Scope:
This procedure covers the minimum requirements for materials, execution and method of record keeping for
Painting Work at site.

The Painting work shall comply to the relevant IS codes and speciication no. IOCL(PL) - CIVIL - SPEC of the
Contract Document No. PL/E&C/CONTR/CIVIL/SSPL/ML/2002-03/20 (Volume II)

Materials
Lime shall be conforming to IS 712 and Indigo, gum, pigments etc. shall be of good quality.

Oil bound distemper shall be conforming to IS 427 & IS 428 and of approved shade, brand and manufactures.
Primer for Oil bound distemper shall be of the same manufactures.
Water proof cement paint shall be conforming to IS 5410 and of approved shade manufactured by 'Snowcem'
or equivalent brand.
Synthetic enamel paint shall be conforming to IS 106 and of approved shade & manufacturer.

Procedure

White Washing / Colour Washing
4.2
Surface area shall be thoroughly brushed to remove the mortar dropping and foreign matters before applying
the wash. The wash shall be prepared from fresh stone shale lime. The lime shall be thoroughly soaked and
screened through a clean coarse cloth and admixed with gum and indigo. In each one kg. of lime 3 gm. of
indigo and 20 gm. of gum shall be mixed. One kg of lime will produce 5 litres of white milky solution. The
wash solution shall be applied with brush on the surface ready for painting. Each coat shall be allowed to dry
before application of next coat. Total three coats shall be applied. For colour wash, pigment of desired shade
shall be added in the solution to get the desired shade.

The surface shall be thoroughly cleaned of dust, mortar dropping, foreign matters etc. If any old white or
colour wash is present, the same shall be removed by washing and scrubbing and then be allowed to dry for
at least 48 hours. It shall then be sand papered to remove any unevenness. The depressions shall be made
up with plaster of paris putty.
The primer of the approved make shall be applied first horizontally and then vertically immediately afterwards.
The surface shall be finished as uniformly as possible leaving no brush marks. It shall be allowed to dry for at
least 48 hours before oil bound distemper is applied. The surface thus prepared shall be lightly sand papered
to make it smooth for receiving distemper, taking care not to rub out the primer coat. One coat of distemper
properly diluted with thinner as per the manufacturer's recommendation shall be applied with brush in
horizontal strokes followed immediately by vertical ones which together constitute one coat. The subsequent
coat shall be applied in the same way so as to obtain an even surface. A time interval of at least 24 hours
shall be allowed between consecutive coats to permit proper drying of the preceding coat.

Water proof Cement Paint
The surface shall be thoroughly cleaned of dust, mortar dropping, foreign matters etc.by scrubbing and
washing.
The surface shall be thoroughly wetted with clean water before the water proof cement paint is applied. Water
proof cement paint shall be mixed in clean water as per the manufacturer recommendation to get a
homogenious liquid paint. Liquid paint shall be prepared in such a quantity that it can be consumed within
one hour of its mixing. Paint shall be applied with brush in horizontal strokes followed immediately by vertical
ones which together constitute one coat. A time interval of at least 24 hours shall be allowed between
consecutive coats to permit proper drying of the preceding coat. Total three coats of paint shall be applied.
Painting shall be done with proper care so as to avoid any brush mark on the finished surface. After the
painting is over curing with water shall be done at least for three days.
