The Boeing 747-400 incorporates evolving technology into what is the world's
most modern and fuel efficient airliner in
commercial operation today. The
Vickers Aerospace, Marine, Defens
Group is a recognized leader in advanced-technology hydraulic, pneumatic and electrohydraulic components,
controls and assemblies, demonstrating

of 870,000 lbs. (394,632 kg), the 747
-400 is capable of accommodating up to
550 passengers, non-stop for up to
8200 statute miles (13,140 kin).
The 747-400 design embodies technological advances in aerodynamics,
structural, materials, avionics and interior design. The most notable aerodyetsdsgedo
reduce fuel burn and extend the 747
-400's range are the six-foot longer
wings with six-foot-high winglets; angled
upward and slightly outward. Winglets
offer a fuel burn improvement of about
three percent. The wing-to-body fairing
has been recontoured for drag improvement,
The Hydraulic System
The 747-400 hydraulic system supplies
power for the flight controls, braking,
steering, trailing edge flap and landing
gear actuation. Hydraulic power is supplied by four separate 3000 psi (207
bar) hydraulic systems.
The number two and number three hydraulic systems (number two and number three engines) are reserved for flight
controls and each have an engine driven pump and a motorpump.
All
systems, however, are connected to
peak hydraulic demands. In addition,
the hydraulic system has been organized in such a way that normal flight
capability is possible with only two of the
four hydraulic systems operating. The
aircraft can be flown under emergency

Valve Assembly
This central hydraulic power manifold
is used in each of the four main hydraulic systems of the Boeing 747-400
aircraft. One is mounted at each engine and collects output flow from the
engine, air drive, and electric pumps.
The assembly filters the flow of hydraulic fluid for use inthe hydraulic
system. Also provided is a ground
service quick disconnect for filling or
testing, main system relief valve and
dual pressure switches for indication
of system pressure availability.
This assembly is a two position valve
which provides positive flow control with
3000 psi (207 bar) operating hydraulic
pressure. This unit is used as a bypass
valve in the Boeing 747-400 stabilizer
trim control system, the trailing edge flap
control system, and also the wing gear
alternate extend system. The assembly
is a cartridge style plug-in
module using a D.C. motor driven 90 degree rotational actuator. Motor output
speed is reduced, and torque multiplied,
by means of three planetary gear passes.
A manual override lever is provided
which, when operated, de-clutches the
gear train and moves the output shaft as
required. The manual operating lever
also serves as a position indicator

valve providing flow in proportion to the _ _ _
difference between the pilot's commanded position and the actual flap
position. In addition, the module contains a flow limiter that limits the maximum rate at which the flaps can move
as well as giving flow priority to the
brakes or other systems if pressure decreases to 2000 psi (138 bar) or below.
A motor operated bypass valve is included to depressurize the system in
flight or, in the event of an asymmetrical
flap condition. Two assemblies are utilized in each aircraft. One assembly
controls the inboard flaps and one controls the outboard flaps.

Hydraulic Solenoid Valve
This is a normally open, solenoid (dual
coil) operated, hydraulic shutoff valve.
This hydraulic solenoid valve is capable
of millions of cycles and is used in the
Boeing 747-400 stabilizer trim system.
This valve is typical of solenoid operated pilot valves used extensively
throughout the aircraft hydraulic systems.

Dual Brake Pressure
Metering Valve Assembly
This assembly is installed in the main
landing gear wheel well and is controlled by the pilot through a mechanical system of linkages, quadrants and
cables. The purpose of the unit is to
control the hydraulic actuation pressures to the brakes as a function of
input force. Included in the assembly
are two force command metering
valves for modulating brake pressure
and a de-spin actuator to stop the
wheels from spinning upon landing gear
retraction. Input to the metering valves
is by means of a splined common shaft.
Input to the de-spin actuator is hydraulic
pressure from the aircraft's hydraulic
system. The same valve is used on the
757 and 767.
