Bench Ball (Modified Handball)
Passing drills with a partner or group
(10 minutes)
- Students will make a group of 2-4 stand at opposite
ends of the gym
- Try to perform all 3 passes that are demonstrated
- One hand pass, Overhead pass, and Bounce pass
Passing the Ball to your team mate with a across
the body pass, overhead pass and the bounce
pass.
MAIN BODY
Guiding Inquiry and Practise
All passing will be thrown with your
dominant arm
The across the body pass thrown across your
body with one hand, the catcher uses two
hands when receiving the pass.
The overhead pass uses one hand to pass, it is
aimed at the chest of your team mate via a
lob
The bounce pass is aimed at the hip area of
your team mate and is done by making the
ball hit the ground once.
Australian Curriculum :
- Demonstrating an understanding of how to adjust
the angle of release of an object and how this will
affect the height and distance of flight
(40 minutes)
Students will undertake a game of bench ball that
requires the same rules of handball (dribbling,
passing, etc), however has a modified method of
scoring
For a team to score, they must pass the ball to the
catcher standing on the balance beam, which
are found at each end of the gym. (1 for each
team)
Once the catcher has caught the ball, the
thrower must then join them on the balance beam
and become the another catcher
This means that the scoring team will have 2
points and therefore have one less player on the
field
The game is completed once all players (except
1) are on the balance beam, or if the 10 minute
time limit is completed. The team with the most
players on the balance beam after 10 minutes
win.
If you step off the balance beam in any way, you
must return to the game and therefore lose a
point for your team.
