Decription
These rail clamps are storm brakes suitable for high
forces: from 250 to 1500 kN.
They are self-blocking type; in case a force acts on the
crane and tends to put the same into motion, they press
on the rail sideways. This pressing gets stronger as the
crane moves. The rail clamps can withstand horizontal
force only.
The value of forces indicated are calculated with friction
coeff. of 0.25 (see after).
As the real coeff. in normal conditions is much higher
(approx 0,59 - TUV German register certificated), the
rail clamps can generate higher forces. Higher safety
and braking shoes life are guaranteed
Advantages of self-blocking system
Thanks to its working concept, the holding force given
by the self-blocking rail clamp is a reaction to the force
applied by the wind. The force given by the clamp is
equal to the force of the wind deducted the force given
by gantry brakes; this means that also the pressing
force applied by the jaws to the rail side surface is, in all
condition, the minimum needed to hold the crane in its
position with proper safety factor.
The clamp start pushing on the rail sides only if the
wind force overcomes the gantry brakes capacity.
All what above allows total intensity and working hours
in a year to be almost negligible.
With regard to braking shoes, optimized design, careful
choice of material, developed heat treatment cycles
(combining correct surface hardness and necessary
core ductility), guarantee both best performances and
long life.
Above described features lead to following advantages:
1) Jaws duration is very long (our experience is that
jaws life reaches also 10 years)
minimising replacement needs.
2) All mechanical components are working quite seldom
and most of times under low
loads, minimizing maintenance needs.
The holding capacity doesnt decrease
significantly for reasons of wear of braking
shoes.
Holding capacity doesnt suffer variation of
width of rail, being this clamp able to absorb
differences of +/- 1,5 mm respect to the
nominal width of the rail
Vertical allowance of the position respect the
rail of +/ 12 mm is big enough to permit a
fixed installation also in the middle of the seal
beam (no wheels are needed)
Independence of the holding force from the
fatigue deriving from heavy duty cycle (the
absence of springs renders this device suitable
to the continuous open/close applications)
Fast opening with law power: opening is made
just rising up the light weight of the calliper (not
working against strong springs and wasting
energy)
Working at low pressure with life advantage for
hydraulic components
Particular suitability to high speed cranes
thanks to the free movement:
Since while the crane is travelling, the braking calliper is
lifted up over the rail level, we can adopt a very wide
gap between guides and rails (10 mm or more), with the
benefit of very seldom contacts.
This, together with accurate choice of guide materials
and treatment allows a long duration of guides.
Friction coefficient (TUV certified)
On new generation of self blocking rail clamps it has
been applied a very innovative concept of variable
friction coefficient.
To maximize the safety, calculated average working
friction coefficient is around 0,25, while the friction
coefficient of our braking shoes it is much higher (0.59
also in the worst conditions, i.e. presence of grease on
the rail, certified by German Register TUV). Real high
values of working friction coeff. (always below
guaranteed level) are needed only in extreme wind load
conditions, therefore very seldom.
Advantages in comparison with spring types
We would like to underline here the main
disadvantages of spring rail clamps (and rail
brakes) respect to self blocking type:

Further advantages of self-blocking system
The transversal (vertical) force applied by the jaws
to the rail side (top) surface is always at maximum
value, causing both wear of rails and wear of jaws
(maintenance manual of spring clamps indicate a
control of jaws wear and relevant periodical
substitution)
The holding force decreases with wear of jaws
requesting than, to keep the needed safety of the
crane, frequent interventions of substitution.
The allowance regarding the width of rails is similar
to brand new rail tolerances causing a weakening
of the holding force in case of rails wear.
To allow big vertical movements respect to the rail,
requested in case of installation on the crane main
frame, spring clamps are to be realised in the on
trolley execution generating an increase of
maintenance needs (wheels, pin, lubrication, etc.).
In case of heavy duty application (several opening /
closing cycles during the day) the springs loose
force and come to collapse because of fatigue,
than have to be replaced often

In case a fast opening is required, a big power
hydraulic unit must be used with high cost and
waste of energy since cylinders are working
against the strong spring force.
Rail brakes need to be installed only at centre of
gantry equalizers.
System is operated at very low pressure level (abt 7,5
MPa) increasing largely the duration of hydraulic
components, while on spring rail clamps pressure are
quite high (more 15 Mpa). Higher values of pressure
could be found only in case rail clamps have to be
unlocked after high wind load application.

