If you've ever felt as though life doesn't make much sense or as though you're driKing kind of aimlessly, then what
you're missing is real passion. Having passion in your life is oKen the secret to nding real happiness and there are
countless reasons that this is the case. If you're wondering what it means to have real passion and why it's so
important then read on and re-discover what really ma5ers.
What is Passion?
When we're talking about passions, we're not talking about sex. Sure, it's important to have passion in your
relaDonship and this is one type of passion but it is also not the only type of passion there is.
Passion then refers instead to anything that you feel super excited about and anything that makes you eager to
get out of bed in the morning. Everyone has dierent passions and there's no limit on what you can be passionate
about, or on how many passions you can have. For some, music is the burning passion that drives them while for
others it's more about teaching, or math or Star Trek.
Really it doesn't ma5er what you're passionate about but what ma5ers is that you have things that you feel
completely excited about and that you let yourself feel that way about them.
Why Passion is So Important
GET THE RIGHTS TO THIS TYPE OF

10
Well for starters, having a passion even one that other people don't nd exciDng will give you tons to look
forward to and to be interested in. Even if you passion is just 'acDon lms', it means that you'll have something to
do in the evenings (watch old acDon lms) and things to look forward to excitedly (Die Hard).
Likewise, passions tell us about ourselves and they force us to grow. If you're passionate about music then you'll
no doubt pracDce playing an instrument which will help you to develop dexterity, Dming, rhythm and creaDvity
and which will make you more a5racDve even to the opposite sex.
Passions can also give us direcDon in life. If you feel passionately about stopping global warming then that gives
you a mission. No longer are you just living life from day to day, instead you are working towards a goal and for a
cause that's bigger than yourself. This is what makes people feel moDvated and important.
So if you're wondering what it's all about, you're asking the wrong quesDon. The quesDon should be: what's it all
about for you. Time to nd out.
11
SomeDmes, life can feel a li5le bit like you're just trying to survive. If you come home from work every day feeling
Dred and listless only to lie on the couch and if you are constantly stressed and aggravated while you're at work
then what is it that you're living for?
The problem is rest. Many of us work so that we can rest. But then when we do get a chance to rest, we don't feel
very rewarded because ulDmately rest normally just means staring at the TV. That's hardly rewarding!
So what do you do instead? How do you make yourself 'come alive again'? Simple: you re-engage with your
passions.
We All Had Dreams
All of us have dreams and passions. At some point, these dreams and ambiDons are what put you on the path
you're on now. Perhaps your aim was to work that job just long enough to earn the money you need to fund your
dream. Or perhaps you're working because you found a partner you loved and you were willing to postpone your
ambiDons for them.
12
Neither of these aCtudes are wrong but if you have lost sight of why you started puCng in the Dme and work in
the rst place, then something has gone wrong. If you've lost a reason to work, then you will just be listless and
cruising through life.
So what do you do? You reignite those passions and you chase aKer them again!
Ask yourself: why is it that you do what you do? Where do you see yourself in the future? What are your beliefs
and your values? What were the things that gave you direcDon when you were a young teenager? And how can
you get yourself back on track?
The problem is that many of us feel that our passions are 'silly' or maybe they're 'childish' or they're irresponsible.
Thus we end up just burying them for more respectable aims like 'being area manager'. But who said that being
area manager of a staple company was more respectable than being an acDvist or an arDst?
The point is that you don't have to give up your job or your responsibiliDes. You just have to keep the burning
passion alive so that you're pursuing it when you can. When you do this and you remember the 'why', then life
will have meaning and direcDon
13
Most of us admire and look up to people who are highly passionate and rey. SomeDmes they might frustrate or
aggravate us sure, but deep down that's oKen because we wish we could be them: we wish we could follow our
passions, speak our mind and live life to the fullest.
Well guess what: you can. Being passionate isn't a ma5er of geneDcs it's a choice. And once you know that
that's what you want, it's something that's very much worth working towards. Read on and let's look at some
things you can do to start living a more passionate life right now
Be Who You Really Are With No Apologies
The most important thing you need to do to be truly passionate, is to be who you really are and to not apologize
for it. That means that you should follow what interests you no ma5er how weird or strange it is. When you do
what you love, you give it 100% and when you give it 100% then you do it be5er. Don't do the thing that's
expected of you do the thing that you really want to do. Be Billy Elliot!
Speak Your Mind
This extends generally to stopping worrying what people think. NoDce how passionate people always seem to be
shouDng or proclaiming their love? They are in lms and TV anyway. This is because they are following their heart

