Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days are putting the finishing touches on another outstanding
four days of entertainment and excitement featuring professional rodeo, chuckwagon races, Running
With the Bulls and, of course, various music acts
from July 29 to Aug. 1.
Once again Strathmore is a stop on the Wrangler
Canadian Professional Rodeo Tour, drawing some
of the top professional cowboys and cowgirls from
across Canada and the United States for four performances. As well, the 36 drivers and outfits of the
World Professional Chuckwagon Association will be
here for four days of racing.
Part of the appeal of the Strathmore Stampede
is its professional rodeo and chuckwagon racing,
but its more affordable than the Calgary Stampede
and people can be closer to the action, said Herb
McLane, general manager of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society, which organizes the event.
The SPR Running of the Bulls is set for 6 p.m.
on the Saturday and Sunday before the chuckwagon
races. Each night, up to 80 contestants will have the
opportunity to run with the bulls for a $1,000 cash
prize.
The running of the bulls is popular with both
contestants and fans. While it has an element of danger, our objective is the safety of both the contestants
and the bulls, said McLane.
On the Heritage Days side of things, this year has
gone to the dogs more specifically, three daily
shows by SuperDogs from Friday to Sunday, and
Running with the Dachshunds on Monday.
There will also be light horse events such as gymkhana, and heavy horse pulls in the Heritage Arena
from Saturday to Monday.
Friday nights classic rock concert features one of
Canadas best-known groups, Prism. As well, on Sunday night the Strathmore Musical Arts Society presents a concert by Longhaul and the Levesque Family.
Cobbs Carnival will be there for the whole event
with games and rides for children and young adults.
For those needing a break from all the action, the
Wine Cellar, sponsored by Co-op Wine and Spirits,
Eagle Lake Nurseries and Eagle Lake Landscape, will
be open.
We hope people will see the Stampede and Heritage Days as a chance to holiday at home, take the
family out and have a good time at a good value,
said McLane.

The Strathmore Municipal Library is
partnering with a talented 10-year-old in
a program called Act the Week, which will
run from Aug. 8-12 for children in the community.
Charlie Ziehr is a Westmount School student, and the mastermind behind the program. She has written a script The Never
Ending Story for use in the program, and
will be one of the acting coaches guiding
the participants through the week.
I just like to plan things, said Ziehr. I
have lots of ideas. I wanted to do a craft
camp, but then I just felt one day that I
needed to do something else, so I came up
with Act the Week.
The program will run each day, and at
the end of the week, participants will put
on a play.
Ziehr recently attended an acting camp
in Rockyford and learned a lot of skills that
she will pass down to participants. This includes having participants brainstorm to
come up with their own script. She will
also stick to the fundamentals, teaching
things like enunciation, expressions, tableaus and skits.
The program is for children aged 7-10,
and will run from 4:30-6:45 p.m. from Aug.
8-12. Registration is $10 and the final show
will be at 7 p.m. on August 12.

Stampede queen

ANDREA ROBERTS

With the Strathmore Stampede getting ever closer, the
three contestants in the Strathmore Stampede queen competition will be preparing to show that they have what it takes
to be the next queen.
On July 30, reigning Queen Shayla Gerencer will pass on
her crown.
Our reigning queen Shayla Gerencer has been unbelievable, said Judi Wilson, who is head of the queen committee.
And the girl who takes over has really big boots to fill because Shayla set the bar pretty high.
The three contestants are Shelby Stout, Cayley Peltzer and
Lindsey Newman. They will be attending the Rockyford Rodeo July 22-24, and once that is over the real work begins.
During the week of July 25-29, the contestants will un-

dergo a number of different tests to ensure they are the best
person for the job. Wilson said this year will be harder than
the last as all three contestants are very good, sharing similar
poise, dress sense and horsemanship skill.
The past year has been a learning experience for the queen
committee, as it was the first time since 2000 that Strathmore
had a queen. Committee members learned a lot of what not
to do as well as how to make sure the reign of the queen
runs smoothly.
Gerencer was instrumental in bringing to the committees
attention certain things they should be doing. They have also
improved the judging system for the new queen and have
decided to do away with the percentages, instead using a
total point system.
The girls will have a total of nine judges they have to impress, in such tests as a written exam, horsemanship and the
fashion show.