This rail clamps are to be considered as parking
devices (safety against the movement caused by wind)
and they work pressing on rail sides.
The jaws are connected to the frame by a swinging
pendulum device. In closed position (ready to work)
the jaws lean on the upper surface of rail but they don't
apply any force to the side-surface of the rail. When the
wind force is stronger than the blocking force given by
the gantry drive brakes, and a small movement of the
crane starts, the inclined planes of the blocks, moving
with the crane frame, oblige the rollers to push the
friction shoes against the sides of the rail.

at page 9/10/11).

Braking shoes of our rail clamp have been designed to
work on rails commonly on the market whose hardness
is between 200 and 270 HB ( = 70 to 90 daN/mm).
The certification of TUV are referred to above given
values of rail hardness.
In case of different values we must be informed at
order, Because this could affect the rail clamp
functioning.
Channel features
In the case what above shown cannot be respected,
we have to be informed about effective conditions
at offer stage.

OPERATING
Opening of Rail Clamps
A hydraulic cylinder in pressure opens the rail clamps,
this is achieved by:
a)
b)
starting the motor of the hydraulic unit by
closing its remote control switch,
energising the coil of the electric pilot check
valve installed in the unit.
The power is sufficient to release the rail clamps without
moving the crane.

Closing of Rail Clamps
Since clamp must close onto the rail only after crane
stop, clamp closure is delayed through the use of a
fixed flow regulator shop calibrated for a delay of 8 s.
Different values can be given upon request at order;
shorter values are not recommendable since
dangerous.
In addition to this an adjustable flow regulator is
provided to increase the delay up to further 4 s.
The fixed flow regulator solution has been adopted to
minimize the variation of the delay upon temperature
variation.
We suggest the client to inform us always about
requested delay at order, to optimize the
calibration.

Rail Clamps
Each rail clamp is composed by:

Steel framework with lifting lugs and removable
hinged inspection doors;
Steel levers and counterweight;
Pins in stainless steel AISI 420;
Heat treated steel rollers and sliding blocks;
Guides with rail sweeping device;
Steel jaws with braking shoes in 39NiCrMo3,
knurled. quenched and tempered;
Hydraulic cylinder for rail clamp opening with piston
road in NIKROM (carbon steel + Ni + Cr); The
cylinder is easy replaceable in ca. 20 min;
Stainless steel tie-road for emergency manual
release;
Inductive limit switches for clamp release indication
and restore hydraulic unit. Protection IP 65;
Inductive limit switches for jaws position IP65;
External grease lubrication fittings button head
type;
Bolts, if diameter is less than 12 mm in stainless
steel, if over galvanized.

It is suitable for sea-environment, completely
assembled, wired, oil filled and flushed (acc. NAS 9).
Cover in carbon steel with hinged door.
All the electrical components are wired on option into
electrical box (protection IP 55)
Emergency
manual
opening
device
For the emergency manual opening device we use a
stainless steel tie rod assembled inside the rail clamp.
To open the rail clamp is requested only the turning of a
nut by a standard key tool.
The advantages of this system in comparison with the
one with hand pump are the following:
The opening is possible even in case of damage of
the cylinder or of the flexible hose for the
connection to the cylinder.
The rail clamp remains open in the time with
absolute security while in the hand pump execution
eventual small leakages into the cylinder or into the
cock valves may cause the undesired closing of the
rail clamps.
Standard painting (only frame and external
parts)

The logic control of the rail clamps closing is
established by the user. The rail clamps are usually
closed at the end of the crane work, or on signal of a
suitable anemometer which signals that the wind speed
is higher than the max. allowed speed.
As the electro-valve has to be always excited, the
magnet must be in direct current; if the customer wants
to feed the coil valve with alternated current, a suitable
rectifier is to be supplied.