While there are posiDve and negaDve aspects of each personality type, research has recently shown that being
more opDmisDc can actually be benecial. NegaDvity breeds negaDvity. This means that being negaDve or a
pessimist can aect your quality of life. Changing your thought process to something more posiDve can actually
have a posiDve eect on your enDre outlook. The research shows that people who tend to think more posiDvely
tend to get along be5er in the work place, are healthier, and feel be5er overall.
Trying to look for the posiDve in things can help you improve your situaDon. While this is not possible all the Dme,
it is possible to change your aCtude about your life and reap the rewards.
20
21
These are just ten of the wonderful benets of being more opDmisDc. There are many more a5ributes to taking a
more posiDve approach to the things that life throws your way. People who tend to see the good in things rather
than the bad are typically healthier as it improves both your psychological and physiological well-being.
When you are faced with adversity the way that you approach it is extremely important. Those who take a
negaDve approach tend to live in a world that is out to get them. These people oKen fail to see the bigger
picture, which can have a negaDve impact on their life.
Those who face adversity with a posiDve aCtude tend to have a happier life simply because they choose to see
the light at the end of the tunnel. When life throws something at them they look for the posiDves that can come
out of it and move on towards a future that looks much brighter.
The next Dme you have negaDve thoughts take a moment to think about how this negaDve experience could
actually be a good thing. This will benet your enDre well-being and help you experience a more fullling life.
22
23
Reframing Problems
When it comes to becoming more opDmisDc it is about learning to reframe problems as they arise. When you are
faced with an issue instead of blaming yourself, reframe it so that it is not all your fault. For example, if you are
alone at a party and thinking that you are boring and no one wants to talk to you, try thinking about where the
host of the party is and wondering why they have not introduced you to any of the guests. While this method of
looking for a scapegoat is not something a true opDmist would do, it will give you a dierent outlook on the
situaDon and can help you to nd other soluDons to the issue as you realize that you are not enDrely to blame.

HAPPINESS

Understanding Happiness
Just what is happiness? Many people have dierent views on this but the most commonly agreed upon deniDon
is: Happiness is a mental state of well being encompassing feelings like thankfulness, enjoyment and joy.
Living a meaningful life can make you happy as you use your knowledge and your Dme to leading your life with a
purpose.
Feeling happy for most people can be achieved by becoming part of a community. Humans have a strong desire to
belong somewhere. People become happy when they make an eort to do something. This can be learning a
new skill, helping someone or just doing anything that gives them pleasure.
Living a meaningful live is thought by many to be the path to happiness. But just how do you achieve this? One
way is to sit down and think about what you truly want to do with your life and then taking acDon to make this
happen.
How many Dmes have you wished or thought about how your life could be? You dont take acDon so your daily life
becomes a mundane rouDne. What is stopping you from changing your life?
28
One of the biggest reasons that people dont chase their dreams is because of fear. Fear of the unknown or of
what if is huge and is an enormous road block for many people.
While being happy has a lot to do with your own emoDonal feelings and well being. Your state of happiness can be
inuenced by outside factors. Mainly by those around you, have you ever noDced that if you are with a group of
people who are feeling dejected you start to feel the same way too?
Other people can easily reect their mood and feelings onto you and you take this mood on without even
realizing it. This is why it is important to surround yourself with well meaning people and people who are taking
posiDve acDon in their lives.
Many people assume that money will buy them happiness and while it will to some point money cant buy you
everything you need. Money cannot boost your well being or your feelings but doing good things with your
money can. Have you ever considered giving some money to charity? You may be surprised at how your act of
generosity will be received. This thankfulness can really explode that joyful feeling inside of you and make you
happy.
There are so many things which contribute to your happiness. Live your life in the best way you can, create you
bucket list and do each thing on it.
29
Whether you're happy, sad, angry, creaDve, stressed or something else enDrely, it all ulDmately comes down to
your neuroscience. The wiring and chemistry of our brains is what denes our every experience and our every
behavior and as such, the best way to unravel and understand any aspect of the human experience is to look
inwards towards the brain.
This is parDcularly useful if you're trying to improve your mood and be consistently happier. What is going on
inside the brain when you feel truly content and at peace. And what can you do to try and get your stubborn brain
to be like that more oKen?
Neurochemicals
UlDmately our mood comes down to chemistry specically it comes down to neurochemicals or
'neurotransmi5ers' which are produced in the brain in response to certain other acDviDes in the brain. When you
think of something or experience something that is happy, sad, scary or stressful, the brain responds in kind by
producing the relevant neurotransmi5er. These transmi5ers include serotonin, corDsol, norepinephrine,
dopamine, oxytocin, adenosine and many others.
30
When it comes to happiness, we want to increase the number of 'feel good' neurotransmi5ers which include
serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. These are chemicals that make us feel alert, happy, content and even loved.
On the other hand, we want to reduce ones like corDsol (which makes us stressed).
31
Self Happiness
You have no doubt heard about self help. There are thousands of books and arDcles on the topic of self help.
When it comes to being happy have you thought about how you get yourself into that state?
Happiness is a mental state which you feel as joy and contentment and just feeling happy. When was the last Dme
you can truly say you felt this emoDon? If it was a while ago have you considered self happiness?
Self happiness is simply the act of placing yourself in the right situaDon so you experience these emoDons. There
are several ways you can achieve this. One is by reading happiness quotes each and every day. Find ones that are
meaningful to you and repeat them out loud several Dmes a day. There are enDre websites with happiness quotes
on them. Search through some and copy down the ones which you like.
Your own acDons can bring you happiness as well and by doing or sharing something with others you can easily
experience this. It is well known that if you make someone else happy you will feel happy too. Why not try helping
someone with a task or chore. Do you have an elderly neighbor that needs help? Or is there a young mom in your
neighborhood who would appreciate some help with her kids? You could oer to watch them for a while or take
them to the park.
Many experts will tell you that all you need to be happy is a posiDve mind set, this may not always be true.
Another stream of thought is being conscious of the things you should not be doing. In other words you know