Recently Breitweiser updated town

park will be borne by the Lions Club.
They received positive feedback from
the councillors who thanked the club
for their efforts.
The park will also serve as the
Strathmore Lions Clubs Legacy Project. Internationally, Lions Clubs are
encouraged to create a project in celebration of the Clubs 100th anniversary
in 2017.
The first phase will include a memorial forest on the east side of the

The Strathmore Lions Club will soon
start development of the Lions Park,
which will be situated in the green
space between the Western Irrigation

Estates.
The development had been in talks
for a while, with an agreement finally
struck between the WID, the Town of
Strathmore, the Strathmore Lions Club
and the Strathmore Assembly of Youth
(SAY).
The development of the park will
take place in phases, and the Lions

more paving to connect to the existing
pathways. There will be two pathways
added; the first will be 55 metres long
on the west side of the park while the
second will be 285 metres on the east
side of the park.
The Lions Club would also like to
add three picnic tables to the area, and
a few benches around the memorial
forest.
There are Strathmore Disc Golf
Course baskets in the area but the park
will not affect play as SAY had been in
talks with the Lions Club when they
planned the course.
The Lions Club has also ensured
that the residents who are in the area
are well informed of the plans for the
park, and Breitweiser said so far they
have had positive feedback about the
developments.

The rate of growth in the numbers of people over
65 is increasing. Today, worldwide, about 8.5%
(617 million) people are in this age group. By the
year, 2050, nearly 17% (1.6 billion) people will be
over 65. The problems arise from the fact that those
living longer are not necessarily living healthier.
So the cost pressures on our health system will
increase in the future.
New Canadian guidelines on hypertension were
released this year. The new guidelines included
increased potassium intake through diet (fresh
fruits, vegetables and legumes). In patients over
50, with a systolic (upper number) blood pressure
of over 130 should get the blood pressure down
to 120. Blood pressures taken by an automated
method is preferred to one done by the doctor or
nurse. Have you checked your blood pressure
lately?
There are now three states in the U.S. where
women and adolescents can obtain birth control
at their local pharmacy without a prescription.
California joined Oregon and Washington state
in this endeavour. This was applauded by many
who feel this is a step forward for womens health.
Opponents say this will increase sexual activity
among a vulnerable age group. So far, this idea has
not taken hold in Canada.
Use of tobacco among teens has remained stable
for the past 5 years. However the use of e-cigarettes
is increasing in this age group.

By the time I get to Phoenix Three
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So for the third straight summer, Deb and I
left the cold and rainy 15 degrees of Strathmore for
the 45 degrees of scorching and unrelenting sun of
Phoenix.
If youve been a reader of this column for a while,
then you know we go there each summer. Most of
the people in Phoenix ask us the same question
youre thinking now WHY?
If you havent been to Arizona in the summer, then
you havent intentionally sat in an oven, either! I
cant quite describe the heat, its like a blanket that
wraps around you, tightens, and you cant escape. At
first I thought I was over reacting, when I was hit by
that wall of heat, but oh no! In fact, I overheard one
local talk about the temperature this way (if youre
eating, you may want to stop). As we were going into
Albertsons for groceries and cold refreshing beverages, the guy said that that he could feel the crotch
soup starting! Now, that is a horrible thought and
image none of us can shake again (sorry if your hot
soup just came up)!
I actually wonder how weather men (persons) can
take their pay cheque with no guilt. I mean, its got
to be the easiest job in the world.
Lets go to you Bob, in weather.
Thanks Stan, its going to be sunny and freaking
hot for the 33rd day in a row. In fact, I dont think it
will ever not be sunny and hot!
Deb and I saw one cloud once, and it was a big
event! However, we did keep track of the wet storms
Strathmore got! Actually, Arizona refers to July as
monsoon season, where dust storms are often followed by rain. There was a dust storm once but
never any moisture!
Even before we left Canada, I knew I was in trouble. Last year, I burned so badly (except for the shaded area under my man boobs), that I had to wear a
t-shirt for most of the holiday there.
This year, I vowed I would not burn, and Id be sensible in my activities, and what I wore. Since April, I
have been struggling with pain in my feet. So, as we
raced around packing and leaving the house, I didnt
really clue in to the pain I just thought same old,
same old.
That is, until we were in the security line and my
left foot started to ache. Now Debbie has always
warned me not to joke around in airports, something
about missing flights, pat downs, cavity searches,
getting tazed whatever.
So, she was not very pleased as I burst out laughing just before we put all our valuables in the bins.
Looking down, I saw that I was wearing two different runners! How was I going to hide this? They
were totally different!!
Now, I was raised Catholic, so my first instinct is
to always tell the truth, so I confessed! Deb began
laughing, too. Then my daughter and her boyfriend
joined in! I spent the rest of the time hiding my runners behind luggage, and one of our first stops was
a shoe store!
If youve never driven in Phoenix, picture Deerfoot
Trail on steroids. Yes, its the roadway that should
have been tested, at least in an Olympic year! In
some parts of Phoenix, there are six, count em, six
lanes of drivers who follow no speed limit signs!
Even their carpool lane is temporary. For a few hours
a day, its for three or more people. The other times
of the day, it becomes the rocket lane where speed
limits do not apply, and you can gracefully soar at
amazing speeds.
Signaling, thats for Canadian tourists! On one of
Debbies many shopping excursions, I sat and chatted with an older Arizona husband. He said the locals actually dread when the Canadian snowbirds
come back in October, because it adds thousands of
cars to the roads!
He said that parking, emissions, and traffic all go
crazy. I wanted to say that it also adds thousands of
courteous drivers to the city, but as a Canadian, I was
too polite!

