Round off a decimal
nearest to,
1 decimal place
2 decimal places
3 decimal places
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to Whole Number
Example 1:
3.3
To round 3.3 to whole number, we look at
the first digit after decimal point.
3.3
3.3
The first digit after decimal point is 3. 3 is less than 5,
so we round by down discarding the decimal and the
digit to the right of the decimal point.
3.3 is nearer to 3 than 4, so 3.3 3
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to Whole Number
Example 2: 5.8
To round 5.8 to whole number, we look at the first digit
after decimal point.
+1
5.8
5.8
The first digit after decimal point is 8. 8 is greater than 5, so
we round up the decimal by adding 1 to 5 and discarding the
decimal point and all digits to the right of the decimal point.
5.8 is nearer to 6 than 5, so 5.8 6
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 1 Decimal Place
Example 1: 9.329
To round 9.329 to 1 decimal place, we look at the second
digit after decimal point.
9.329
9.3
The second digit after decimal point is 2. 2 is
less than 5, so we round down the decimal by
discarding all the decimal places after number 2.
So, 9.329 9.3 ( 1 decimal place )
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 1 Decimal Place
Example 2: 6.476
To round 6.476 to 1 decimal place, we look at the second
digit after decimal point.
+1
6.476
9.476
9.576
9.5
The second digit after decimal point is 7. 7 is greater
than 5, so we round up the decimal by adding 1 to
number 4 and discarding all the decimal places after
number 7.
So, 6.476 6.5 ( 1 decimal place )
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 2 Decimal Places
Example 1: 23.574
To round 23.574 to 2 decimal places, we look at the third
digit after decimal point.
23.574
23.574
23.57
The third digit after decimal point is 4. 4 is
less than 5, so we round down the by
discarding the decimal place after number 7.
So, 23.574 23.57( 2 decimal places )
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 2 Decimal Places
Example 2: 15.889
To round 15.889 to 2 decimal places, we look at the third
digit after decimal point.
+1
15.889
15.889
15.896 15.89
The third digit after decimal point is 9. 9 is
greater than 5, so we round up the decimal by
adding 1 to 8 and discarding the decimal point
and all digits to the right of the decimal point.
So, 15.889 15.89 ( 2 decimal places)
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 3 Decimal Places
Example 1: 2.1983
To round 2.1983 to 3 decimal places, we look at the fourth
digit after decimal point.
2.1983
2.1983
2.198
The fourth digit after decimal point is 3. 3 is less
than 5, so we round down by discarding the
decimal place after number 8.
So, 2.1983 2.198( 3 decimal places )
Rounding Off Decimals Nearest to 3 Decimal Places
Example 2: 7.1239
To round 7.1239 to 3 decimal places, we look at the fourth
digit after decimal point.
+1
7.1239
7.1239
7.1249 7.124
The fourth digit after decimal point is 9. 9 is
greater than 5, so we round up the decimal by