CONFIDENCE

You can have all the educaDon and the best experience in the world and lack the condence you need for ulDmate
success. Condence is a catalyst which can make a real dierence in the scope of your life and propel you to a
greatness you wouldnt have without it.
With condence, you can turn the impossible into the possible create success where others might give up.
While you can gain condence from educaDon and experience, the condence must come from inside and you
must project it in a way that others nd inspiring.
Condence provides the power you need to step into unknown situaDons unafraid and determined to succeed.
Leaving behind the secure and the known in your life may take incredible condence. Without it, you may become
stuck in a milk-toast type of life and never get out of a rut or a career thats going nowhere.
If you do lack condence, it may not be obvious to you unDl you get real with yourself. If you procrasDnate or feel
overwhelmed much of the Dme, it may be very dicult to turn the Ddes unless you do address your condence
issues. Its dicult for you to take acDon to get out of ruts and bad situaDons because you feel you cant do it right
or you need to learn more.
Condence can also help your decision-making skills. You may be hesitant to make decisions about even the
smallest of issues because you lack condence in your own abiliDes to succeed. You may become paralyzed with
indecision and become isolated and withdrawn. Second-guessing yourself only makes it worse.
SomeDmes you just need to behave as if youre condent and use that power to take acDon rather than simply
waiDng for something to happen to cement an idea or solve a problem. At least be condent in your

