To Whom It May Concern,
I am seeking to provide quality patient care and apply specialized knowledge in obstetrics as a
labor and delivery nurse. I am excited for the opportunity to apply and enhance my skills in an
obstetrical RN position.
I believe that I have the qualifications required for this position. As a recent graduate from the
University of Arizona College of Nursing BSN program, I feel confident in the acquired
knowledge and skills I have gained. During nursing school, I completed 75 clinical hours in
obstetrics and 180 hours in my labor and delivery preceptorship. These hands-on experiences
allowed me to utilize specialized knowledge to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care
catering to the unique needs of the patient. My curriculum has prepared me for specialized tasks
pertinent to labor and delivery, such as performing maternal and newborn assessments,
measuring cervical dilation to determine labor progression, consistently monitoring fetal heart
rate, and applying critical thinking skills to high-stress, fast paced situations.
One of the most important qualities that a labor and delivery nurse can have is strong critical
thinking skills. As a nursing student, I have experienced acute care situations that demanded
quick thinking and action based on best judgment, such as a patient coding. During high-acuity
situations on the labor and delivery unit, I hope to utilize my acute attention to detail and refined
communication skills to optimize patient outcomes and team collaboration. Finally, I hope to
foster the leadership abilities that I have developed as Professional Officer Course Cadet during
the last four years in the Air Force ROTC program at the University of Arizona. I believe that,
given the opportunity, I can be a positive influence to others on my unit and collaborate
effectively to promote a healthy work environment.
Being a labor and delivery nurse would not only allow me to utilize my capabilities, but would
also provide me with an opportunity to grow as a professional and develop invaluable skills in
this specialty. I would appreciate the opportunity to meet in person through an interview so that I
