ABSTRACT
The basis of this project was to create a new design of hostel for SWAMI VIVEKANAND
COLLEGEOF ENGEENIRING , INDORE
so that student can accommodate in safe and
economical environment for coming years. This project not only brings out money for the college
in the way of new accommodations but also facilitate students with more space and activity.
This has been design accordingly the provisions of ALL INDIA COUNCIL FOR TECHNICAL
EDUCATION and ALL INDIAN STANDARDS CODE . Project planning is made on AUTOCAD
and designing is made on Staad pro v8i under which live load and dead loads and are included
which make structure more safe and secure and provide more strength to hold on during
disasters.
The objective behind the project is to provide a new hostel structure for the college which is very
cost effective and which can easily be expand in future . This is also economy in terms of time
because it is made help with of software with no or less errors.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL
The education students receive today determines the quality of all our lives tomorrow. We
prepare our students in the liberal arts, business principles , technical skills along with that
a student must know how to work in team, leadership quality and must be self dependent.
Thus we have tried to give a good source to provide them such a environment to them by
building a boys hostel for first year students. A hostel is an establishment which provides
inexpensive food and lodging for a specific group of people, such as students, workers, or
travellers.
1.2 IMPORTANCE OF PROJECT
As some students residing away from family for getting good education, so we have tried
to develop such comfortable environment.
On the other hand increasing recession everything is not that much affordable by
parents.
Every parents want safe and economical lodging for their child who has to live apart for
education purpose, that requirement is fulfilled here.
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY
To make a study about the planning and design of college hostel building.
To make a study about the guidelines for the design of RCC structure according to IS
Code and Indore bhoomi vikas pradhikaran
Getting familiar with structural softwares (Staad Pro & AutoCAD).
Getting real life experience engineering practices.

1.4 BUILDING BYE LAWS & REGULATIONS
A by-law (sometimes also spelled bylaw, by law or bye-law) is a rule or law established by an
organization or community to regulate itself, as allowed or provided for by some higher authority.
The higher authority, generally a legislature or some other government body, establishes the
degree of control that the by-laws may exercise. By-laws may be established by entities such as
a business corporation, a neighbourhood association, or depending on the jurisdiction, a
municipality. Building by laws are made to ensure orderly development of localitiesin urban
areas so that every houses is assured of good ventilation and no building affects the lighting
and ventilation of neighbours.

Floor Area Ratio
Floor area ratio (FAR) (also floor space ratio (FSR), floor space index(FSI), site ratio and plot
ratio) is the ratio of a building's total floor area (gross floor area) to the size of the piece of land
upon which it is built. The terms can also refer to limits imposed on such a ratio.
Floor Area Ratio=
(Total covered area on all floors of all buildings on a certain plot)

The Floor Area Ratio (FAR) or Floor Space Index (FSI) is the ratio of the total floor
area of buildings on a certain location to the size of the land of that location, or the limit
imposed on such a ratio.

The Floor Area Ratio is the total building square footage (building area) divided by the
site size square footage (site area).

Thus, an FSI of 2.0 would indicate that the total floor area of a building is two times the
gross area of the plot on which it is constructed, as would be found in a multiple-story
building.
1.4 What is a hostel ?
HOSTEL IS ALSO CALLED A DORMITORY.
The words "hotel", "hostel", and "hostal" are etymologically related, coming into the English
language from Old French hostel, itself from Late Latin hospitale, denoting a "hospice" or
place of rest. Nowadays, however, they each refer to distinct types of accommodation. In
particular, hostal is used in Spanish either with the same sense as "hostel", or it can also
refer to a certain type of pension which is found mostly in Spain.

Hostels provide budget-oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a bed,
usually a bunk bed, in a dormitory and share a bathroom, lounge, and sometimes a kitchen.
Rooms can be mixed or single-sex, although private rooms may also be available.Hostels
are generally cheaper for both the operator and the occupants; many hostels have longterm residents whom they employ as desk clerks or housekeeping staff in exchange for
free accommodation.

1.4.1 Hostelling International
Some HI Youth Hostels cater more to school-aged children (sometimes through school
trips) and parents with their children, whereas others are more for travelers intent on
learning new cultures. However, while the exploration of different cultures and places is
emphasized in many hostels, particularly in cities or popular tourist destinations, there
are still many hostels providing accommodation for outdoor pursuits such as hill
walking, climbing, and bicycle touring; these are often small friendly hostels retaining
much of the original vision and often provide valuable access to more remote regions.

1.4.2 Independent hostels
Independent hostels are not necessarily affiliated with one of the national bodies of
Hostelling International, Youth Hostel Association or any other hostel network. Often, the
word independent is used to refer to non-HI hostels even when the hostels do belong to
another hostelling organization such as SIH[6] and Backpackers Canada.[7]The term
"youth" is less often used with these properties. These non-HI hostels are often called
"backpackers' hostels". Unlike a hotel chain where everything is standardized, these
hostels can be very diverse, typically not requiring a membership card. There are chains
of independent hostels throughout the world such as the Jazz Hostels on the East Coast
and Banana Bungalow Hostels on the West Coast of the United States, or the Generator
Hostels and Equity Point Hostels of Europe, or Hostel of India.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 GENERAL
Generally speaking, building codes are developed by well intentioned people who are
actively involved in the construction industry. Their original purpose, as stated in the CABO
One and Two Family Dwelling Code, is "to provide minimum standards for the protection of
life, limb, property, environment and for the safety and welfare of the consumer, general
public and the owners and occupants of residential buildings regulated by this code."
However, it is important to keep in mind that building codes are adopted, modified and
enforced by local politicians and government officials. Something else to remember
about building codes is the fact that they "are not intended to limit the appropriate use
of materials, appliances, equipment or methods of design or construction not specifically
prescribed by the code, provided the building official determines that the proposed alternate
materials, appliances, equipment or methods of design or construction are at least
equivalent of that prescribed in this code