determinaDon to work on your goals. That determinaDon will spur you on to take the acDon(s) you need to
succeed.
Soon, condence can become a habit in your life a good habit that youll welcome and want to culDvate. That
ingrained habit will help you leave your comfort zone and take chances. Even if you fail, youll learn from the
mistakes you make and have the resolve to go on to try the next idea or level of success.
Condence provides the power you need to commit and work toward goals and know that your eorts are going
to succeed in the long run. Not only does that increase your chances of succeeding it also creates a sense of
saDsfacDon in your mind.
38
While you dont want to be too condent so as to seem arrogant, you do want to project the amount of
condence needed to succeed in life and reach the goals that youve set for yourself. Read and answer the
following quesDons (all yes or no) and then look back on your answers. You should have a pre5y good idea if your
condence quoDent is high or low or in the middle -- and what areas you need to work on to raise it.
Do you feel guilty when you say no? Saying no can be extremely traumaDc for you if you lack
condence in your decisions. You may nd yourself making up lies to get out of things rather than just
saying, no.
Do you compare yourself to others? Theres always going to be someone smarter, richer and be5er looking
than you. UnDl you become comfortable with yourself youll lack condence to go farther in life.
Do you feel inLmidated in most situaLons? Youre likely to feel inDmidated by others if you compare
yourself to others (see previous quesDon) and see yourself as inferior to them. Stop comparing yourself and
enjoy the moment.
Do you stand up for your values and beliefs? If you easily get swayed by others or dont speak up when
youre in an uncomfortable situaDon, you could lack condence. Compromising your belief system can be a
condence killer.
39
Do you try hard to impress others? When youre condent, you dont have to strive to impress others will
be automaDcally impressed by your presence. Condence exudes an image that means you dont have to
try to impress it will come naturally.
Are you nancially sound? Financial well-being can add to your condence quoDent. If you have problems
when it comes to planning a budget and spending money, you may need help from a professional nancial
planner to make you feel more condent in your nancial future.
Do you hesitate to take the iniLaLve on projects or ideas? Part of learning to become condent is the
ability to feel good about taking on challenges and new ideas. Its okay to take a back seat to someone who
knows more and whom you can learn from, but put yourself out there by taking iniDaDve at Dmes.
Do you feel condent about your future? Its important that you feel comfortable about the choices youre
making that will impact your future. That future encompasses your health, family and job decisions that
youre making now. Be sure theyre based on facts.
AKer youve assessed your condence quoDent and determined what you need to do to raise it, begin to take
acDon on those determinaDons. Later, when you feel youve made progress in the areas you needed to work on,
answer the quesDons again and see how far youve progressed.
40
Achieving success can make you a more condent person, but its dicult to reach the level of success you desire
without condence. Condence is the catalyst to overcoming doubts and fears and can help you through the
worst obstacles youll encounter on the road to success. Here are some sure-re Dps to help you get the
condence you need to climb the success ladder:
1. Be true to yourself. Your values and belief system must be rmly in place if you want to achieve a success
you can be proud of and to ensure you like yourself when you do reach the top of the ladder.
If you achieve success in ways which compromise who you truly are, you wont be able to enjoy your
achievements. It will be a success built on sand rather than solid ground and may crumble and fall with
Dme.
2. Trust in your abiliLes. You may have much to learn before you can succeed in a chosen eld or path. Think
of all that youve achieved so far and obstacles youve already overcome and trust that you can do more.
Dont dismiss what youve learned so far in life. You might think it was easy and that anyone could do it, but
others may see it as remarkable and look up to you for it.
3. Use your subconscious mind. RepeaDng posiDve armaDons and shooing negaDve thoughts away builds
strength for your subconscious mind a powerful ally in your quest for success.
41
Your subconscious mind, when trained to do your bidding can make a real dierence in how you and others
see yourself. It can also be a detriment if you let negaDve thoughts permeate and gain control making you
doubt your true abiliDes.
4. Use correct body language. Watch your posture, stance and control of your body language. It can be
powerful when dealing with others and expecDng a great outcome. SiCng up straight (as your mother used
to tell you) can send a far dierent and more posiDve message than slumping.
Study body language and begin to pracDce it. When you enter a room with your head held high and walking
like you own where you are and how you present yourself, people will take noDce in a posiDve way.
5. Pay afenLon to your personal look. When you present yourself as unkempt and looking wrinkled and
ungroomed, the image isnt one that reaps success.
If this is an area of your life where you lack skills, seek the help of others and develop a style youre
comfortable with and which ts the image you want to present.
42
43
POSITIVITY
44
45
46
Remember to smile.
Use your smile to project your posiDve aCtude. It is amazing how much of a dierence a smile makes. People can
actually tell you are smiling when talking to you on the phone, even though they can't see you smiling. Smiling
makes you and those around you feel more posiDve.
Do not quit no mafer what.
When you quit, you truly fail. What most people think of failure is really just a chance to learn. OKen, people quit
just before they reach their goal. This is something that successful people know and use all the Dme. They know
that as long as they do not quit, they will eventually achieve what they want.
Become more aware of your negaLve thoughts.
Learning to recognize when you are having a negaDve thought and turning it immediately into a posiDve one is
important. It can take Dme to develop a sense of when you are having negaDve thoughts, but it is a skill well
worth focusing on, so you can change them. Over Dme, you will nd it easier to recognize when you are having a
negaDve thought. Remember it takes Dme to change a habit, so be persistent.
Make Lme to do the things that make you happy.
When you take Dme to do things that make you happy, it can overow into the rest of your life. Even when life has
major challenges, you will nd you have more energy to tackle them, if you spend Dme doing things that make
you happy.

MeditaLon
MeditaDon is a great way to help eliminate negaDvity and turn it into posiDve thinking. It also reduces stress.
Because you get past the conscious level, you can really help reprogram your mindset with meditaDon. If you
combine this with the armaDons, you can increase the results.
Spend Lme with posiLve people
Try to eliminate or limit contact with people who tend to have a negaDve mindset. SomeDmes you can't
completely break o contact with them, especially if they are family or people you work with, but as much as
possible try to spend Dme with posiDve people. Not only will you nd it easier to be posiDve around them, but
you may learn new ways to help yourself be more posiDve.
You can eliminate negaDvity if you set your mind to it, and use tools and techniques to make it happen. You will
not only feel be5er about yourself and have more energy and zest for life, but you will be physically healthier.
NegaDve people drain their mental and physical well-being by their mindset. So learn to have a posiDve aCtude.
49
50
3. Smiling more can help, too, and is a simple way to help eliminate negaLvity.
Studies have shown that you can even sense when talking on the phone to someone that they are smiling. Smiling
is contagious and can not only help you feel more posiDve, but help those around you, as well.
4. Have you ever noLced that when you are in a good mood, and you talk with that one person who is always
negaLve, it brings your mood down?
Focus on people in your life who are posiDve. As much as possible, get rid of, or limit contact with negaDve
people. SomeDmes you can not completely do this, especially if they are family, but try to limit as much as you
can.
5. Playing the vicLm keeps you in a negaLve mindset.
By taking control of your life and your choices, you can eliminate a lot of the negaDvity. No ma5er how much it
seems everything is out of your control, you do have choices. Even if you have disabiliDes, or health condiDons,
you can nd ways to work around them to accomplish what you want to do.

