her belief in the Good News of
Christs resurrection.
Doris D. Dee Dee (Green) Pierce, 76, of
Millville died on Friday, March 25, 2016 at
her home. Dee Dee was born in Norfolk,
VA to the late Charles Green and Louise
Randolph Green. In the early 1950s, she
moved to New York and later Philadelphia.
In her early thirties, Doris had become a
resident of Bridgeton until she moved to
Millville 15 years ago.
Mary Rieck (Fisher) Peek, age 96, of

Kristina Beatty-Quiao, of Rosenhayn,

passed away on Easter morning, March 27,
2016 at home. The Angels came and led
"Tina" to be with the Lord. Although her
family and friends were heartbroken, her
niece, Sage, reminded us all, "Not to worry
that God had a plan for Aunt Tina."
Frank A. Buono, 90, of Vineland, passed
away on March 27, 2016, surrounded by his
family. Born in Atlantic City on May 2,
1925, he was the son of the late Frank and
Anna (Morley) Buono. Frank was a mason
in his early years and later owned & operated his own construction company,
Countryside Construction & Design in
Phoenix, AZ. Frank resided in Mays
Landing after serving in the US Navy during World War II, with the rank of Motor
Machinist's 2nd class. He moved to
Vineland, where he resided with his late
wife, Virginia (Zerra) Buono.
Marjorie G. Miller, 91, of Newfield, NJ
passed away early Sunday morning March
27, 2016 at home where she had been
under the care of Granddaughter, Andrea
Chait & hospice. Mrs. Miller was born in
Johnston, PA, raised in Vineland and was a
longtime Newfield resident. She was the
daughter of the late Violet (Reed) &
Charles Gochnour and the wife of the late
A. Larry Miller who died in 2003.
Maria Halij, age 102, of Vineland, died
peacefully on Monday, March 28, 2016.
She was born in Ukraine and immigrated
to the USA in 1949.
Charles R. Bob Shull, 75, of Cedarville
died on Monday, March 28, 2016 at Inspira

Girls In Action group who helped out during Clean-Up Day on April 16 and the
Vineland High School Interact Club students who helped out with Planting Day
this past Saturday. We recognized the PAL
girls at a special appreciation event this
past Monday evening at the PAL building.
I also want to thank Design Team
Chairperson Maryam Nassiri and our
Maintenance Man/Downtown
Ambassador Wayne Joslin for their hard
work in helping to coordinate our CleanUp and Planting Days, as well as our role
in the Adopt-a-Block project. A special
shout-out goes to Ivy Acres, which has
donated the plants all these years for our
Planting Days and, this year, has donated
the flowers for our downtown hanging
baskets. Well be recognizing them in a
special way at a later date.

just in time to make our downtown focal
points look their finest for the Main Street
New Jersey Downtown Institute that
Main Street Vineland is hosting and is taking place Wednesday of this weekjust as

tremendous opportunity for us to show

Basketball Team Receives Christian Testimomy

Award
Cumberland Christian School's Varsity Girls
Basketball team has accepted the Tri-State Christian
Testimony Award. This award is given to a team who
shows Christ-like characteristics. Some of these
characteristics are good sportsmanship, humility,
competitiveness, and kindness. This is the second
time this year that Cumberland Christian School has
been awarded the Christian Testimony Award. The
school thanks the parents, fans, and coaches that
have positively impacted the girls to exhibit this
type of play this season.

