DM2+ Flexible
voice and data multiplexer
The DM2+ is a member of the Nokia Dynanet family of multiplex,
branching, cross-connect and line equipment. A dynamically
controllable primary multiplexer utilising Dynanet channel unit
selection, it has enhanced flexibility and efficient upgradability.
The DM2+ represents the first stage of European digital
multiplexer hierarchy.

Applications
Basic concept
The DM2+ was designed for multiplexing analogue speech and signalling as
well as data channels of different bit
rates into a common 2 Mbit/s frame.
It can be used:
as a traditional PCM multiplexer in
subscriber and junction line networks;
in corporate networks to provide a
full range of voice, ISDN and data
services;
as one-way branching equipment to
enable the efficient use of channels
in rural areas or in private networks;
for efficient data multiplexing, e.g.,
X.58 and V.110 on low bit rates.
The heart of the equipment is a MUX
unit which is common to all channel
and special units of the DM2+ system.
The MUX unit communicates through a
2 Mbit/s internal bus with the tributary
units and carries out the 2048 kbit/s
framing according to ITU-T G.732 standard.
Specific features
The allocation of an Embedded
Operations Channel (EOC), or Service
Channel, into any vacant time slot in
a 2 Mbit/s aggregate can be used to
extend the Nokia Q1 management
bus. This can be done using the Service Terminal when time slot zero is
not available, for example when using
the Leased Line network. The DM2+
satisfies the Open Network Provision
requirements for leased line networks.
Dynanet channel units
Analogue and digital services are
realized with interface-specific channel
units that connect to the Dynacard bus.
The channel units contain from one to
ten VF, data or ethernet channels.
One-way branching
The DM2+ can be equipped with one
of several 2 Mbit/s Dynanet channel
units to provide efficient digital one-way
branching in chain and tree networks.
Channels from different sites can be
freely and dynamically combined into a
common 2 Mbit/s frame. The dynamic
allocation provides the possibility to
change branching configurations during normal operation. This allows the
flexible utilisation of transmission capacity in rural and corporate networks.
The channel allocation information
can be changed manually by using
the Nokia Service Terminal, or automatically, based on alarms or time
of day by using the Nokia Network
Management System (NMS).

Integrated supervision with
versatile programming
The software-controllable concept
enables a powerful method for configuring the equipment, e.g. changing
channel gains or selecting data channel speeds. The allocation of time slots
to individual channels, for easy routing,
can also be done by software control.
All operations can be done locally or
remotely. The settings are stored in a
non-volatile memory, retaining information even in powerdown conditions.
The facilities include the following:
accurate alarm indication;
time slot selection;
one-way branching of channels;

be placed freely in any vacant unit
space also of other applicable Dynanet
units, so flexibility of the configuration
can be increased.