INSPIRATION
53
54
Lost for inspiraDon? Here are ve techniques you can use to try and coax something new and exciDng out of your
brain! They wont always work, but give them a go, and you might just be surprised.
Go for a Walk
Walks are inspiring for a number of reasons. For starters, they allow us to take a break from what were doing and
to change our environment. In turn, this leads to new input that can help us to gain new perspecDve on whatever
problem or task were wrestling with.
At the same Dme, walking is a monotonous task that allows our default mode network to kick in. This, essenDally,
means that were daydreaming, which is, oKen, a source of great inspiraDon.
Ask the Right QuesLons
SomeDmes, inspiraDon is just about asking the right quesDons, which can help to reframe the problem youre
facing in order to look at it in a new way. For instance, if youre wondering how to solve a problem and you cant
come up with an answer, try asking yourself how Johnny would approach it. Likewise, instead of thinking about
what you want something to be, decide what you dont want it to be.
55
Take a Break
SomeDmes, the best thing you can do to spark some creaDvity or solve a problem is to take a break. This way, you
stop trying to force the idea, which simply creates stress, and instead, you simply let it come to you now that
youve entered all your input. This is why were oKen encouraged to sleep on big decisions.
Listen to Music
Music can be highly inspiring as it alters our mood and energy level and takes us to dierent places. OKen, youll
nd that music can leave you lost in thought, so try listening to some tracks while you mull over a subject, and see
if that helps.
Talk it Over
Theres a myth that ideas take the form of lightbulbs or lightning strikes and that they come in a ash, fully
formed. Actually, when quesDoned, most people admit that their best ideas formulated slowly, that they gestated
for days, months, or even years before emerging.
OKen, the best ideas are not formed in isolaDon either but rather when we discuss them with other people. Even
if were just thinking aloud, this can help us to see new perspecDves and will oKen result in new breakthroughs.
56
Looking to nd inspiraDon for the next great novel? For your musical masterpiece? For your next business idea?
OKen, the best way to nd it is just to go for a walk: an inspiraDon walk!
What is an InspiraLon Walk?
The idea behind an inspiraDon walk is to leave the connes of the home or oce to go for a stroll and, in doing
so, to discover the inspiraDon youre looking for.
So, why might this work? There are several reasons that inspiraDon oKen lies in the great outdoors. For starters,
walking is a mindless acDvity that has been shown to acDvate the brains default mode network. The default mode
network is a series of brain areas that kick into gear whenever were doing something that doesnt require a lot of
higher-order thinking (thinking with the prefrontal cortex).
This type of brain acDvity is implicated in daydreaming and oKen leads to the discovery of great ideas. In fact, its
thought that Einstein was in this brain state when he discovered his world-changing Special Theory of RelaDvity.
EecDvely, walking lets our mind wander, and this is what oKen leads to the best ideas.
RelaxaLon
57
Another key aspect of going for a walk is that it takes us outside and lets us explore our environment. This works
best when we walk in a natural seCng, which has been shown to trigger creaDvity all on its own.
EssenDally, when were relaxed, this also allows our mind to wander and explore dierent ideas and memories. In
turn, this leads to new creaDve breakthroughs and insights. This is the opposite of when were in a stressed and
focused state, which causes us to focus on just one thing at the expense of other, related ideas.
Being in scenic seCngs has been shown to trigger creaDvity because, to our primiDve brains, a lush environment

When you start on a new project, you can oKen nd yourself geCng stuck before you even manage to get started.
Its like a type of writers block, except it aects every kind of project from website designs to wedding planning
to interior design.
The problem is geCng that iniDal spark that will subsequently lead to all the other ideas coming through like an
avalanche. Its about going from nothing to something and pulling that something eecDvely out of thin air.
But designers and arDsts who do this sort of thing for a living need a way to reliably overcome this problem on a
consistent basis. One tool they use to this end is the moodboard. Lets take a look at what that is and how it can
help you.
What is a moodboard?
EssenDally, a moodboard is a type of collage. This means youll be taking dierent images and arranging them on a
single page. They can be cuCngs, or they can be snapshots taken from websites. The idea is to nd everything
thats related to the topic or thing youre trying to create.
So, if you were making a website for a tness company, you might create your collage using screenshots of other
tness company websites, imagery related to tness that could inspire a logo, inspiraDonal photos of people
working out, etc. Collect as many things that inspire you as possible, and from there, you should have a single

