THE COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
The compound-complex sentence combines elements of
compound and complex sentence. It is the most sophisticated
type of sentence you can use. Understanding how to construct
the compound-complex sentence will help you take your
writing to a new level of complexity.
A. UNDERSTANDING CLAUSES
A clause is comprised of at least one subject and one verb.
There are two types of clauses :
1. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE
An independent clause makes a statement or asks a
question that can act as a complete sentence.
Example :
The dog barks
My father is good man
My sister always read novel
Student normally spend four years in college
I hate you
2. DEPENDENT CLAUSE
A dependent clause cannot act as a complete sentence
because it begins with subordinating word, such as when,
because, before, etc.
Exampe :
When the dog barks
If I declare my major now
That the experiment was a success
Although students normally spend four year in
college
When they come to the united states
B. IDENTIFYING COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE
1. COMPOUND SENTENCE
A compound sentence is made up two independent clause
joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) and a
comma or by a semicolon alone.

2. COMPLEX SENTENCE
A complex sentence combines a dependent clause with an
independent clause. When the dependent clause is placed
before the independent clause, the two clauses are
divided by comma; otherwise; no punctuation is
necessary.

A compond complex sentence is a combination of two or
more independent clauses and one (or more) dependent
clauses. Many combination are possible, and their punctuation
requires careful attention.

Nayla forgot her friends brithday, so she sent
her a card when she finally remebered
