Moon Phases
If you look into the sky, youll notice that every
night the Moon changes. These different views
are known as the Phases of the Moon.
Does the Moon create its own light?
The Moon is a secondary light source...like a
reflector on your scooter, it reflects the light that
hits it. The Moon reflects visible light from
the sun.
How much of the Moon is lit up?
of the Moon is always bright and thus
(yes thus is a word) half is always dark. What
you see is do to your perspective on Earth.
Phases of the Moon
Moon Calendar
It takes the Moon
almost 30 (29.5)
days for the Moon to
go through its entire
cycle.
What causes the Moons phases?
The Moon is a
secondary light
source. It reflects light
from the Sun.
The Moon is
constantly revolving
(What is revolving?)
around the Earth
and reflecting the
Suns light back
towards Earth.
Moon Cycle
Draw a + and then an
x through it.
Please dont make it
tougher than its gotta
be!
The Earth
In the center of your
shape please make a
circle for the EARTH!!!
The Sun
Place the sun all the
way to the right of
your chart.
New Moon
Also referred to as the
Dark Moon...I
wonder why? We are
going to put this at 3
oclock on our chart.
Waxing Crescent
1:30...do you think
you can tell where the
sunlight is coming
from?
First Quarter
12 oclock...many
people would call this
a half moon...why?
Waxing Gibbous
10:30... of the moon
is illuminated by the
sun. The Moon is a
______________ light
source
Full Moon
9 oclock...at this point
the entire moon is
illuminated...at least
from our vantage
point.
Waning Gibbous
7:30...make sure
youre drawing neatly!
Third Quarter
6 oclock...the second
half moon
Waning Crescent
4:30 the final
crescent...and
New Moon
And we are back
again!!!

Thats how you know
Earth Moon Sun= EMS
its bad for you!!!
What else happens...
Of course, the solar eclipse is the ultimate reason that you
look at the sky. However, there are smaller shows that are
taking place at the same time. When the Sun is completely
blocked, some of the brighter stars and planets become
more visible. Sometimes you can see a small comet as it
travels its path near the sun. Become aware of your
surroundings here on Earth: birds don't chirp, bees stop
flying and there is a stillness of the Earth that is strangely
quiet. The temperature drops without the heat of the sun
during a solar eclipse.
Tides
Tides are the rising
and falling of sea level
in relationship to the
land. This is caused
by the gravitational
pull of the Moon,
Sun and the Earths
rotation.
Tides
The pull of the Moon
is strong enough to
create a bulge in the
water, causing a high
tide.
