Elements of Culture

Culture consists of 7 elements that define a group's way of life: social organization into groups like families and classes; customs and traditions like rules of behavior; language for communication; arts and literature to teach values; religion with spiritual beliefs; forms of government that determine who holds power; and economic systems for managing resources. A culture's components include universals of uniform behavior, alternatives that allow individual choice, and specialties that develop from mastering chosen alternatives.

ELEMENTS OF CULTURE

CULTURE
Culture is everywhere.
The Way Of Life By A Group Of People.
It is a blueprint of how we live, think and act.

7 ELEMENTS:

A. Social Organization: Framework of the society.


-When a culture organizes its members into smaller groups.
Some smaller groups be in a culture:
Families- basic unit
Friends
Religious groups
Social classes
Occupation
Interest group

B. Customs and Traditions


- rules of behavior (written and unwritten).
-deals on how people expected to behave in social situations.

C. Language
-Important for communication and passing on traditions and
beliefs.

D. Arts and Literature


- teach about a cultures values.
- promote cultural pride and unity.
-Could include technology and entertainment.
Ex. Dance, music,theater, sculpture, ceramics, painting..etc

E. Religion
-are your spiritual beliefs on our origin, how should we live our
lives and where do we go when we die.
*3 Major Religions1.) Judaism- the 1st religion to believe in one God; Yahweh=GOD
-Holy Book called the Torah
2.) Christianity- derived from Judaism; founded by Jesus in 45 B.C.
-Holy book is called the Bible;
3.) Islamic- derived from Judaism;
-Allah is the name of their GOD.
-Holy book called the Quran or Koran; Founded in the city of Mecca by
Muhammad;

F. Forms of Government

Government- Who has the power.


*Levels of Government:
1.) Unitary System- National/Central Government has all the power
and they create the state or provincial govt & gives them limited powers;
(United Kingdom)
2.) Federal System- divides the powers of govt between the national
govt and the state/provincial govt; (United States)
Types of Government:
1. Democracy- the people have the power;
ex. U.S.= voting;
2. Dictatorship- one person has all the power, mainly taken by
force/military;
ex. North Korea
3. Autocracy- a single ruler has the power mainly passed down thru
inheritance rule from military power;
4. Monarchy- type of autocratic; a king or queen exercises supreme
control of the government; (Saudi Arabia)

G. Economic Systems
-the use of limited resources
Resources a community has Four types:
1. Traditional- people produce most of what they need to survive
2. Market- basic economic questions are answered by buying/selling
goods and services
3. Command- government controls answers to economic questions
4. Mixed- individuals make some economic decisions, the
government makes others.

COMPONENT/PARTS OF CULTURE
1. UNIVERSALS
-Are forms of behavior uniformly done by members of a society.
2. ALTERNATIVES
-Are forms of behavior that allow range of choice in the individuals a
member of choice.
3. SPECIALTIES
-Are the outgrowth of alternatives since once an individual chooses
a culture, he must master the skills which that alternative demands.