Foundation Awards Full College Scholarships to

Bridgeton 9th Graders
Twenty-three 9th graders
from Bridgeton High School
have been awarded full
scholarships to Rowan
University, Montclair State
University, The College of
New Jersey, or Saint Peter's
University by the Give
Something Back Foundation
(GSBF). The announcement
was made to the students
recently by GSBF, a nonprofit organization that provides
mentors and scholarships to
help Pell Grant-eligible kids
go to college and graduate
in four years, debt free.
Each Bridgeton student
completed the GSBF application process, which included attending a family information meeting, completing a College Cost Estimator as well as an extensive
online application, obtaining school and community recommendations, and participating in in-person interviews in order to be eligible for the scholarship.
GSBF was established through the generosity of Bob Carr, founder, chairman
and CEO of Princeton-based Heartland Payment Systems. Carr received a $250
scholarship grant from the Lockport Womans Club in Illinois in 1963 when he was
accepted as a student at the University of Illinois, and he vowed someday he would
give back when he was able. His foundation partners with high schools and colleges in Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania. The program has provided
scholarships and mentoring for hundreds of students.
The BHS 9th graders are among GSBFs inaugural class in New Jersey.
Students must maintain a B average throughout high school, participate in a
mentoring program, and attend GSBF-sponsored workshops to continue in the program. As seniors, students must complete the FAFSA and be accepted into one of
the partnering colleges. The GSBF is very excited to provide this opportunity to
BHS students and is working to expand their college partnerships and opportunities for students.
The recipients of the Give Something Back Foundation scholarship from BHS
include: Shania D. Bell, Andrea Cruz-Alavez, Daniel Cruz, Julisa Y. Garcia, Mirelis E.
Guerrero, Luiz M. Hernandez, Lakendra C. Herring, Jair Hoyos, Toni-Ray P. McLean,

Education Center had 25 students compete recently in 13 various programrelated competitions at the SkillsUSA
Competition. Josh Loew, a senior at
Cumberland Regional High School (pictured above), won a first-place award in
welding and will be competing in the
National SKILLS USA competition in
June in Lousiville, Kentucky.
SkillsUSA is a national organization
serving teachers and high school and
college students who are preparing for
careers in technical, skilled and service
occupations. Programs include local,
state and national competitions in
which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills.
The mission of SkillsUSA is to
empower its members to become
world-class workers, leaders and
responsible American citizens. More
than 600 business, industry and labor

with reading about basketball, writing about
basketball, and using basketball in math

About: For the past seven years, this
camp has provided children entering kindergarten through 6th grade with a safe and
caring environment while keeping them
busy with activities, crafts, swim time, and
fun! Getting children involved in the process
encourages them to try new things. Some of
the pickiest eaters began to try new foods
when they participated in the cooking class.
Campers enjoy an afternoon cool break
with ice pops or ice cream treats. New this
year is more free time and planned activities
instead of computer time. Also, gym time has
a new name called Praise and Movement led
by a new staff member. Special to Summer
Safari this season are trips to for campers to

opportunities to do fine arts rather than
making crafty things or cut and paste activities. They flourish in the positive, nurturing

This year classes will be kept small, so
that staff may offer fine arts instruction to
each student at his/her individual level.
We love seeing each childs delight and
the smiles of accomplishment as our students become engaged in MHDA creative

The Levoy Theatre This years Multi-cultural Festival will be held at the
Levoy Theatre on Friday evening, April 29. This is the culminating event
of Millvilles annual Multi-cultural Week and showcases dynamic cultural

he brig Greyhound is probably

not a recognizable ship to most
people, yet it served as a significant part of this areas stand
against British taxation of the colonies.
The brig was carrying tea from
Londons East India Company up the
Delaware River. Its cargo was bound for
Philadelphia and, before reaching its destination, Greyhound docked briefly at the
port in Lewes, Delaware, where Captain J.
Allen was warned that the reception waiting for him in the City of Brotherly Love
would not be in keeping with
Philadelphias renowned nickname. Word
had circulated that recently the ship Polly
had been refused permission to dock there
amid threats by a group of residents.
The considerable tax levied by the
British on tea was meeting with colonial
resistance, most notably in Boston where
patriots destroyed a ships cargo as a result
of the September decision by the First
Continental Congress to ban British
imports, including East India tea.
According to John Warner Barber in his
text Historical Collections of the State of
New Jersey, Shortly after the destruction
of the tea in Boston, the East India tea
company determined to try whether they
might not meet with better success in
sending a cargo into the Cohansey. And
now Captain Allen faced the prospect of
encountering the same threatening situation witnessed in Boston when delivering
his cargo. So, rather than sail directly to
Philadelphia, he chose a stopover at a New
Jersey port.
William McMahons South Jersey
Towns reports that Allen knew of a Tory,
someone sympathetic to the British, who
resided in Greenwich, New Jersey, and
whose home was close to the towns
wharf. The Tory, Daniel Bowen, gave permission to store the ships cargo in his
basement until Allen received instructions
on how he should proceed.
What Bowen overlooked, McMahon
points out, was that Cumberland County
was then the home of patriots who were
already talking about separation from
England By December 13, word had
spread throughout the town that British
tea was being stored in Bowens cellar,
which incited residents.
McMahon quotes from a journal entry
by Greenwich resident Philip Vickers