Warranty is subject to the following condictions:

The electric diagram is made accordingly to the
scheme we suggest (SCE-TA-01) or is made
accordingly to a scheme designed by client but in
any case approved by us.
All maintenance procedures described in the
manual provided with the supply are observed. In
particular must be strictly observed the rules
relevant to cleanliness and filters replacement.
In case one or more of above conditions should not be
respected, the guarantee will be considered not valid.
Testing
Total thickness : 210 micron.

Surfaces preparation: Sandblasting SA 2 .
1 Coat: Moist curing inorganic two-component zinc
primer. Consists on complex ethyle silicate and
zinc dust in high rate (>86% in dry film).
Thickness = 70/80 micron
2 Coat: Two-component epoxy-polyamide primer
and undercoat with zinc phosphate and micaceous
iron oxide.
Thickness = 80/90 micron
3 Coat: Two-component aliphatic acryl-urethane
based paint no yellowing. Reacoatable for long
time.
Thickness = 60/70 micron
All the rail-clamps are tested on a test bench before
delivery, at a nominal force power.
Final colour: Standard RIMA RAL 5019.

Hydraulic oil: ISO VG 15.
Grease: SKF LGLT2.
The documentation is worded according to EG
(89/392/EWG) e Euro-EN 292-1/2; 1991 D rules.
Electric control unit
It is usually foreseen by the crane manufacturer by
means of relays or PLC. On request, it can be supplied
on plate or in a box (IP 55).
Here after is illustrated the sketch we suggest, which
foresees the use of a suitable temporised relay (dwg.
SCE-TA-01).
This relay is necessary to signal possible malfunctions
in the hydraulic unit (for ex. oil deficiency or breakages
of some hydraulic or electric components). Through this
solution temperature and limit switcher are not needed.

These rail clamps are storm brakes static suitable for
small to medium forces: from 50 to 500 kN.
They are spring actuated; the spring exercise the
closing force while an hydraulic cylinder fed by a
suitable hydraulic unit provides the opening.
The value of forces indicated are calculated with friction
coeff. of 0,25 or 0,5.
As the real coeff. is much higher (approx. 0,59) the rail
clamps can withstand higher forces.
These rail clamps, subject to appropriate modifications,
can be used also to brake the crane in running. For
further information, please contact our Technical Dept.
We can offer rail clamps with two friction coefficient:
0,25 and 0,5.
The 0,25 value guarantees an higher safety factor and
very long life of braking shoes.
This friction coefficient value (0,25) is moreover
requested in several countries (according to the
relevant standards over there applicable) like for
example Italy, Japan, Slovenia, Serbia and Croatia.
Main European standards (DIN and FEM) are also
foreseeing a friction coefficient value of 0,25 but
allowing the use of higher value, provided that this
value is certified by a suitable register in all possible
working conditions.
To fulfil this requirement, our braking shoes are certified
by German Register (TUV) in several working condition
like wet rail, rail with grease, etc., both in case of new
shoes and in case of shoes with a certain degree of
wear.
Technical features

Installation: side bolted;
Vertical float = 7,5 mm (to be checked upon rail
type);
Horizontal float = 30 mm;
Tolerance respect to nominal width of the rail =
1,5 mm;
Opening time (signal for operation) = 4 seconds;
Closing time = adjustable from 4 to 12 seconds.
On request these values can be modified.
Utilization / functioning
These rail clamps are to be considered as parking
devices (safety against the movement caused by wind)
and they work pressing on rail sides.
Each rail clamp is composed substantially of one steel
frame, two jaw guides and two jaws operated by springs
trough suitable levers.
The jaw guides are placed into the frame in such a way
to follow side displacement between crane and rail.
Friction coefficient (TUV certified)
When breaking shoes are new the actual friction coeff.
in every situation is = 0,59
This value decreases lightly with wear of shoes.
The breaking shoes are to be replaced when the
nominal value of friction coefficient is reached (Detailed
instructions are given in the Use and Maintenance
Manual).
The guides are constituted by plates properly shaped
acting on side of the rail. In particular cases, rollers
acting on the head sides of rail can be used.
As the braking shoes, properly knurled, guarantee
friction coeff. of 0,59 approx. there is a good safety
factor respect to the nominal catalogue performance
where the friction factor computated is 0,25 0,5 .