2.2 IS codes
2.2.1 IS-456:2000
IS 456-2000Plain and Reinforced Concrete - Code of Practice is an Indian Standard
code of practice for general structural use of plain and reinforced concrete. The latest revision of
this standard was done in year 2000, reaffirmed 2005. This code uses the limit state design
approach. It is written for use in India. It gives extensive information on the various aspects of
concrete. IS 456 is considered as the Bhagwat Geeta for Civil Engineers in India.
It contains five sections and eight annexure :
Section 1: General
Section 2: Materials, Workmanship, Inspection and Testing
Section 3: General Design Considerations
Section 4: Special Design Requirements for Structural Members and Systems
Section 5: Structural Design (Limit State Method)
The structural practice handbook SP:16-1980Design Aids for Reinforced Concrete toIS:4561978 has tables and charts that helps structural engineers to rapidly design simple sections.
Even though the design aid is based on the 1978 code, it continues to be used without revision
as there have been no major changes to Section 5, on which the design aid is based.
The IS 456:2000 must be read along with other Indian Standard codes which supplement it:
IS:13920-1993 (Reaffirmed 1998) Ductile Detailing of Reinforced Concrete Structures
subjected to Seismic Forces - Code of Practice
SP:34-1987 Handbook on Concrete Reinforcement and Detailing (This handbook needs
to be revised based on the changes to the detailing clauses of IS:456-2000)
2.2.2 AICTE NORMS
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the statutory body and a national-level
council for technical education, under Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human

Resource Development Established in November 1945 first as an advisory body and later on in
1987 given statutory status by an Act of Parliament, AICTE is responsible for proper planning
and coordinated development of the technical education and management education system in
India. The AICTE accredits postgraduate and graduate programs under specific categories at
Indian institutions as per its charter
To provide for establishment of an All India council for Technical Education with a view to the
proper planning and co-ordinated development of the technical education system throughout the
country, the promotion of qualitative improvement of such education in relation to planned
quantitative growth and the regulation and proper maintenance of norms and standards in the
technical education system and for matters connected therewith.

2.2.3 IS 875 (Part 1)
Live loads are usually unstable or moving loads. These dynamic loads may involve
considerations such as impact, momentum, vibration, slosh dynamics of fluids, etc. Live loads,
or imposed loads, are temporary, of short duration, or a moving load. These dynamic loads may
involve considerations such as impact, momentum, vibration, slosh dynamics of fluids and
material fatigue.

Live loads, sometimes also referred to as probabilistic loads, include all the forces that are
variable within the object's normal operation cycle not including construction or environmental
loads.
Roof and floor live loads are produced during maintenance by workers, equipment and
materials, and during the life of the structure by movable objects, such as planters and people.
Bridge live loads are produced by vehicles traveling over the deck of the bridge.

CHAPTER 4
METHODOLOGY
4.1 GENERAL
For planning of the building AUTOCAD software is used.In AUTOCAD we used following
commands for making plan -:
4.1.1 AUTOCAD
AutoCAD is a commercial software application for 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and
drafting available since 1982 as a desktop application and since 2010 as a mobile web- and
cloud-based app marketed as AutoCAD 360.
AutoCAD is used mainly by drafters, although engineers, surveyors and architects may need to
use the software from time to time
4.1.2 STAAD PRO
STAAD or (STAAD.Pro) is a structural analysis and design computer program originally
developed by Research Engineers International at Yorba Linda, CA in year 1997. In late 2005,
Research Engineers International was bought by Bentley Systems.
It can make use of various forms of analysis from the traditional 1st order static analysis, 2nd
order p-delta analysis, geometric non linear analysis or a buckling analysis. It can also make
use of various forms of dynamic analysis from modal extraction to time history and response
spectrum analysis.
In recent years it has become part of integrated structural analysis and design solutions mainly
using an exposed API called open staad to access and drive the program using an VB macro
system included in the application or other by including Open STAAD functionality in
applications that themselves include suitable programmable macro systems. Additionally
STAAD.Pro has added direct links to applications such as RAM Connection and
STAAD.Foundation to provide engineers working with those applications which handle design

post processing not handled by STAAD Pro itself. Another form of integration supported by
STAAD Pro is the analysis schema of the CIM steel Integration Standard, version 2 commonly
known as CIS/2 and used by a number modeling and analysis applications.
We used following some basic commands for making plan -:

CONCLUSION
This project introduce new hostel for swami Vivekananda college of engineering,
Indore which helps in accommodating students for upcoming sessions.
The project provides a cost effective hostel building, which can withstand on the seismic
forces at Indore region.
The project provides economy in terms of not only time but in terms of money also
because it has been created using software with minimum or no errors and flexible plan
to which can be further more expand in future according to requirement.
This project is for g+1 storey, but in future it can be easily turn for g+2.
This project is beneficial for both institution and students.
