Library Brochure

History:
The Dyal Singh Public Library was established in 1928 at Lahore initially, in pursuance of the Will of Sardar Dyal Singh
Majithia (1848-1898) - a great philanthropist and social reformer of 19th century Punjab.
After the partition of India, through the efforts of Dewan Anand Kumar, the first Vice Chancellor of Punjab University, the
Dyal Singh Public Library was established afresh (1954) in the institutional area of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, New Delhi.
It is run by Dyal Singh Library Trust Society.

Library Hours:
Monday to Saturday from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm except Sundays and all gazetted holidays. Transaction of books/ magazines
will be entertained till 5.00 PM.

Membership:
Reference membership:
The membership of the library is free to everybody. In this category library resources can be used in the library
only. An individual is required to submit duly filled requisite form recommended by a responsible member of the
public acceptable to the library along with his identity proof. Once enrolled as a member of the library, an individual
will be issued a membership card as identity of bonafide member.

Lending Membership:
Lending Membership may be obtained by filling the requisite form recommended by a responsible member of the
public acceptable to the library along with the proof of residence and by depositing a sum of Rs.500/- (Five
Hundred Only) as refundable security. Eight borrower tickets (four for books and four for back issues of
periodicals/magazines) will be issued to each member.

General Rules:
Safe custody of the membership card at all times is the responsibility of the member concerned. In case of loss of the card,
library should be informed immediately in writing, however, a duplicate card will be issued to him/ her at the sole discretion
of the library management after collecting appropriate penalty.
A member is required to show his/ her membership card whenever asked by the library staff.
Lending period is two weeks and loan may be extended further only once for another two weeks provided there is no
reservation. For overdue books member has to pay late fee at the rate of Re. 1.00/- per day for each volume.
In case of non-payment of overdue charges library is authorized to make necessary deduction from his/her security deposit
with the library.

The borrower tickets are Non-Transferable and borrowed book(s) shall not be transferred from one member to another.

Library Collection:
Presently library has a collection of about 40,000 books in English, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. Literature, Social Sciences,
History, International Relations and Philosophy are the core subject strengths of the library. Library has also a good
collection of books in the field of modern knowledge viz. computer sciences, management studies and engineering. In
addition library is subscribing over 100 magazines and 23 national newspapers

Internet Service:
Internet services are available in the library.

Children Section:
To provide exclusive services to the children, a separate air-conditioned children wing has been set up with creative
ambiance having Audio - Video equipments and paintings.
People from every corner of the city can easily approach the library as the area is well connected by all means of transport
including Delhi Metro.