Operating
Braking shoes of our rail clamp have been designed to
work on rails commonly on the market whose hardness
is between 200 and 270 HB ( = 70 to 90 daN/mm).
The certification of TUV are referred to above given
values of rail hardness.
In case of different values we must be informed at
order, Because this could affect the rail clamp
functioning.
Opening of Rail Clamps
The pushing force given by the hydraulic cylinder under
pressure opens the rail clamp. It is achieved by:

Starting the motor of the hydraulic unit by closing
its remote control switch
Energizing the coil of electrovalve of the unit.
As the insertion of electrovalve stops the oil flow from
the cylinder to the tank of the unit, the pump driven by
the electric motor raises pressure into the cylinder
which, with its movement, opens the rails clamps.
During its opening, the cylinder through a suitable limit
switch gives the signal of clamp open and allows the
crane to run.
Then the pressure switch stops the motor pump group.
Should small leakages cause a cylinder retractiong, the
pressure switch would restart the pomp motor to
restore original situation, avoiding the limit switch of
crane travel to stop the crane.

Closing of Rail Clamps
The closing of rail clamp is obtained by de-energizing
the electrovalve.
In such way a passage between the cylinder and the
tank is opened; the cylinder closes itself under the
action of springs.
The closing is controlled through a flow control valve
that gives the delay necessary to allow the stop of the
crane by the drives / service brakes.
Opening time: approx. 4s
Complete delay: adjustable from 4s to 12s

Cylinder for rail clamps opening
Spring providing the closing force
Inductive limit switch which indicates "rail clamps
open" and allows the gantry crane travel.
Rail clamp and hydraulic unit covers are in inoz
AISI316.
Hydraulic Unit (SCI-TM-01)
It is suitable for sea-environment, completely
assembled, wired, oil filled and flushed (acc. NAS 12).
Cover in carbon steel with hinged door.
All the electrical components are wired, on option, into
electrical box (protection IP 55)
Emergency manual opening device
The rail clamps is supplied with suitable tie-rods
complete with nuts. Acting on the nuts with a common
key tool it is possible to open the rail clamps in case of
emergency (lack of tension or hydraulic unit broken).

Electric control unit
It is usually foreseen by the crane manufacturer by
means of relays or PLC. On request, it can be supplied
on plate or in a box (IP 55).
Here after is illustrated the scheme we suggest (SCETM-01), which foresees the use of a suitable
temporised relay. This relay is necessary to signal
possible malfunctions in the hydraulic unit (for ex. oil
deficiency or breakages of some hydraulic or electric
components). Through this solution, temperature and
level switches are not needed.
The logic control of the rail clamps closing is
established by the customer.
The rail clamps are usually closed at the end of the
crane work, or on signal of a suitable anemometer
which signals that the wind speed is higher than the
max. allowed speed.
The signal of closure of the rail clamp can be put under
a timer to achieve an adjustable electric delay (in
addition to the delay hydraulic).
As the electrovalve has to be always excited, the
magnet must be in direct current; if the customer wants
to feed the coil valve with alternated current, a suitable
rectifier it is supplied.
Total thickness : 210 micron.

Surfaces preparation: Sandblasting SA 2 .
1 Coat: Moist curing inorganic two-component zinc
primer. Consists on complex ethyle silicate and
zinc dust in high rate (>86% in dry film).
Thickness = 70/80 micron
2 Coat: Two-component epoxy-polyamide primer
and undercoat with zinc phosphate and micaceous
iron oxide. Thickness = 80/90 micron
3 Coat: Two-component aliphatic acryl-urethane
based paint no yellowing. Reacoatable for long
time. Thickness = 60/70 micron

The electric diagram is made accordingly to the
scheme we suggest (SCE-TM-01) or is made
accordingly to a scheme designed by client but in
any case approved by us.
All maintenance procedures described in the
manual provided with the supply are observed. In
particular must be strictly observed the rules
relevant to cleanliness and filters replacement.
Final colour: Standard RIMA RAL 5019.
In case one or more of above conditions should not be
respected, the guarantee will be considered not valid.

