We will go over the learning objective and the
essential question as a class. We will read
them as I can statements.
I will be able to classify vocabulary
related to geography and apply
cardinal and directions onto a map.
I will be able to assess maps to
determine hemispheres and the
importance of reading maps.
Essential question: How does map reading
help us make sense of our world, locally and
globally?
Once we are done reading through the
objectives and EQ, I will begin to introduce
the essential vocabulary for this unit on
maps, directions, and relative location.

To read maps and understand geography, you

need to be able to identify the parts of the

Middle Childhood Education

map that help you read it and make sense of

it. For example, the key on a map is the box
in one of the corners of a map that helps
explain the symbols and colors on the map.
You will also see that there is what is called a
compass rose on almost every map. This is
what tells you the direction something is
using N, S, E, or W (North, South, East, and
West). I will go through each vocabulary word
and the definition.
1. Geography-The study of the earth
2. Cardinal directions- The directions
north, east, south, or west
3. Latitude- The distance north or south of
Earths Equator, in degrees
4. Longitude- The distance east or west of
the Prime Meridian, in degrees
5. Hemisphere- A half of the earth
6. Parallel- A line of latitude
7. Meridian- A line of longitude
8. Compass rose- A diagram of a compass
rose showing direction
9. Key- The section of a map that explains
the symbols and colors on the map
10.
Equator- The invisible line
separating the earth in half, top and
bottom or N/S
11.
Primer Meridian- The invisible line
separating the earth in half, left and
right or W/E
12.
Intermediate directions- The
direction directly between the cardinal
directions on a compass rose
13.
Relative location- A point or place
in relation to another point or place
14.
Atlas- A book of maps or charts

These vocabulary words help us understand the

key components of a map and the many tools and
parts that make map reading work.
The parts of a map that are most important to read
a map are the key and the compass rose because

Middle Childhood Education

How do these vocabulary words inform our

understanding of reading maps? (Analyze)

if we did not have these tools, it would be

impossible to read and understand the meaning it
was trying to convey.

What parts of a map are the most important

to understand if we want to read a map?
(Apply)
To help everyone get a better understanding
of the essential vocabulary, we are going to
play Geography Bingo as an introduction to
these new concepts.
Everyone will get a bingo card and colored
pencils out. The teacher will begin to read
definitions and students will color in the
vocabulary word they believe it to be align
with and write in the definition with the word.
Once a student gets 3 in a row, they win, but
I will go through the entire list of words so
that every box is full for each student to get
an understanding of which words they
comprehend.

The first definition is the study of earth.

What vocabulary word aligns with that
definition? (Understand) When you find
the correct vocabulary word, color it in
with a colored pencil and write in the
definition to the box. You will do this
with each definition.
The second definition is the directions
north, east, south, and west. What
vocabulary word aligns with that
definition? (Understand)
The third definition is the distance

The boxes will be filled accordingly with the

following definitions:
1. Geography-The study of the earth

2. Cardinal directions- The directions north,

east, south, or west
3. Latitude- The distance north or south of
Earths Equator, in degrees
4. Longitude- The distance east or west of the
Prime Meridian, in degrees
5. Hemisphere- A half of the earth

To transition into the next activity, the

teacher will erase the definitions on the
board, except for cardinal direction, compass
rose, hemisphere, equator, and prime
meridian. These vocabulary words will be
used in the two-page packets they will need
to complete.
The teacher will inform students that a
compass rose is used on a map to indicate
directions, like north, south, east, and west.
Some compass roses are very simple,
indicating a single direction. Others are more
elaborate, indicating as many as 16
directions. When a compass rose indicated
only one direction, it usually points north.
Many compass roses indicate the four
cardinal directions, which are North, South,
East, and West. We use compass roses to
give a sense of direction when driving and
reading a map.

Students will keep their bingo boards on their desk

for reference during the remainder of the class for
reference.

Middle Childhood Education

There will be a compass rose drawn on the

board, similar to this one to give students a
visual.
How many points are there on a traditional
compass rose? (Understand)
What are compass roses used for? (Apply)
Another important part of reading a map is
understand hemispheres. Hemispheres are
halves of the earth, divided by two invisible
lines: the equator and the prime meridian.
The following image will be on the board:

There are 4 points on a traditional compass rose:

north, south, east, and west.
Compass roses are used for giving directions and
help you understand where something is located
on a map or when driving.

Middle Childhood Education

The invisible line that divides the earth in half by

north and south is called the equator.
The invisible line that divides the earth in half by
east and west is called the prime meridian.

As you can see on the map, the earth is

divided two ways.
What is the invisible line that divides the
earth by north and south? (Apply)
What is the invisible line that divides the
earth by east and west? (Apply)
Reading a map is more helpful when we can
read compass roses and understand when
hemisphere is which.
The teacher will then distribute the two
worksheets. The first one on the compass
rose is to be done independently and the
second one on hemispheres is to be done in
their pod groups.

Student will work independently on a compass

rose handout that has them classify what direction
they would have to travel to get from one place to
another or what direction it is in relation to the
second location. Students will work on the
hemisphere worksheet in their pods after
completing the compass rose worksheet.

travel south to get to South America from
North America.
2. Australia is _________ of Africa? (apply)
Australia is East of Africa.
3. Antarctica is __________ of Europe? (apply)

Middle Childhood Education

As students are working, I will be present

around the room engaging in extension
questions to help them apply the knowledge
they have learned and expand their
understanding of these concepts.
What role does the compass rose play in our
society? (Evaluate)
How does the compass rose impact how we

north of the Atlantic Ocean.
6. In order to get to the Indian Ocean, which
direction would you have to travel from the
Atlantic Ocean? (apply) You would have to
travel east to get to the Indian Ocean from
the Atlantic Ocean.
The compass rose plays a large part in society. It
allows bus systems to know which way to travel
and for my parents to know which direction to
drive in when we go to Disneyland.
The compass rose impacts how we read a map by
giving us a sense of direction and being able to
contrast where certain things are located in
relation to other locations.