PRESSURE
62
63
There are numerous situaDons that cause pressure. We usually think of causes of pressure as being negaDve, such
as a rocky relaDonship or an exhausDng work schedule. However, anything which puts high demands on you or
forces you to adjust can cause pressure. This includes posiDve events such as purchasing a house, receiving a
promoDon, geCng married or going to college. Pressure can also be self-generated, for example when you have
pessimisDc thoughts about life. What cause pressure depends, at least in part, on your percepDon of it. Below are
some causes of pressure.
1. Money
Financial trouble is a common cause of pressure. Rent, not being able to make ends meet, or credit card debt can
put a serious amount of pressure on a person. In this society, where a lot of emphasis is on what youve and what
you can aord, nancial pressure is something that almost everyone can relate to.
2. RelaLonships
Arguments with a parent, child or a spouse can increase stress. When you live together, the pressure may feel
compounded. Issues among members of family or relaDves, even if you are not directly involved can cause
addiDonal pressure.
3. ProcrasLnaLon
Everybody procrasDnates for dierent reasons. However, in many causes, many of us despair because we feel
overwhelmed or scared of what we need to do. This can develop frustraDon and unnecessary pressure. Instead of

tackling a thought-provoking project in stages, people try doing the enDre project at once. We should be proud of
ourselves for every accomplishment we make, regardless of how li5le it is.
4. PercepLons and Altudes
How you view a parDcular situaDon or the world can determine whether it causes stress. For example, people
who think that they are doing a great job at work will have less pressure out by a huge upcoming project than
those who worry that theyre incompetent or incapable.
5. Uncertainty and Fear
Fear and uncertainty can hit closer to home , such being worried that you will not nish a project at work or won
t have enough money to pay your monthly bills. This makes you feel like you have no control over those events
and this can be a major cause of pressure.
6. CogniLve Dissonance
When theres a split between what we think and what we do, we do experience dissonance that is felt as
pressure. Dissonance also occurs when we fail to meet our obligaDons. Most of us believe we are commi5ed and
honest, but when situaDons prevent us from meeDng our obligaDons we are all faced with possibility of being
seen as incapable thus generaDng a lot of pressure.
65
It's easy enough to give the dicDonary deniDon of pressure. We know that it is a feeling of intense urgency
caused by an impending task. But what does that really mean? And how does pressure aect the way that we
work? Most importantly, how can we cope with pressure in order to keep from geCng stressed? The dicDonary
won't tell you any of that, but they're all keys to understanding pressure.
What is Pressure?
First and foremost, pressure is a psychological feeling. Just like anger and sadness, we feel pressure someDmes
when it's appropriate and other Dmes when it doesn't seem to be. Healthy amounts of pressure can help us to
work more eciently and eecDvely, moDvaDng us to do our very best. Unhealthy amounts of pressure, or
feelings of pressure at Dmes when it's not really there, can cause us to lock up nervously, siCng around and
procrasDnaDng unDl the very last minute. The chances are good that you've felt both types of pressure before.
What Does Pressure Do?
Pressure does dierent things to dierent people, it's a complicated feeling. For some people pressure raises their
heart rate, causes sweaDng and nervousness, and leads to stress. Stress intensies the feelings of pressure and
can cause a feedback loop that leaves us feeling u5erly worthless and unable to complete the task at hand.
AlternaDvely, pressure can be seen as a challenge. It can moDvate us to do our very best work. Pressure can be
seen as a challenge to rise above, or as an opportunity to deliver on a dicult assignment. Believe it or not, it's
largely up to you which kind of pressure you feel.
How Can I Cope With It?

The key to feeling pressure as a posiDve all lays in your coping skills. If you know how to handle pressure, that can
go a long way toward understanding pressure and rising above it. For some people, handling pressure is as simple
as doing a few deep breathing exercises. On the other end of the spectrum, some people with situaDonal anxiety
need therapy and occasionally medicaDon to handle pressure and stress. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle.
That means that it's possible to build coping skills to handle pressure. On this site, there is a list of dierent things
you can try, but the most important thing is to distract yourself when you're feeling stressed. Stress is negaDve
pressure that we place on ourselves when things seem hopeless. Strive to feel pressure as a posiDve factor, as a
challenge, and you'll not only understand pressure but you'll be able to rise above it.
67
When you have an insurmountable amount of pressure in your life, it can feel as if you are carrying a large burden
on your back that can really slow you down when it comes to achieving your goals.
Fortunately however, like most of the problems in life that we will come across, pressure is all in our minds. As
such, there are some things you can do to change your percepDon of the situaDon which will result in the release
of pressure from your life.
1) Don't Strive To Be A PerfecLonist
Many people agree that the whole concept of a5empDng to be a perfecDonist is pre5y pointless. By striving to
ensure that everything goes exactly the way you want it do, ulDmately you will be seCng yourself up for future
failure as well as to put unnecessarily pressure on yourself as well. This has a counterproducDve eect which will
essenDally reduce your ability to do an excellent job.
That isn't to say that you shouldn't strive to complete the job in a Dme ecient manner, however, you should be
aware of the fact that obstacles or shortcomings may manifest themselves. As such, as opposed to striving to be a
perfecDonist, understand that you may experience a few shortcomings here and there.
The most important thing to remember is that you shouldn't let them aect your performance.
2) Forget About What Others Think
Most of the pressure that you're experiencing may be due to the fact that you're overly concerned about the
opinions of others. But as a wise man once said, the trick isnt to avoid hurDng, the trick is to not mind that that it

hurts. The same thing can be said about the opinions or validaDon of others: the trick isn't to change the way they
think or to gain their validaDon, the trick is to not care about what they think. As far as pressure goes, the trick
isn't to see how you can prevent yourself from experience pressure, because you will, the trick is to not mind that
you're experiencing pressure and as such, you will release it.
3) Just Do It
One of the interesDng things about pressure is that it has a way of trapping us in a state of procrasDnaDon. We
may experience so much pressure, that we simply do not know where to begin. As such, we strive to focus on
other things or in essence, procrasDnate as opposed to focusing on the task at hand. However, by "just doing it", it
can help to stop overthinking as well as to get you out of a state of procrasDnaDon.

