Phonological and Phonemic Awareness
Phonemic Awareness is the ability to hear and mentally manipulate individual sounds.
Phonological Awareness is a larger term that includes this ability as well as the ability to
mentally manipulate onsets and rimes. These skills are the building blocks of reading.
Research indicates that fluency in these skills is vital in early reading acquisition.
In this product, I have tried to compare voiced and unvoiced families (ab vs. ap), word
families with and without ending blends (et vs ent), and consonant nasals (mp, nt) in order
to deepen a childs fluency in hearing and manipulating sounds.
Many of my products are designed to develop a childs fluency in Phonological and
Phonemic Awareness. I use pictures so that the child can listen to his/her own voice and
feel for the sounds themselves. It is important with all picture sorting activities for the
teacher to introduce pictures in advance so that the student to encourage independent
success and minimize teacher interruptions.
