Multiply Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands
Lesson Essential Questions: How does understanding place value help you multiply tens,
hundreds, and thousands?
Standards:

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to multiply tens,
Assessments
The problems that the students will
hundreds, and thousands by whole numbers complete in class will have them practicing
through 10.

thousands. The teacher will be circulating
making sure that the students are doing
them correctly.
Materials:
White boards and markers
Go Math! Math books
Smart Board
Strips of paper
Cup
Turn to Learn Multiplication
Pre-lesson assignments and/or prior knowledge: The students have been practicing and
have had lessons on multiplication.
Lesson Beginning: The teacher is going to begin the lesson with a game called
multiplication kaboom so the students can recall their multiplication facts. The teacher
will also explain that the book Turn to Learn Multiplication will be in the front of the
room for any of the students to use as a reference.
Instructional Plan:
The teacher will have the students open their math books to the chapter that is
about multiplying by tens, hundreds, and thousands.
After the students open their books the teacher will explain how to use place value
to multiply using the examples provided.
There are other strategies mentioned but the lesson will focus on using place
value.
The teacher will work on a few examples in the front of the room and then the
students will work in their math books.
If the students finish early they can continue to play multiplication kaboom or
play math games on the computer.
-Differentiation:
The teacher will be walking around while the students work in their books and
will help those who need it
While working in their books the students can work with a partner and check their
answers with a partner.
The students that finish early will know ahead of time what they should do when
they are done
-Questions:
How can place value help us multiply?
What are some strategies to help us multiply?
How do we rename numbers?
-Classroom Management:
The teacher will be monitoring the game of multiplication kaboom
The students are familiar with the protocol of getting their materials and bringing
them to the carpet for math
The teacher will be walking around the room as the students work on the
problems in their math books
-Transitions:
The teacher will give a 5 minute warning before the end of class so the students
can put their materials away and get ready for the next class
Closure: When the students are finished working on the problems in their math books
they can either continue playing multiplication kaboom or play math games on the
computer.
