[The family lived in Gilberts End, Hanley Castle. One morning 6-year-old George was drying his shirt
in front of the fire when it caught fire. By the time his deaf parents realised what was happening and put
out the flames, George had suffered extensive burns and, because it was a bank holiday, they were
unable to get him to hospital until that evening. He died at 8am the next morning. Edith Emily worked
as a kitchen maid for the Preece family in Gilberts End, laying fires and preparing breakfast and then
returning after school to prepare tea. Because her deaf mother was unable to wake her early enough,
she used to get up in the dark and go to the summer house in the Preeces garden until it was light and
the family got up. Although Thomas Voyce was a shoemaker, they never had any money as most of the
cash was used to buy more leather. The family were so poor that, if bread and cheese was on the table,
the cheese was put in a jam jar and the children rubbed their bread on the outside!]
