GROWING WITH GOD

Have you connected with this weeks devotionals? I know I
have and I decided to take a baby step into my own personal space
and look at some of my books and decide if they bring me joy or just
clutter up my life. How do we know when enough is enough? I
began with my cookbooks. In my mind I believed I had about 12, but
the reality was I had close to 40. Whoa, how did that happen? The truly funny thing is, I do
not cook. Dont like it, never will, so how did I end up with 38 cookbooks? As I browsed
through each one, I asked myself, did it enhance my life, did it bring me joy? In the end I kept
2, our old church cookbook and a family one I had forgotten because it had been lost in the
stack. That was a sad realization but also a God shot. I feel a seed has been planted and I am
beginning to look at my life in a new light. I hope you are starting to answer the question,
what brings you joy and what is truly important in your life?

Hurricane Matthew Response Update

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul,
"therefore I will hope in him." Lamentations 3:21-24 (NRSV)

Since Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti last Tuesday as a Category 4 storm,
Week of Compassion has been in ongoing conversation with partners in the Caribbean and the Southeastern
United States. Even as damage is being assessed in the affected regions, we are working with our partners to
develop response plans and providing relief and assistance. Early reports and actions are detailed below.
UNITED STATES
Hurricane Matthew affected the Southeastern coastal regions of the United States, including Florida,
Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Phone communications remain out in some affected areas, and
power outages continue, contributing to concerns about food security and health. Multiple rivers have yet to
crest in North Carolina, so additional flooding is a continued risk.
Week of Compassion is in communication with Disciples regional staff and churches. Multiple
Florida churches incurred damage. According to the most recent reports, church buildings in North Carolina
seem to have fared well, though several member families' homes have been flooded.
Week of Compassion will respond through the regions and local congregations to provide immediate
relief and assistance and anticipates a long-term presence.

As Always, You Can Make a Gift to the Week of Compassion

Hurricane Matthew has proved to be one of the most devastating storms to hit the United States in
many years, not to overlook the damage it did in Haiti and other Caribbean nations. From past experience, we
know that the absolute best way for us Disciples to respond to this, and any other natural disaster, is by
making a gift to the Week of Compassion. Why? Its the disaster relief arm of our denomination.
This past Sunday, in response to Mandyes announcement about making gifts to Week of
Compassion to help those impacted by Hurricane Matthew, we received $372. We assume that many were not
prepared to make a gift to the Week of Compassion this past Sunday. Our gifts in any amount will be
welcomed this Sunday, or any Sunday in the weeks ahead. Simply write Hurricane Matthew on the memo
line of your check, or designate a cash gift for this purpose and put it in the offering plate. EVERY PENNY we
give will go directly to help people whose lives have been turned upside down by this disastrous storm

Seniors Meet Tuesday

October 18, 2016
The Seniors Ministry
Group meets this coming
Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at
12 noon in Chapman Lounge
for our monthly meeting.
Our speaker this month is Rev. Dr.
Norman L. Williams, PSWR Disaster Recovery
Ministries. Dr. Williams will be speaking
about his work regarding Disaster
Preparedness and Relief in the Regional
Church. We continue to hear about potential
strong earthquakes in our area and we know
from the news that other events are always
possible such as fires, flooding and attacks. If
we are better prepared, we will be able to
better cope which is one of the goals of our
ministry.
Save the date, bring your lunch and
join us Tuesday, October 18. We will also be
planning our Thanksgiving Luncheon. See you
then.

David Matson Exposes the

True Context About Wives,
Submission, and Slavery
Dr. David Matson presents his
third lecture in this four-week series
on the book of I Peter this Tuesday in
Chapman Lounge at 7:00 p.m.
Last Tuesday, 23 persons heard the original
context in which these infamous words about
citizens obeying elected rulers, slaves obeying
masters, and wives obeying husbands were
presented in I Peter 3:13-17
In brief, they used the structure of the
ancient "household codes" that organized life
around how in a well-ordered world the individual
contributes to the whole. But the writer's intention
was not blind submission is often interpreted. His
intention, expressed at the end of the verse 3:1 is
MISSION. Matson quoted our Disciples biblical
scholar, Eugene Boring, as showing this text is
more about MISSION than SUBMISSION.
Like this: Those exiles addressed in this
writing were reborn by God in Christ and are now
FREE from any such religious or societal codes. In
their freedom, however, they may freely choose to
participate in the hierarchical household codes in
order that they may be noticed for their respect of
these orderly codes and thus gain the right to
present the mission of Christ, calling their
politicians, slave owners, and spouses into the
transforming power of God's glorification of them.
So, in the end, the wives bear the Christ power to
lead their husbands into the glory-changing
relationship with Christ! They who seemingly
"submit" lead with authority!
In our time, we need to determine how best
to win the respect of our culture (which may be
quite different than the first century household
codes) in order to witness to the distinctive mission
of Christ to bring our own lostness into a rebirth
and glory which transforms our society, and at
times, subverts its priorities and values.
Join in next Tuesday as we discover what
suffering brings to this mission, as well as further
controversial challenges presented to exiles and
what they (like us) are to be and do in their new
status with God!