A suitable inductive limit switch gives the signal of
brake open and allows the operation of gantry travel.
Utilization and functioning
Rail brakes, suitable for medium forces from 20 to 300
kN (securing cranes against the wind force) work
pressing down on the top of rail by disk springs. Brakes
are hydraulically released. Usual parking utilisation
requires a few closing / opening cycles per day.
Then a pressure switch calibrated at higher value stops
the pump motor.
In case small leakages should cause a pressure
decrease, the pressure switch would start the pump
motor restoring the correct pressure, without stopping
the crane.
The design friction coeff. is 0,5.
They are usually installed in the middle of crane gantry
travel (One per crane corner).
Advantages
Closing of rail brakes
The closing of rail brakes is obtained by de-energizing
the electrovalve.
The oil flows to hydraulic unit and the rail brake is
closed by the springs.
No affected by rail conditions
Suitability of application with rail embedded into
pave. ( Rail channel filled)
Low price
The closing time is controlled by means of a flow
regulator valve ( installed directly on the brake to work
also in case of hose braking), that generate a delay to
allow crane stop before brake closure.
Disadvantages
Generation of vertical forces (it is necessary to check
the effect of vertical forces on crane and run-way).
Technical features
Installation: upper flange;
Vertical float = see drawings;
Horizontal float = 25 mm (could change
depending on rail type)
Opening time (consent to gantry operation) = see
drawings;
Closing time = adjustable from 4 to 12 s;
On request these values can be modified.
Friction coefficient (TUV certified)
Design holding force is calculated with a friction coeff.
= 0,5 (certified by TUV German register).
With new braking shoes the friction coeff in the worst
condition is = 0,59.
This value decreases with wear of shoes.
The braking shoes are to be replaced when the 0,5
value of friction coefficient is reached (Detailed
instructions are into Operation and Maintenance
Manual).

Hydraulic oil: ISO VG 15.
The brake force on the top of the rail is generate by the
disc springs inside the rail brake.
Easy replaceable braking shoes made in 39NiCrMo4,
knurled and quenched are mounted on spherical joint.
The braking shoes are suitable to work on rail that have
the upper surface flat or curved. The jointed side is
made in C40 tenifered. Piston rod of rail brake is C40
quenched and tempered and large-thickness chrome
plated. An inductiveLimit-switch indicates brake open.
A G3/8 hole is at the upper side of brake body for the
connection to the oil tank to keep always springs in oil
bath (it increases the efficiency and life of springs). A
G3/8 hole is given (for the connection to the pump ) to:
Flow control valve for calibration of closing time
(pre-calibrated at workshop at the requested
value). This time does not change even in case
of breakage of flexible hose.
Ball valve, necessary to keep the brake open
(under pressure) even without hydraulic unit.
More over this valve is necessary to open the
quick coupling under pressure.
Quick coupling necessary to connect the brake
to hand pump (supplied upon request). Through
this way it is possible, in emergency, to open
the brake even if the hydraulic unit cannot work.
Electric control unit
It is usually foreseen by the crane manufacturer by
means of relays or PLC. On request, it can be supplied
on plate or in a box (IP 55).
Here after is illustrated the scheme we suggest (SCETP-01), which foresees the use of a suitable temporised
relay. This relay is necessary to signal possible
malfunctions in the hydraulic unit (for ex. oil deficiency
or breakages of some hydraulic or electric
components). Through this solution, temperature and
level switches are not needed.
The logic control of the rail clamps closing is
established by the customer.
The rail clamps are usually closed at the end of the
crane work, or on signal of a suitable anemometer
which signals that the wind speed is higher than the
max. allowed speed.
The signal of closure of the rail clamp must be put
under a timer to achieve an adjustable electric delay.
As the electrovalve has to be always excited, the
magnet must be in direct current; if the customer wants
to feed the coil valve with alternated current, a suitable
rectifier it is supplied.
Hydraulic Unit (see SCI-TP-01)
RAIL
It is suitable for sea-environment, completely
assembled, wired to terminal box IP55 and flushed
(acc. NAS 9).
Cover in carbon steel with hinged door.
Braking shoes of our rail clamp have been designed to
work on rails commonly on the market whose hardness
is between 200 and 270 HB ( = 700 to 900 N/mm).
The certification of TUV are referred to above given
values of rail hardness.
In case of different values we must be informed at
order, Because this could affect the rail clamp
functioning.
Emergency manual opening device
By hand pump that can be supplied loose (with tank
and cock) or assembled on the hydraulic unit (according
to client request). It is suggested the loose solution
because one hand pump can be used to open more
brakes. It can be operated even in case breakage of
pipe connecting to hydraulic unit.
Testing
All rail brakes are tested to check the springs force.
Standard painting
Documentation
Total thickness : 210 micron.
The documentation is worded according to EG
(89/392/EWG) and Euro- EN 292-1/2; 1991 D rules.
Surfaces preparation: Sandblasting SA 2 .
1 Coat: Moist curing inorganic two-component zinc
primer. Consists on complex ethyle silicate and
zinc dust in high rate (>86% in dry film).
Thickness = 70/80 micron
2 Coat: Two-component epoxy-polyamide primer
and undercoat with zinc phosphate and micaceous
iron oxide. Thickness = 80/90 micron
3 Coat: Two-component aliphatic acryl-urethane
based paint no yellowing. Reacoatable for long
time. Thickness = 60/70 micron