4. Ability to communicate. Ronald Reagan was known as The Great Communicator, and looking back at his
lifestyle, its easy to understand why. He was able to clearly explain and focus on what needed to be done
and express it in a way that was understood. If you have trouble communicaDng, read books or take a
course in achieving be5er communicaDon skills.
5. Ability to commit. George Pa5on, commanding general in World War II was a soldier who got up close and
personal to those under his command. He fought in the trenches and made it a point to be wherever his
men were experiencing diculty. As a leader, you must make a commitment to lead by example.
6. Maintain a sense of humor. The day to day business of being a leader can wear you down, but if you
maintain a sense of humor through the discouraging Dmes, your followers will maintain higher morale.
7. CreaLvity. A leader should have the ability to change from a path theyre on to another path by taking a
creaDve stance. SomeDmes, the decision involves how youre guiding others, but whatever the reason,
creaDvity helps everyone work toward the goal youre seeking.
You need to become a true leader of yourself if you want to accomplish great things or even meet small goals.
Leading your family through trials and tribulaDons is another reason to know how to lead. If your aspiraDon is to
become CEO of your own company, its vitally important that you know how to lead.
74
75
76
77
4. Resist change. Many leaders tend to do what theyve always done in terms of leading. One reason is that
theyre too overwhelmed with the complex tasks and responsibiliDes that leaders must take on. If you want
your business or team to prosper and grow, take some Dme to expose yourself to new ideas that will impact
your leadership ability in a posiDve way.
5. Hire people too fast to ll a slot. Hiring someone just to ll a void isnt a good way to build a team you can
count on. Youll invest Dme and eort in managing the new hire, but may eventually need to let him go if
you nd youve made a mistake in hiring. True leaders take their Dme when hiring and make sure they can
complete the work and grow along with the company or team.
Know whats expected of you in the leadership posiDon. You cant lead others if you dont know what youre
striving for, so be sure youre clear and focused on the vision rather than the small tasks of the job.

In relaDonships, momentum can work to establish commitment and sharing with others. RelaDonships are fragile
and must be nourished and nurtured consistently to bring about the results you want.
Work related momentum can guide you through the maze of climbing the corporate ladder or beginning a
business and making a success of it. No one wants to be stuck in a going-nowhere job, and you need to
recognize when momentum just isnt working and make a decision to move forward in another area or career.
Learn all you can about momentum and how the scienDc principle can be used in all areas of your life. Once the
wheels start turning, it will be dicult to stop you achieving what you set out to do.
83
84
CreaDng momentum at just the right Dmes in your life can propel you on to the success youve always dreamed of.
It can become an unstoppable force in your life and help you create some posiDve changes in your lifestyle.
Momentum can be used in virtually every part of your life. You can change bad habits into good ones, help put a
shaky relaDonship back on track and move forward in your career or business path to success.
A snowball can turn into an avalanche if it gathers enough force along the way and although an avalanche can
cause damage, the same force in your mental and physical acDons can propel you ahead to all good things.
The sheer force of the momentum you create will also mean that youll turn into a fast-moving machine. Youll
gain more condence just as a snowball gathers more snow and there wont be anything you cant achieve.
85
How dierent would your business look if you added the power of momentum every day? If you own your own
business, its especially important that you create and gather all the momentum you can to help set your
reputaDon as honest because you deal with others fairly and accurately.
You may not need momentum to simply hang up a shingle and call yourself a business-person, but if you want to
realize success and create a solid business, base momentum is essenDal.
Below are ve important acDons you can take to ensure your business success:
1. Understand your present situaLon. Youve got to honestly and accurately assess your present business
situaDon to get to the next level of business success. Take some Dme to evaluate your income, customers
and bills so that you have a good understanding of where you are now so you can focus on which things you
might improve upon.
2. Visualize your success. Where do you want your business to be a year from now how about ve years
from now? Research some challenges you might face when a5empDng to grow your business and address
how youre going to handle (minimize) them. Before momentum can help you become successful, you have
to visualize what the success looks like.
3. IniLate a plan. AKer you understand the background of your business, look to the future and create a plan
of acDon which will propel you ahead of where you are right now. You wouldnt think of beginning a

journey without looking at a map rst (or carrying your GPS) and you shouldnt think of expanding your
business without rst implemenDng a good plan.
4. Take acLon. Momentum will never take you o the ground oor if you dont take some decisive steps to
complete your goals and dreams of success. Your master plan should consist of large goals broken down
into small ones. CompleDng one small goal will create the momentum you need to go on to the next and
so on.
5. Never stop. No ma5er how discouraged you become, insert posiDve thoughts and acDons in place of the
negaDve ones and keep on the path with your momentum pushing you forward.
Rather than self-sabotaging your business success by limiDng yourself with fears and doubt, vow to become
determined in your quest for success and do what it takes to get where you want to be.

