L GN JIN YNG () is a Chinese expression that is
very appropriate for Tungs Acupuncture. It can be translated
as Stand a pole under the Sun and immediately see its
shadow. In other words, you should get immediate results.
Thats how acupuncture should work.

STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
Who was Master Tung?
Master Tung ChingChang (, DNG JNG CHNG DSH)
was born in 1915 in the Shandong (, SHNDNG) Province
in Northern China. The Tungs family orthodox acupuncture is
based on many generations of Tungs family teachings.
Tungs Acupuncture was a secret tradition, exclusively passed
down within the family. Master Tung Ching-Chang broke this
tradition and accepted his first disciple outside the family, over
50 years ago.
There are hundreds of Tungs unique acupuncture points
distributed mostly on the extremities of the body. Tungs
acupuncture is well known for its unique set of points, being
a complete system that includes its own channels, unique
points and needling techniques. Tungs acupuncture is based
STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
on a five zang (and six fu) channel system, different from the
traditional 14 channels of acupuncture.
And also, Tungs acupuncture is a complete acupuncture
tradition that predates the traditional 14 channels system. The
origin and principle of each of Master Tungs points follow the
law of the five elements (, W XNG) and the five zang (
, W ZNG) channels. Each point has its own pathway which
directly connects to the five zang and six fu.
Tung or
Dong?
Master Tung is sometimes
called Master Dong. The
reason for this is because
Master Tung originally took
the Wade-Giles romanization
system of his surname ,
Tung, before the pinyin (
, PNYN) system became
popular. Though pinyin is
the prefered romanization
system now, many people
prefer to use Tung as
the name was originally
translated and also as Master
Tung himself preferred.

Tungs Acupuncture
Principles
 Local areas never needled.
 Fewer needles.
Distal treatment the most distal the better.
Contralateral needling for pain or structural problems. For
chronic conditions, bilateral.
Bilateral needling for treating organ systems.
Tung style acupuncture does not need the use of the diagnostic
methods (pulse, tongue etc.) or terminology adopted by the TCM
acupuncture.
Tungs acupuncture is very safe since most of its points are
located on the bodys extremities.
If the patient has a defiiciency, energy will be pushed toward it. In
case of an excess, energy will be pulled from it.
Needles are never inserted at the site of pain or injury.

Holographic
Theory
The word holographic comes from the Greek holographos
(literally written in full, from holos whole + graphos written).
The Holographic Theory in acupuncture states that a small part of
the body can treat larger areas of the body.
Ear and abdominal acupuncture, Korean hand acupuncture (Koryo
Sooji Chim) are examples of holographic systems, since they can
treat the whole body.
An important example of holography in Tungs acupuncture is the
second metacarpal bone. There are four points on the lateral side of
the bone that can treat a large area of the body. LNG G () and
D BI (), two very commonly used points, are among those.
In Tungs acupuncture there are many other examples, such as the
set of points 88.17 (, S M ZHNG), 88.18 (, S M SHNG)
and 88.19 (, S M XI) which can also be used to treat a larger
area of the body.

Tungs Acupuncture
Techniques
Qi moving (, DNGQ) technique
When inserting a needle to treat an injured area, always ask the
patient to move that area, or do it for him if he is unable to do so.
For example, if the patient has TMJ pain (Temporomandibular Joint),
the point 66.03 (, HU YNG) can be used. By the way, here is an
example of feet treating head or bottom treating top. So, when
you needle the point, ask the patient to move his jaw.
This way, the body will know what you are trying to accomplish and
the Qi will be directed to the affected area..
19
STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
Dao Ma (, DO M) technique
The Dao Ma (, DO M), translated as inverted horse, technique
uses two or three points combined, most commonly arranged in a
vertical line or along a channel, to increase needle stimulation.
These points are located relatively close to each other, usually no
more than two or three cun apart. On the hands and fingers, these
points are usually closer, less than one cun apart, sometimes a few
fen apart. In fact many of Tungs unique points are arranged in two
or three point sets, meaning that these Dao Ma groups are always
needled in combination rather than as single points.
The goal is to achieve more effective and immediate results when
needling points distal to the area of disease.
For example, the points 22.04 (, D BI) and 22.05 (, LNG G)
are a very common Dao Ma combination. They are always needled
together.
20
STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
How long should the needles stay in?
According to the Huang Di Nei Jing Ling Shu (,
HUNGDNIJNG LNG SH), the energies Wei Qi (, WI Q) and Ying
Qi (, YNG Q), cycle 50 times through the body during a 1-day
period. Considering that 1 day has 24 hours (1440 minutes), each
energy cycle takes approximately 28 minutes to complete.
So, after the last needle is inserted, in general, they should be left
in for at least 30 minutes. 3045 minutes is an adequate period of
time.
It is important to note that the retention of the needles also depend
on personal (strong/weak, young/old), disease (deep/superficial.
chronic/acute), seasonal (warm/cold, morning/evening) conditions
and individual point properties.
Tissue Type Correspondence
There are five types of Tissue Correspondence in the Huang Di Nei
Jing. These relationships are part of the holographic theory:
In diseases of the bones, treat bones: needle close to a joint or
the junction of multiple bones in order to treat joint or bone issues.
For example, point 66.04 (, HU ZH), is needled close to the
joint to treat knee pain.
In diseases of the muscles and tendons, treat muscles and
tendons: Points 77.01 (, ZHNG JN) and 77.02 (, ZHNG ZNG)
are located on the achilles tendon and in imaging and holography
21
STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
are therefore used to treat lumbar sprain and neck muscle stiffness.
In diseases of the vessels, treat vessels: Points 44.08 (, RN
ZNG), 44.09 (, D ZNG) and 44.10 (, TIN ZNG) not present
in this edition are located near the radial artery. They can treat
disorders of the Heart, atherosclerosis, and blood circulation issues.
In diseases of the flesh, treat flesh: In this correspondence, needle
in locations of abundant flesh, such as in the upper thigh, where the
points 88.17 (, S M ZHNG), 88.18 (, S M SHNG) and 88.19
(, S M XI) are located. These points can be used to treat flesh
problems in the body, such as atrophy, flank pain, upper back pain
etc.
In diseases of the skin, treat skin: Here, you can needle very
superficially. This can be used to treat neuropathy, dermatitis and
loss of hair. By needling superficially, it only affects the skin level and
not the muscle or flesh levels. In five-element theory, treating the
flesh level can be used to generate metal (related to the lungs) and
influence the skin level as well.

Distribution
23
STUDY NOTES ON MASTER TUNG'S ACUPUNCTURE
Zones Distribution
There is a numbering
convention created for nonChinese speakers which helps
locating the area in which the
point is. The sequence is related
to the order in which the points
were presented in Tungs
original 1973 book, Tungs
Regular Meridian and Points.
Zone 1 is the fingers, zone 2 is
the dorsum and palm of the
hands, zone 3 is the forearms,
and so on.
Traditionally, when the points
numbers are setup, the zone
number is doubled. This
means that zone 1 becomes
11 (not eleven, but one-one),
zone 2 becomes 22 (two-two),
all the way to zone 1010 (tenten).
For example, point D BI ()
is numbered 22.04, meaning it
is the fourth point on the hand.
Point HU YNG () is 66.03,
the third point on the dorsum of
the foot.