Removal
Brake its easy to remove from the crane in any
condition.
It is foreseen a mechanical device that allows a manual
opening also in case spring compression through
hydraulic unit or hand pump would be impossible for
example due to internal seals braking.

Function
The brake is provided with side flange.
These brakes are devoted to parking utilization,
securing the crane, in stowed condition, against the
wind force, therefore, in their normal utilization they
have to be closed when the crane is completely
stopped. In emergency condition they can be operated
also as dynamic brakes to stop the crane.
The braking shoes, pressing on the two sides of a
wheel, are actuated by springs and released by
hydraulic power.
In the standard execution, the brakes are designed for a
few opening cycles per day, and a heavy duty execution
is available under request, for particular applications
where a high number opening cycles per day is needed.
A limit-switch to signal the brake open is foreseen.
A 3/8 connection hole (brake opening side brake) is
foreseen, at this connection is also installed:
Ball valve necessary to keep the brake open (in
pressure) even without hydraulic unit. More over it is
necessary to open the quick coupling in pressure.
Quick coupling, necessary to connect the brake to hand
pomp. In this way it is possible, in emergency, to open
the brake even if the hydraulic unit can not work.
The opposite hydraulic connection is also a 3/8 hole
that is used to keep the springs in oil-bath guaranteeing
their efficiency and life.

The above opening/closing times are calculated with 1
hydraulic unit feeding 4 brakes.
The braking force is calculated with a wear of the
braking shoes of one mm respect to the thickness of
new shoes.
This coefficient is depending upon the surface condition
of the wheel, in presence of grease, lubricants, coal
dust or similar, etc. the coefficient may decrease.
The design braking force is calculated with a friction
coefficient of 0,4.

Hydraulic unit
It is suitable for sea-environment,
assembled and wired to a keyboard.
The unit is including:
completely
1,5 kW electric motor according to CEE rules,
protection IP 55, tropical execution, V = 400 V ; 50
Hz. With anticondensation heater and thermistor
protection.
Gear pump 5 l/min.
Electro-valve with coil easy replaceable, voltage
according to client request.
Installation
In most of cases it is foreseen the installation of a wheel
brake on each idle wheel.
An hydraulic unit each four brakes is usually foreseen.
Execution
The force exercised by brake on the two sides of wheel
is given by disc springs.
The braking surfaces of the wheels must be machined
with tolerances and roughness according to the above
indications.
Braking shoes in friction material are hinged and easy
replaceable.
The brake is opened by hydraulic cylinder positioned
inside the brake by suitable hydraulic unit.
Piston rod of cylinder is in AISI 420 quenched and
tempered and large-thickness chromeplated.

equipment of all the crane. We supply an electrical
indicative diagram.
Warranty
12/18 months
Warranty is subject to the following conditions:
A) The electric diagram is made accordingly to the
scheme we suggest (SCE-FR-01) or is made
accordingly to a scheme designed by client but in
any case approved by us.
B) All maintenance procedures described in the manual
provided with the supply are observed. In particular
must be strictly observed the rules relevant to
cleanliness and filters replacement.
In case one or more of above conditions should not be
respected, the guarantee will be considered not valid.
