The United States

Constitution
Men from each of the 13
colonies held a meeting, the
Continental Congress, to write an
important document in 1787. Its
name is the Constitution of the
United States of America, and
it lays out a plan for the federal
government.

Three Branches
The Constitution divides the
government into three parts.
Each branch has a job and each
branch has equal power. No part
of the government can dominate
the rest of the government.
The writers of the Constitution
made checks and balances.
Each branch does its job and watches over the other two branches,
too. For example, the president selects a Supreme Court judge. The
Senate votes to agree or disagree with the choice. This is one way
that the branches check each other.

The Legislative Branch

The legislative branch makes new laws. It is called Congress.
Congress is made of the Senate and the House of Representatives
(rep-ri-ZEN-tuh-tivz). Each state has two senators for a total of
100 senators. In the House of Representatives, the number of
representatives from each state is based on how many people live
there. Big states send many members, and small states send fewer.

The Executive Branch

The executive branch sees that the laws are followed. The
president heads the executive branch. The Constitution states that
the president must be at least 35 years old and born in the United
States. He or she must have lived in the country for at least 14 years.
The vice president must take charge of the executive branch if the
president dies.

The Judicial Branch

The judicial branch decides what the laws mean. It includes all
the nations courts. The courts decide if Congress has passed a law
that goes against the Constitution. When that happens, the law is
struckdown.
The U.S. Supreme Court is the
highest court and has nine judges.
The Constitution canonly be
changed with an amendment. There
have been just 27 amendments. The
first 10 amendments are called the
Bill ofRights.
