Mini Jet Directional Drilling: Trenchless Technology

The Mini-Jet drill is a trenchless technique for installing pipes up to 50 meters long and 200 mm in diameter beneath roadways, railways, and other paved areas. It consists of a compact directional drilling machine, hydraulic unit, and bentonite injection unit. The process involves first drilling a pilot hole using high pressure fluid injection to orient the drill head. Then a reaming head enlarges the hole and the pipe is pulled through while injecting bentonite. The Mini-Jet drill reduces disturbances during installation, restoration requirements, and greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional trenching. It can be used to install pipes for drinking water, sewage, telecommunications, electricity, gas, and remote distribution applications.

Description
In order to reduce raw material usage and all nuisances caused by the installation of networks, SADE (ISO 9001
and 14001 certified) has developed various environmental directional drilling methods. Amongst the equipment is
the Mini-Jet drill for crossing of roadways, railways, paved ways and areas as a trenchless technique.
The Mini-Jet drill consists of a compact directional drilling machine, a hydraulic unit (5-ton mini-excavator) and a
bentonite mixture injection unit. This drilling equipment is used for installing pipes (PE, steel, etc.) on lengths up to
50 m of diameters up to 200 mm.

Process

Advantages

Phase 1: pilot hole

Environment friendly
High
pressure injection of a fluid (bentonite) in the dril- Reduced disturbances and nuisances
ling head, equipped with a detectable probe to facilitate
completion deadlines
Reduced
the orientation
Reduced
of the inlet and outlet excavations
Significantdimensions
Drilling with rod train into ground
reduction of ground surface restoration require ments (more
than 80%)
Phase 2: reaming and installation of the pipe
Reduced
greenhouse
effect gas emissions (-70%)
Removal

of the drill head after drilling through to the

access pit
Reserve drilling with reaming head for required diameter (one or more reaming operations can be performed)
Hooking of the pipe to the end drilling rods
Pulling the pipe towards the access pit and by injecting
bentonite

Scopes of application