Sign Up to Write An Advent

Devotional |
Our own Advent
Devotional booklet is well
underway! A number of firsttime contributors have already signed up. A
large poster with list of the days of Advent and
scriptures to sign up is in the Narthex.
Specifically, we ask individuals and families to
write a one-page Advent devotional no longer
than 250 words which we will be publishing in
a booklet and reading each day in Advent,
Nov. 27 - Dec. 25.
You may either write on the scripture
given for a particular day in Advent, OR you
may share a special memory of a Christmas
tradition in your family OR you may
contribute a photo or artwork that speaks to
you of the theme for that day. We will need
your digital or paper contribution in the
church office no later than Nov. 10.
The remaining days and scriptural
themes available are listed on the board in the
Narthex on pages in the Caller
If you would like to see a sample of a
previous year's Advent guide, one or more will
be available in the church office.
This year we are very pleased to
welcome Rev. Lee Yates as our very talented
layout and design editor. Expect a very artistic
booklet we can all be proud of, one published
in paper and available as a daily reading sent
out electronically and available on the web.
Please contact our editor, Barry
Woodbridge, with any questions, suggestions
for inclusion, or other ideas you may have.

Reconciliation Offering
Concludes On Sunday
On October 9nd an
additional $50 was received for
the 2016 Reconciliation Offering.
These gifts brought the total received toward
the $840 goal to $ 690. Even though we didnt
make our goal, we are most grateful to
everyone who shared in this special offering
which provides grants to congregations and
regions to fund anti-racism projects in the US
and Canada. Half of the amount raised
through our offering will come back to our
Region.

Three Weeks from Now

The annual Alternative Christmas Faire is
just three weeks from this Sunday, that is, Sunday,
November 6. It begins at 11 A.M. while most of us
will be in worship and it concludes at 2 P.M. Many
people will assist Jill Scott, Lori Albrecht, Sara
Caswell and Mary Ann Richmond, in setting up for
the Faire, as well as for taking everything down
when it concludes. Others will be serving as hosts
at some of the ables where a wide variety of
organizations that help people in need will offer
:alternative gifts.
If you are not one of the volunteers
involved in putting on this event, we encourage
you to do two things to support it. We assume
those who are giving their time to make the event
happen are committed supporters.
First, we invite you to come to the event
following the worship service and to make a gift to
support at least one of the participating
organizations. The organizations represent local
ministries, such as Pathways of Hope and Habitat
for Humanity, and international ministries, such as
Heifer International and Church World Service. We
will provide a full list of the groups that will be
present for the Alternative Gift Faire in the Caller
issue prior to Sunday, October 23 so you will have
ample time to determine the groups you want to
support with a gift.
Second, we encourage you to invite a
friend, neighbor, colleague from work, and/or a
family member to meet you at this event so they
can join you in doing some of their Christmas
shopping/gift-giving. Wed love for this years
event to have at least 100 to 125 donorseven
more. That will only happen if each of us takes the
initiative to invite others to come to the Alternative
Gift Faire.
For your convenience, since the bulk of
the time the AGF will be open is over the lunch
hour, tri-tip and bratwurst sandwiches will be
available for sale, along with soft drinks and water.
Finally, this event, unless it rains, will be
held on the Plaza, just east of our Fellowship Hall
and Kitchen. If it rains, the event will be brought
into Fellowship Hall. The location could not be
more convenient for us to make a conscious
decision to diversify our Christmas giving through
our support of the 2016 Alternative Gift Faire!