Library

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
The Strathmore Municipal Library recently welcomed Alexis McKenzie as the
new interim director of the library.
McKenzie takes the reins from Rachel
Dick Hughes, who is on maternity leave.
I am in love with Strathmore, said
McKenzie. The feeling is very similar to
where I grew up. It is very communityminded with a lot of people participating. I am really excited to be a part of it.
McKenzie started her new position on
July 4 and, despite only having worked a
few weeks, she was already thankful to
have been given the opportunity to work
in her dream job.
McKenzie grew up in a small town
outside of Abbotsford, B.C. and said
Strathmore gives her the same kind of
community feeling she grew up with.
After studying at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she obtained
her English Literature degree, she went
to McGill University to obtain a Library
Science Degree in 2012. Working for a
library was an easy decision for McKenzie as she has always loved reading and
helping people.
A good part of why I love libraries so
much is sometimes I miss school, she
said. I loved school and learning all the
time. Libraries are the perfect place to
continue that life-long learning process.
McKenzie has worked in a number of
different libraries, sharing her expertise
Cozy cardigans beat the record with 29
The Strathmore Library held their Cardigan Record Day on July 14 where they were trying to beat the

of Library programming for the summer said, We need 13 to beat the record but are really hoping for
50. Despite the sudden flash summer storm they (Strathmore Library) broke the record with 29 participants. Carly Davidson, the other summer coordinator for this year said they will be holding one more
record breaking event later this summer on Aug. 19 at 5:30 pm aiming to break the biggest pyjama
party held in a Library with popcorn and a movie.

