Preface and Acknowledgements


The papers published in the this special issue of
Fisheries Research were presented at the First International Symposium on Pacic Squids during the VIII
Congreso Latinamericano de Ciencias del Mar held in
Trujillo, Peru, in October 1999.
We thank the convenors of the Congreso for hosting
this Symposium, Almirante Luis A. Giampietri R.,
President of the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE),
for his enthusiastic support of the Symposium, the EU
VECEP Programme for enabling Prof. Paul Rodhouse
to visit Peru in 1997 and 1998, Nigel Peacock and Jane
Cameron at Landell Mills Ltd., Management Consultants for organising the visits, Dr. Isobel Tsukayama
and John Tilman in Lima for their assistance in Peru
and the British Antarctic Survey for the support given

to Prof. Paul Rodhouse during the ongoing collaboration with IMARPE.
