Parts of a Whole (Still Life)
Students will be able to observe and draw from life.
Students will demonstrate proportion, composition, tone, balance, and
dimension.
Students will be able to work with different artistic mediums, such as paint,
graphite, colored pencils, and mixed media collage.
Students will create a still life drawing and use four different artistic
mediums to capture the shape, dimension, shading, and highlighting of the
piece. The students will be using graphite, colored pencils, acrylic paint,
and mixed media (magazines) to achieve this. Students will have one class
period of three hours to complete this task. This lesson will employ drawing
from life and working with different mediums.
By having the students work with different mediums, they develop an
understanding of how those mediums work, how they can be used, and
how to incorporate them into various works of art.

and co-teaching models (station
teaching, or parallel teaching)
Working with many different mediums will help the students become more
comfortable with them and will aid them during future assignments.
The teacher will talk about still life drawings. The teacher will show a
PowerPoint displaying different still life pieces in different mediums. This
will help the students get an idea of how to work with the different mediums
they will be using.
Students will be drawing a still life that is rendered from the objects set up
by the teacher.
Students will be creating this still life on 11x14 paper and should utilized
the entire picture plane. The initial picture should just be done in pencil and
should not be shaded, etc.
Once the students have completed their initial drawing, the teacher will
show a picture of how they can divide their paper. The students should
divide their paper into four parts, but they should not draw a four square
that divides the paper into equal parts (get creative).
Once divided, the students may choose which section will have which
medium.
Students will be using acrylic paints in one section, graphite drawing
pencils in one section, colored pencils in one section, and mixed media
magazine collage in one section. This is when the students should create
dimension and detail.
Students should be referencing the objects in front of them when creating
the dimension and shading.

Check for Understanding
Students will have one class period of three hours to work on this piece.
Any questions or clarifications will be answered by the teacher. These
pieces should incorporate all the mediums specified.
Students should work independently and reference the objects for shading,
tone, proportion, composition, etc.
Once the students have finished, the teacher will briefly recap the concept
of still life drawings and why it is important to draw from life. The teacher
will talk about the different mediums and ask which one the students
enjoyed working with the most. The students should go around the room
and look at each others finished products.
The students should then display their work for the class to see. From
there, the students should engage in discussion and critique of the finished
products. The students should be able to see the different artistic decisions
made by their classmates.
From here, future still life lessons will focus entirely on one medium (paint,
collage, graphite). This assignment is successful in getting the students
comfortable with working with the different mediums.