by El Fedewich
By Frank Bucholtz
El Fedewich has been a fixture in the Cloverdale, B.C.
business community for decades. Now hes written a
book about his life.
Living in a Glass House, and Being Raised by a Small
Town, is a well-illustrated and well-edited memoir.
Many people have good stories to tell about their lives,
but sometimes their stories dont read as well in print.
This book is much better than most. It has been professionally written and edited, and thus has a clear theme
one which ties together two very different towns,
Cloverdale and Strathmore, Alberta.
Fedewich grew up in Strathmore, and due to the death
of his father when he was 10, was raised primarily
by his hard-working mother, and by extension, by the
whole town including his teachers, town business
people, the local police and many others.
He tells a lot of stories about growing up in Strathmore.
One involves his fathers death, likely from a gastrointestinal infection that would probably be easily treated
today. After his death, his hospital bills had climbed to
$2,000 an enormous sum in 1946. It took his wife (with
help from teenaged El) nine years to pay the bill off.
After his fathers death, his mother took over the family
business, which sold dry goods. El and his sister Olga
helped out, but he soon was also working at other jobs,
and was well-known all over town. His teachers were
important role models, as were local business people
and policemen.
One time, local Mountie Keith Sargent gave 14-yearold El a tough lesson, for letting his mother carry water
from a well across the street to her home. He saw her
carrying two pails of water and called out Bessie, put
that water down. He then came into the house and
hauled young El out by the ear, proceeding to tell him
he was big and strong enough that he should be carrying the water.
With my dad gone, my teachers and other self-appointed guardians who took up the slack became the
key influences in my life, pushing me to work harder
at school, encouraging me to seek out potential leadership roles in cadets and urging me to better myself.
I was still afforded a great deal of freedom to fool
around, experiment and make mistakes, he writes.
Another compelling story has him working as the tow
truck driver for Risdon Motors. He had lost his drivers
licence for speeding through an alley, but Mountie
Sargent called him shortly afterwards and told him to
get out to an accident on the highway.
I havent got a licence. You took it last week, remember? he told the policeman.
Ill give it back to you as soon as you get here, Sargent said.
He tells many other stories about colourful townspeople, working on neighbouring farms and working in the
burgeoning oil industry.
He moved to B.C. as a young man, and after a time
back in Strathmore, came back for good. For many
years, he worked in the finance business. He first
came to Surrey in 1968, when he and his wife Noreen
purchased a five and one-half acre parcel of land and
an older house, planning to raise their three girls in a
country atmosphere.
That eventually led to his friend Earl Stewart inviting
him to open a mortgage business, which later inspired
Fedewich to enter the notary business.
In those days, an aspiring notary had to buy a seal from
another notary, and then take an intensive training
course before starting in business. He found out that
Frank McKinnon, a longtime notary in Cloverdale, was
planning to retire.
Cloverdale! That would be perfect. It reminded me
of the small prairie town Id grown up in. It had a
well-developed business centre, an agricultural focus,
a clearly-defined catchment area. Once I heard that
Frank McKinnon was retiring, all I wanted was Cloverdale, he writes.
His start as a notary in Cloverdale in 1978 was a bit challenging, as it must have been for many notaries who had
Living in
a Glass
House,
and
to
set up their businesses in what seemed to be a backwards approach getting a seal, then taking two years of training, before finally starting in business.
I worked hard to find clients, calling on people, buying them lunches, getting to know the community and,
more important, getting known. I was out of the office
85 per cent of the time as I pulled out all the stops to
increase business.
His business eventually succeeded, due to his hard
work and the many connections that he made through
business and community work. He became secretary-treasurer of the Surrey Dyking District, and became part of many Cloverdale business and community organizations.
In many ways, he was going back to his Strathmore
roots.
He became deeply involved in the provincial notary
organization, serving on the board and helping set up
training programs. He also attended many international gathering of notaries in disparate places such
as Amsterdam, Cartagena, Colombia, and Marrakech,
Morocco.
Eventually, his youngest daughter Trish decided she
would like to become a notary public as well. She articled with her father, and soon after completing all her
training took over the business, which she now operates
with her husband Norman Witt. Her father continued
to help out with the business, but took more time away
so that he and his wife Noreen could spend more time

Town
travelling
and with their
growing number of
grandchildren.
One of their most interesting trips was to Ukraine, the
area where both of El Fedewichs parents were born.
He had a chance to meet his fathers sister, many
cousins and even sponsored a trip to Canada by one
of his cousins and his family.
His parents had both come to Canada in the 1920s.
They had come from villages that were only three kilometres apart. They were married in 1929 in Calgary.
They lived in Rockyford before moving to Strathmore
when El was five.
There are many good stories in the book, about teenage pranks, sobering reality on the side of a highway
as a tow truck operator, learning how to collect money
from people and the attempted castration of a young
bull.
You can purchase your books at The Strathmore Times
office for $79, GST included.
Frank Bucholtz is the retired editor of The Langley
Times in B.C.s Fraser Valley, and has known El Fedewich for the past 30 years.

