Descript ion - A m ixt ure of an im age of a boy

Process - I needed t o use layer m asks, and


even duplicat e t he layer wit h t he boy t o keep
him opaque enough while not having any of
t he light s becom e dist ract ing from t he
background. I used gradient s t o achieve t he
sm oot h blend of spot s of light from one im age
t o t he ot her. I sam pled t he colors from t he
t op im age t o form t he t ext , and m ade it soft er
and m ore t ransparent t o bet t er fit t he im age.

Descript ion - An inform at ional brochure for
t he fict ional Akron Zoo, let t ing it s readers
know about t he zoo's at t ract ions and pricing.

Object ives - Creat e a t wo-sided, folding


docum ent wit h at least 4 high qualit y im ages.
Include headers and at least 250 words of
body copy in at least 3 paragraphs.

Process - I st art ed by designing a logo for t he


zoo by overlapping t he let t ers A and Z. I liked
t he com binat ion of t he green and blue, so I
incorporat ed t hose colors int o t he layout of
t he brochure. I st art ed by placing t he im ages,
and t hen used t ext t o fill in t he ot her areas
around t hem . I m ade sure t o bleed t he im ages
as well as t he t it le bars, while st ill using m y
whit e space effect ively.

Object ives - Use your own logo t o design a


business card layout . Include cont act info wit h

Process - I st art ed out by renovat ing m y logo,


adding an "S" and giving a whit e out line t o it
as well as t he eyes, and I decided t hat I
want ed a dark gradient for m y business card.
Whit e seem ed t o be t he best choice of font
color for readabilit y on t he dark background,
as well as t o m at ch t he out lines of t he logo. I
kept t he sam e color schem e wit h t he
let t erhead, em ploying whit e, black, and deep
red. I used a line t o separat e t he header from
t he rest of t he paper, as well as break up t he
large chunk of personal info.

Object ives - Choose a color schem e, t ake a


phot o t o m at ch t hose colors, t hen incorporat e
t he colors int o t he layout .Use a digit al cam era
t o t ake a qualit y im age, t hen download it .

Process - I t ook out all t he color except for t he


red. I want ed t o align m y body along t he vert ical
line of t he right t hird of t he phot o. Brot her
Judkins point ed out how t hat choice pushed m y
hand and foot t oo close t o t he edge of t he
im age. He also suggest ed t hat I swit ch from a
m odern t ypeface, which I used purely for
readabilit y, t o a sans serif, t o give t he im age a
younger, m ore m odern feel. I blurred out som e
leaves in t he foreground because t hey were
dist ract ing, but left t he ones furt her back alone
t o give t he ground som e sense of norm alit y. I
used t he board as t he source for m y alignm ent s,
given t hat it was t he focal point of t he im age.

Object ives - Find, scan and im port

high-qualit y im age. Creat e a full-bleed design.
Choose a color schem e and t ypeface(s) t hat
work for your m essage and audience.

Process - The whole flier was designed using


Microsoft Word. The im age was scanned in
from a m agazine, and I sam pled colors from
t he baked good t o m ake t he t ransparent t ext
boxes and t ext . I lined t he im age up off t o t he
side t o fit all t he inform at ion int o t he lower
corner of t he flier. I colored t he boxes and t he
t ext like I did t o give t hem cont rast while st ill
fit t ing in t he color schem e of t he im age. I
brought t he boxes right up t o t he diagonal
edge of t he baked good while leaving space
bet ween t hem t o unify t he inform at ion.

previous designs. Use only Illust rat or t ools t o
design and creat e your logo.

Process - I had t o find t he right shape for t he


ghost . I didn't want som et hing t oo generic or
boring. I want ed som et hing wit h a lit t le bit of
act ion going on, while st ill looking like a ghost .
I found a good out line in a google im age
search, roughly t raced it , and t hen sm oot hed
it out using t he pen t ool for t he out line. I used
t he pen t ool for t he board as well, and t he
ellipse t ool for t he wheels and eyes.

Object ives - Creat e a flier for an event . Apply


t he design principles and use appropriat e
t ypography. Incorporat e basic InDesign skills
t o im prove basic flier layout .

Process - In designing t his project , an


int erest ing t it le and im age seem ed like keys t o
capt uring at t ent ion, so I decided t o m ake
t hose t he m ain focus of t he flier. I want ed t o
send a m essage t hat t his conference would be
a fun environm ent for st udent s t o learn new
skills and knowledge while also m eet ing ot her
st udent s sim ilar t o t hem . I sket ched out a few
designs and I really liked t he im balanced t it le
in t he black header. I felt t hat it would give
m e a way t o line up different colum ns inside
t he flier. I separat ed t he dat e and place
slight ly t o m ake t hem easier t o find.