ASSERTIVENESS
89
90
An important part of life skills is the development of asserDveness. Without it, you could feel disrespected or
disregarded in relaDonships and career paths. AsserDveness is all about feeling condent in your ideas, thoughts
and beliefs that you can ask or demand what you want in a calm and eecDve manner.
AsserDveness is also about refusing to accept what you dont want. For example, if someone cuts in front of you
at the supermarket, do you call them on it or just keep quiet? If you dont speak up, you probably leave the store
feeling angry and frustrated.
If youre an aggressive personality, you may react to the same situaDon by becoming over-angry and shouDng at
the person who cut in line. That type of behavior is unacceptable and can cause serious conict.
You may have problems being asserDve with those in authority for example, parents, bosses or others who you
feel are above you. You may not have the condence to speak up around these people for fear that youll lose
your job or be looked at as confrontaDonal.
Ask yourself the following quesDons to gauge how asserDve you are:
Do you speak up when you disagree with someone?
Do you do whats right even though it goes against what others are doing?
Would you remind a person about money they borrowed and need to pay back?
Can you ask for help if needed?

Are you Dred of leCng others take advantage of you? It could happen at work or when someone cuts in front of
you at the supermarket. Youre irritated, but dont say anything and the anger and frustraDon builds to a boiling
point.
If youre passive that anger and frustraDon never escapes your body and may cause health problems. If youre
aggressive, the anger and frustraDon may end with you being abusive to a pet or loved one.
You can learn to become more asserDve, speak up for yourself and become more condent. But rst, you need
the asserDveness skills that will help you be surer of yourself and the acDons you want to take.
Become an Advocate for You!
The rst step in becoming more asserDve is to decide to become your own advocate. That means you have to
assert yourself in your job, with friends and family and others who may disrespect you.
Its someDmes scary to stand up for yourself especially when youre afraid of losing your job or a special
relaDonship. Even though it can someDmes be a challenge, having your own back will make you happier and help
you live life on your own terms.
There are three main ingredients to developing asserDveness skills and becoming your own advocate:
1. Know what you want.
2. Believe that its your right to have it.

If you have trouble taking up for yourself and saying no when needed, you may need to think about seCng
personal boundaries which will protect you from those who would take advantage of you.
SeCng personal boundaries is the top method you can use to improve your life. By standing up for yourself, youll
gain self-esteem and freedom from trying to please everyone.
You may have trouble in the beginning to assert yourself and set personal boundaries especially if youve been
passive in the past. If youve been aggressive, you may have handled boundaries with anger and lashing out.
Dealing with boundaries with passive or aggressive methods isnt good behavior.
Some of the issues you need to deal with before beginning to stand up for your personal boundaries include the
following:
1. Know your boundaries. Be clear with yourself about your beliefs and values what makes you feel
uncomfortable and how you now handle situaDons which compromise your boundaries.
2. Use clear and concise language. AKer you know your boundaries, assert yourself by using clear language
about how you feel when boundaries are being crossed.
3. Dont be a yes man. Part of seCng boundaries is knowing when to say no to people you work with and
in your personal sphere of family and friends. You lose your personal freedom when you take on too much.
95
4. Pay afenLon to your internal boundaries. If someone oends or disrespects you, ask yourself if what was
said is true. Your internal boundaries are lines drawn within yourself which prevent you from believing
everything someone says about you.
5. Know your rights. You shouldnt feel guilty about expressing yourself and asking for what you need in a
respecoul manner. You have every right to demand that youre treated fairly and with respect in all areas of
your life.
Begin seCng personal boundaries by using simple and direct statements in a non-threatening tone. You may feel
uncomfortable for a while, but youll soon feel a power that will make you stronger and more adept at drawing
lines at behaviors you will accept or not accept from others.
You dont need to debate the issues of your boundaries or explain yourself to others. Be rm and consistent in
repeaDng your requests or statements and reinforce your acDons by staying determined.
You may need to overcome guilt feelings when you begin to set personal boundaries. Remember that you should
rst consider yourself in any dealings and make yourself the priority rather than someone elses beliefs and
feelings.
96
The dierence between successful people and really successful people is that really successful people say no to
almost everything.

AsserDveness is your ability to act in harmony with your self-esteem without hurDng others.