Rosebud is
blooming
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor
Thanks to grants from Wheatland
County and to committed volunteers,
the Hamlet of Rosebud is in bloom all
summer.
When Rosebud resident Charlotte Riegel and her husband Stan moved to the
hamlet in 2012, she looked around and
said, where are all the flowers?
Rosebud School of the Arts has some
attractive and well-tended flowers, she
said, but she felt more of the hamlets
public spaces needed flowers.
So in 2013, through the Rosebud Community Enhancement Society (RCES),
she applied to Wheatland County for
a grant. She used the grant funding to
order self-watering planters and purchase flowers.
Then Riegel and fellow Rosebud residents Helen Zachariassen and Sue
Miller arranged flowers in 19 planters
in various sizes, and displayed them
at key points around the village the
east and north entrances to town, the
Akokiniskway Gallery, the fire hall, the
community hall, the BMO Studio Stage,
along 1st Street and at the corners of
the four-way stop.
This year, Riegel, Zachariassen and
Miller welcomed more volunteers to
the flower-planting team. Val Speer,
Travis Friesen, Mert Martin, Lauren
Hamm and her young daughter Bria
joined them in assembling and caring
for the flowers. John Miller keeps the
planters watered.
They practice companion planting, Riegel said. For instance, they plant alyssum, mint and chives, both for their
beauty, and to deter deer from eating
the plants. As an added benefit, the
mint and chives can be harvested.
From what Riegel is hearing, their efforts are having the impact they were
looking for.
People are always commenting about
how much the flowers brighten the
community, and how much they love
them, she said. People have stopped
me and commented how it cheers them
up when they drive into town and see
the beautiful flowers.
She received further affirmation from

an unexpected source, when a farming specialist from
South Africa visited Rosebud.
[He] commented that the tremendous variety of flowers
that we have in the community are a great help to the bee
community, Riegel said. Many of the bees [around the
world] are stressed, because they need variety in their diet
and they have to fly so far to get the kind of variety that
they need.
Having a wider variety of flowers within the village makes
it easier for local bees to get the pollen variety they need
within short flying distances. Riegel said its an encouragement to know theyre supporting the bee culture while
beautifying the community.
Through RCES, Riegel received community floral enhancement grants from Wheatland County in 2013 and 2015,
and again in 2016. In 2014, when they didnt receive the
requested grant, local organizations, individuals and businesses covered the costs by adopting planters around the
village.
Were incredibly grateful [to Wheatland County] for the
funding so that we can enhance the community with flowers, Riegel said.
The floral enhancement grants and team of volunteers are
keeping the hamlet of Rosebud abloom.

Metal fans unite
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern
Metal fans from across Canada will descend on Drumheller for the fifth annual
Loud as Hell Metal Festival on July 29Aug. 1.
Described as a pilgrimage for heavy
metal fans, the three-day event has a line
up of 30 Canadian bands from different
genres in metal and is one of the biggest
metal shows in Western Canada.
Now this isnt a huge, crazy outdoor
festival, said Ryan Semchuck, co-founder and co-organizer of the event. It is
more of a smaller festival and usually we
have about 400-500 people out for the
weekend, staying for the three days.
There is on-site camping for metal
fans and a number of other entertaining
features, including food trucks, guitar
and drums clinics for musicians wanting
to improve their skills, a pancake breakfast for the campers; and what Semchuk
refers to as a freak show artists who allow people to staple items to their bodies.
There will also be a Calgary stunt
group called Permafrost Suspension
which specializes in human suspension
demonstrations.
The music, however, is the reason the
fans come out. This years event will
have big names such as Unleash the Archers, Into Eternity and Striker.
Unleash the Archer is a female-led
heavy metal band from Vancouver which
is doing well on the world metal scene,
according to Semchuk. For the Saskatchewan-based band Into Eternity, playing
at this festival will mark their 20-year anniversary in the business.
The other band that Semchuk was excited to have back at the festival is Striker, the 80s-inspired band from Edmonton which has been doing particularly
well in the European metal charts.
The bands will be entertaining their
fans in the barns from noon to midnight
every day.
Semchuk said about 80 per cent of the
fans that make their way to Drumheller
for the festival are non-locals coming
from all across the country and many of
them are returning customers.
It is a great experience, he said. It
becomes like a big heavy metal family
reunion every year.
This reunion is in part thanks to how
the festival organizers have worked with
other metal festival organizers from
Western Canada such as Calgary Metal
Fest, Shredmonton and the Armstrong
Metal Fest to unite the metal community.
Tickets for the festival are still available and can be purchased online (loudashell.com). A weekend pass with tent
camping costs $100. The festival will run
from July 29 to Aug. 1 at the Dinosaur
Downs Stampede Grounds in Drumheller.

