FACS COURSES
CLINICAL NUTRITION (Semester)
FACS MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of Family and
Consumer Science education at
Grand Island Northwest High
School is to assure quality
educational programs that provide
all students with the opportunities
to enhance their practical
knowledge for life while focusing
on families, relationships, and
communication in becoming
productive members of society.
Prerequisite - A strong science background is
helpful.
This course introduces students to the
science of human nutrition and the
relationship between nutrition and health
throughout the life cycle. It includes
information about food/nutrition for health
promotion.
Grades: 11, 12
CULINARY SKILLS 1 (previously
NUTRITION & FOOD) (Semester)
Students will apply food safety, food
sanitation principles, and preparation
techniques and integrate nutritional
knowledge when planning and preparing food
products. It will provide training in the
workplace and culinary skills, and
interpersonal and communication skills, as well
as an exposure to the areas of restaurant
management and career exploration.
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT
(Semester)
This course provides students with an
understanding of human development in the
areas of physical, social, emotional and
intellectual development from infancy
through the entire lifespan. Students will
learn how to develop positive interactions
with others and how development can be
guided at each age.
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12
CULINARY SKILLS 2 (previously
NUTRITION & FOOD II) (Semester)
Prerequisite: Students will have passed
Culinary Skills 1 (a.k.a. Nutrition and Food)
with a C or higher.
Students interested in a pursuing a career in
Restaurant/Hospitality will find this a
valuable course. Students will expand their
food preparation skills and techniques.
Students will be completing an in-depth study
of food and food preparation techniques.
