Cast:
Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma as Pi, age 16 / Irrfan Khan as Pi, adult)
Piscine Molitor Patel, known to all as just "Pi", is the narrator and protagonist of the novel. He
was named after a swimming pool in Paris, despite the fact that neither his mother nor his
father particularly liked swimming. The story is told as a narrative from the perspective of a
middle-aged Pi, now married with his own family, and living in Canada. At the time of main
events of the story, he is sixteen years old. He recounts the story of his life and his 227-day
journey on a lifeboat when his ship sinks in the middle of the Pacific Ocean during a voyage
to North America.
Santosh Patel (Adil Hussain)
Pi's father, Santosh, carries the banner of the New India. This means he stands for progress
and not religion. He cares about the business of the zoo and worries about losing Pi to
religious fanaticism.
Gita Patel (Tabu)
Pi's mother is named Gita, but she's mostly just referred to as "Mother." She's an incredibly
warm presence for Pi. She's sympathetic when his father tries to teach him a lesson about
the danger of animals with the zoo's tiger.
Ravi Patel (Mohamed Khaleeli as Ravi, age 13/Vibish Sivakumar as Ravi, age 18)
Pi feels intense guilt about Ravi. When Pi leaves to investigate the explosion on the ship, he
shakes Ravi but decides to let him sleep, big mistake. Ravi goes down with the ship.
Yann Martel (Rafe Spall)
A novelist who meets Pi Patel, whom he has been told has a life storied that would be a good
subject for a book. Trivia: The original author of the book Life of Pi is Yann Martel.
Richard Parker (The Bengal tiger)
Pis companion throughout his ordeal at sea is Richard Parker, a 450-pound Royal Bengal
tiger. Though Richard Parker is quite fearsome, ironically his presence helps Pi stay alive.
Trivia: Originally, a hunter named Richard Parker baptized the tiger with the name "Thirsty"
(creative, right?). But in a paperwork mix-up, the tiger ends up with the name Richard Parker
and the hunter with the name Thirsty.