Bull Riding
Bull riding has emerged as one of rodeos most popular
events. Who doesnt love unpredictability, a time crunch,
and 2,000 pounds of wild animal? Because the bulls are
selected at random for the riders, this event truly tests the
riders bullsmanship. Bull riding is considered the most
dangerous rodeo sport and one of the most dangerous
professions out there.

pitching and defence were
very steady and when we

Through the five weekend games, the Thunder outscored their opponents - the

Dervin Tanton and his
son Zach Tanton will be
heading to Chicago with the
Calgary PBF Redbirds U13
baseball team, representing Canada in the McHenry
County Youth Sports Association (MCYSA) International Championships starting
on July 22.
Tanton is the teams cocoach, while Zach will play
first base, pitcher and right
field positions.
We are down to our
last couple of practices,
said Tanton. Everyone is
chomping at the bit.
The Redbirds are a travel
team, meaning they play at
many different places, and
are no strangers to playing
south of the border.
The team has played in
Montana a few times this
year and will play in Las Vegas this fall. Tanton said the
team was in all the Montana
games, but they were a little
intimidated at first.
Tanton said the team just
tries to focus on what they
can do and control on the
field and are hoping to carry that strategy forward into
the MCYSA International
Championships.
The MCYSA International
Championships will feature
two separate tournament
sessions with the first taking place July 22-25 and the
second during July 28-31.
Each session is divided into
U15, U13 and U11 teams.
The tournament features
teams from around the
world including Japan, Brazil and Russia.
The Redbirds open the
tournament against Puerto
Rico on July 22. The Redbirds U15 team will also be
attending the tournament.

Developing elite
hockey skills
BRADY GROVE

The 2016 Elite Prospects Camp by Elite Hockey
Development is currently under way at the Strathmore Family Centre. Now in its 11th year, the
Elite Hockey Development camp features players
who have played higher ends of junior or triple-A
midget hockey.
We have a better chance to make them a better
player in the summer, said Doug Raycroft, who
is an instructor and a former assistant coach of
the CFR Bisons triple-A midget team. The only
purpose is to get better for everyone.
Raycroft helped coach the Bisons to a Nationals appearance in 2015 and, as a result, he knows
what it takes to get other players to this level.
Dan MacDonald, who was the head coach of the
Bisons during their National run, is one of the onice instructors.
The camp is broken into two different programs: on-ice training and off-ice training.
The on-ice training is used to develop a players
traditional skills like shooting, passing and skating while also increasing a players compete level
with battle drills.
We work on all the skills every practice, said
Raycroft.
Pass the Salt
Players from Elite Prospects Camp came out on July 14 for an
on-ice session at Strathmore Family Center. The focus of the
practice was high tempo passing and battle drills.
Brady Grove Photo
The off-ice program is focused more on conditioning and strength training for the players. It
emphasizes growing a players speed, power and
agility, but there is an educational component
as well. Players will learn the proper way to eat
through a nutritional guidance program. Players
will also learn on-ice tactics and strategies.
During the month of August, the hockey school
will switch focus to players from the novice to
bantam age range, 7-14. As the players are younger there is more of a teaching component involved
but the focus of the camp is still to improve skills,
conditioning and strength.

Although the fastpitch season is coming to a
close, the Strathmore Thunder fastpitch softball
teams continue to show off their skills.
Recently the U14A team and U16 teams walked
away with big wins. The U16 took home the gold
after winning the Calgary Minor Softball League.
The U14A team ended their season third in the
province in their division, taking home the bronze
medal in provincials.
At the beginning of the season we didnt know
what to expect, said Vince Olsen, the U14A coach.
At the end of the season, they finished third in
the province and it was a pleasant surprise.
The U14A team finished first in the Prairie
league and also went on to win the Premier
League in Calgary against some of the best U14
teams in the city.
Olsen is proud of the fact that the team has
managed to do as well as it had considering the
level the team is playing at with girls all from
Strathmore.
During the provincials, held July 9-10, the U14
team made it through the round robin with four
wins and no losses.
The team allowed only one run in the first four
games and they managed to make three shutouts
during the weekend, a feat Olson said is impressive for girls their age.
They moved on to the finals but were defeated
by Sherwood Park and Red Deer, both of which
moved on to Westerns.