Fithian, which says that a county meeting

was held at Cohansie [sic] Bridge and
chose a committee consisting of 35 citizens to examine into and take proper care
of the aforesaid goods. The older members of the group favored a cautious
approach to dealing with the stored cargo.
The more militant and youthful element
decided to take matters in their own
hands, McMahon writes.
According to Michael J. Chiarappas
essay, Colonial Greenwich: The
Emergence of a Delaware Bay Port
Community, contained in the Vineland
Historical and Antiquarian Societys collection, Cumberland County officials
endorsed [the First Continental
Congresss] non-importation measures on
December 22, 1774 That night, a group
of youthful residents, dressed as Indians,
rendezvoused with another group that had
first assembled at the home of the Howell
twins, Lewis and future New Jersey governor Richard, in Shiloh and who were also
disguised as Native Americans.
McMahon reports, Together the
Indians rode to the house of the Tory
Bowen, broke open the cellar door and
tossed out boxes of tea to willing hands
who carried them to Market Square. Soon
a huge bonfire lit up the central part of the
village. As the flames leaped higher and
the significance of the action became
known, others from the town gathered to
cheer. When the fires died, the tea burners
mounted their horses and with loud
whoops raced down Greate Street and out
of the village. There was no attempt to
conceal identities, so all the youths who
took part were known by name.
According to one story that circulates
about the event, one of the tea burners
happened to be an avid tea drinker.
Reportedly disturbed by the fact that the
mission he was helping to carry out would
result in the destruction of the cargo
housed at Bowens residence, he made the
decision to help himself to some of the tea
before it was destroyed, taking as much as
he was able to carry. It seems that his coconspirators, well aware of his penchant
for that nights bounty, allowed him to
walk away with a considerable supply and
a less-than-guilty conscience for what he
was doing. I

Delsea Senior Wins Award

Congratulations to Delsea Regional High School senior,

Destini Clark, on receiving the Gloucester County
Education Association's "Friend of Education" award on
Friday, April 11 at Scotland Run Country Club.
This award is presented annually to educators, elected
officials, and/or community members who have shown
exemplary service to public education. Past recipients have
included Washington Township Mayor Barbara Wallace,
New Jersey Education Association Vice-President Marie
Blistan, and Gloucester County Library System Director
Anne Wodnick.
The theme for the award celebration this year was,
"Education and Empowering Students Through Business
Partnerships" Destini was recognized for the work that she
does with DECA, both in Delsea and on the state level.
Destini is the New Jersey State DECA president, the Senior
Class president, the National Honor Society Vice President,
and was voted Homecoming Queen this past Octobe.

The Vineland High

School Academic Team has
made VHS history, officially
becoming the winningest
team ever for the school.
The varsity team, consisting of seniors Sarah Gibney
(captain), Greg Hughes,
Justin Malme, William
Reichard and Sejal
Menghani, won four first
place and one second
place trophies out of the
five primary regional competitions this season.
I have been coaching the VHS Academic Team for 10 years, and the unique
feature of our winning combination is that despite the fact that each member is
knowledgeable in all areas, they are each a specialist in one of the competition
areas, said coach Vicki Yeager.
Vineland is part of the South Jersey-Cape Atlantic Region group, along with
Absegami, Atlantic City, Buena, Cape May Tech, Cedar Creek, Egg Harbor
Township, Hammonton, Holy Spirit, Mainland, Millville, Oakcrest, Pinelands,
Wildwood Catholic and Woodstown. Most competitions feature more than 20
teams competing simultaneously. Each school can bring two teams comprised of
four students each, with one alternate player intended for substitutions between
rounds. Generally, there are three rounds consisting of thirty questions each, in
such categories as math, science, literature, history, geography, spelling, art,
music, sports, current events and pop culture.
Vineland finished first out of 19 teams at the Millville Mind Mash, first out of 28
teams at the Egg Harbor Twp. Academic Triathalon, second out of 17 teams at the
Oakcrest High School Brain Brawl, first out of 20 teams at the Buena Amazing
Race, and first out of 27 teams at the Atlantic City Brain Brawl By the Bay.
