The Declaration of Independence formally declared the separation of the original 13 British colonies from the United Kingdom. It was written in 1776 and had four main parts: the Preamble outlined the reasons for separation, the Declaration of Natural Rights asserted fundamental human rights, the List of Grievances detailed 27 abuses by King George III, and the Resolution of Independence officially declared the colonies free and independent states.