HOW DO I LIVE AND GROW STRONGER
AS A CHRISTIAN?
In order to keep strong in our Christian
life, there are three essentials. Just as in
our physical life we must breathe, eat, and
exercise, so in the spiritual life we must
observe these three essentials to success
and happiness. The Christian life is a
growth, and we must not expect too great
results at first, but, if we follow these three
essentials to Christian life and growth, we
shall have happiness and joy in Christs
service here on earth.
We Grow by Eating
1) First, we must eat. What is the food for
spiritual life? The words I have spoken
to you are spirit and they are life. (John
6:63) When Your words came, I ate them:
they were my joy and my hearts delight.
(Jeremiah 15:16) Daily reading and studying
of the Bible are necessary to spiritual
growth and life. If we do not eat this food
for the soul, we shall not grow, but shall
finally starve spiritually.
We Grow by Breathing
2) Second, we must breathe spiritually.
Prayer is the breath of the soul. l
Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to Pray
continually. And in Romans 2:12 we read,
Faithful in prayer. Do not be anxious
about anything, but in everything, by prayer
and petition, with thanksgiving, present
your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)
Prayer is the opening of the heart to God
as to a friend. Ask, and it will be given
to you. (Matthew 7:7) Prayer and its
answer is a wonderful theme, and a more
wonderful experience. It is the very breath
of the soul. Without prayer, the spiritual
life will perish sooner than from the lack of
any other essential. (See Matthew 7:7 and
Mark 11:24)
We Grow by Exercising
3) Third, we must exercise or engage in
Christian work. We are to labor in Gods
vineyard. (Matthew 21:28) In what part of
it? Mark 16:15 tells us: Go into all the world
and preach the good news to all creation.
Jesus came into the world not to be
served, but to serve, and to give His life as a
ransom for many. (Matthew 20:28)
This is service and salvation for others,
which is very food, and life and exercise.
As we take Christs name, we shall follow
in His steps, doing what we can to help
the needy, relieve the distressed, and
encourage the down-hearted. Most of
all, we shall do our utmost, losing no
opportunity to point sinners to the Lamb of
God, who takes away the sin of the world!
(John 1:29) Feeding on the Word, keeping
the heart constantly in the spirit of prayer,
and consecrating our energies to the
eternal welfare of our fellow menthats
the ideal Christian life, the happiest, most
satisfactory life that man can know on this
earth.
Let me bear my personal testimony its
great to be a Christian! Friend, wont you
give God a chance in your life? Wont you
become a Christian? Wont you take these
steps these steps to Christ?
Do Others See Christ Living in You?
To every Christian listening in, let me say:
If you are living for Christ, you are doing
more than anything else that you possibly
could do to bring men to Him. A missionary
in China was telling of Jesus for the first
time to a group of people in an inland town.
When he had finished, someone spoke up
and said: Oh, yes, we knew Him. He used
to live here.
Jesus in Action
Surprised, the missionary said: No, He
didnt live here. He lived centuries ago in
another land. The man still insisted that
he had seen Jesus, saying: Not so, He
lived in this village. We knew Him. Then
the simple country folk took the missionary
out to the village cemetery and showed
him the grave of a medical missionary who
had lived, healed, served, and died in their
community. Ah, yes, they had seen Jesus in
this man! And they thought he was Jesus.
Dear friends, do people see Jesus in you, in
me? May it be so today.

The Strathmore Venom peewee B
lacrosse team brought home gold in
provincial championship play, while
Strathmore Venom peewee C lacrosse
team took silver in provincials.
The team had the right mentality
this year, said Scott Fargey, peewee
B coach. They were really driven and
were focused all year, especially in
game situations. They were just awesome to coach because they knew what
they wanted to do with themselves and
they were just ready to do what they
had to do to win. I was really proud of
them and they did an amazing job.
To make it to provincials, the peewee
B team won the city championships
back in June. At the provincials, they
played two games on July 8 and two
games on July 9.
The regular season was a good one
for the peewee C team, who ended the
season with 11 wins and one tie. They
also won gold medals at two tournaments during the season.
Lovingly remembered
by your family!
