1. SCOPE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure & establish correct methodology to carryout
Radiographic Examination of the Welded Joints of 6mm SS 240 Gr. 304L Plate. Procedure
requirements & acceptance criteria of Butt joints having SWSI Technique.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENT AND STANDRED
As per Applicable NPCIL procedure no.: PP E - 2356 REV. NO. 0.

- Non-destructive examination Code.

ASME Sec. VIII Div . 1

- Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

ASME Standard SE 94

- Latest Edition

ASTM Standard E 1032

- Latest Edition

P.O. No. 4520011649, Dated 24.04.2013.

3. GENERAL
X-Ray when passed through a material object, the part of radiation energy gets absorbed
and scatter. The balance is transmitted. The absorption of radiation depends upon density
and thickness of the object in the path of x-rays. The transmitted energy brings out useful
information like change in thickness. Homogeneity defects etc. in the matter. Which is
recorded on a film as a Radiographic Image.
4. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION
Personnel performing Radiography Examination in accordance with this procedure
shall be qualified Lv. I/II from ASNT in Radiography Testing.
5. EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS
5.1 Source

: 1. X-Ray for Material thickness 10mm or less then 10mm

5.2 Film

: Radiograph shall be made by using industrial radiographic films of type

which can give the required quality level. The film shall confirms with class
I/II of ASTM SE-94.

MAKE: Kodak MX 125 (D4)
5.3 Chemicals for Film Processing
Developer - Any approved brand
Stop Bath - Water(0.5 % acetic acid)
Fixer - Any approved brand
5.4 Screens

Front & back Lead Intensifying screens 0.1mm shall be used.

5.5 Penetrameter (IQI)

The Penetrameter shall be made of radiological similar material to the
object being inspected and shall be in accordance with ASTM-E-142 OR
DIN 54109
6. RADIOGRAPHY EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
6.1 Weld Surface Preparation and Surface Finish
The finished surface of all butt-welded joints shall have reasonably uniform and shall
be free from undercuts, overlaps and abrupt ridges. The weld metal reinforcement
shall not exceed the following limits:

Component Thickness (mm)

Upto 12
12 to 25
25 to 50

Maximum Reinforcement
1.6
2.4
3.2

6.2 Single Wall Single Image Technique(SWSI)

In SWSI technique the radiation penetrate through only single wall of weld which is
view on Radiograph.

6.3 Source to Film Distance (SFD)

Source to Film Distance (SFD) minimum for 6mm thk. plate shall be 18 Inch.
Material Thickness (Inches)
Under 2

Ug Maximum(Inches)
0.020

Geometric Unsharpness is given by Equation.
Ug = F x t
SOD
Where Ug = Geometric Unsharpness
F = Source Size in mm
t = Thickness of joint
SOD = Source to object distance
Shooting sketch attached as Annexure A
6.4 Panetrameter Placement
IQI shall be placed on the surface facing the source of radiation across the weld. In
case where this surface is inaccessible, an IQI shall be placed on the film side. ASTM Hole
Type Pentra-meter.
IQI No. 12 on source side preferred.
IQI No. 10 on film side.
6.5 Location Marker
Markers in the form of lead arrows and other symbols shall be placed so that the
area of interest of the weld can be identified on the Radiograph. The placement of
the Location Markers shall be adjacent to the weld.
6.6 Film Identification
The film shall be properly identify and it should include all the information of Line
no. Joint no., Welder Identification, History location marker etc.

7. FILM PROCESSING
Films shall be processed by manual processing in accordance with the ASME-SE-94
and as per the recommendations of the manufacturer. Film shall be free from
mechanical, chemical or other blemishes to the extent that they will not mask or
confuse image of any discontinuity in the area of interest in the Radiograph.
When Manual Processing is done, following processing conditions shall be maintained;
Temperature
Developing Time
Stop Bath
Fixing Time
Final Wash

: 20C to 25C
: 5-6 minutes
: 30-60 Seconds
: up to 10 minute
: 20 minute

8. EVALUATION OF RADIOGRAPH
8.1

QUALITY OF RADIOGRAPH:

a) All the radiographs shall be free from chemical, mechanical handling related or other
blemishes which could interfere with proper interpretation of the radiograph.
b) Each radiograph shall be examined for processing defects and shall be considered not
interpretable when one or combination of the following defects are seen on radiograph:
- fogging
- processing defects such as streaks, water marks
- damage to emulsion, scratches, crimps, static marks
- discoloration due to improper fixing or washing
- loss of detail due to poor screen to film contact
- strain marks
8.2

RADIOGRAPHIC DENSITY:
8.2.1

DENSITY LIMITATION:

The transmitted film density through the radiographic image of the body of appropriate
penetrameter and the area of interest shall be 1.8 minimum for single film viewing for
radiographs made with an X-Ray source. A tolerance of 0.05 in density is allowed for
variation between densitometer readings.
8.3

FILM CONTRAST:
Contrast of the film shall be adequate to manifest on the radiograph even the smallest
thickness differential. Better the contrast better the interpretation of discontinuity.

8.4

SENSITIVITY:
The radiograph under evaluation shall display the pentrameter wire image. Sensitivity shall
be 2% and hole size shall be 2

8.5

RADIOGRAPHIC ACCEPTANCE STANDARD:

For acceptance, Radiography films and discontinuous revealed in welds shall be interpreted
as per acceptance standard of applicable ASME Sec. V. / Sec. VIII Div. 1. Appendix 8.

8.6

RETEST:

ASSOCIATED ENGINEERS & ALLIED PRODUCTS

B-97,(I) INDRAPRASTHA INDUSTRIAL AREA, KOTA-324005(RAJ.)
Retest of the repair area shall be carried out in accordance this procedure with proper repair
No.

8.7

EXCSSIVE SCATTER:
If the image of symbol B specified in clause 5.3 appears on the radiograph as a lighter
density than background, it is an indication that the protection from back scatter is
insufficient and the radiograph shall be considered unacceptable. A dark image of the
symbol B on a lighter background is not a cause for rejection.

8.8
