Urban Open Spaces: Importance & Impact

Urban open spaces include parks, green spaces, and other open areas that are commonly open to the public for recreation. While urban open spaces may provide active recreation like sports, they also enable passive recreation and a reprieve from the urban environment. Traditional urban public spaces like streets, squares, and parks serve both instrumental functions by facilitating transportation and commerce, as well as expressive functions by enabling social interaction and participation in community life. The provision of public spaces is an important social characteristic of cities as it allows for interaction between strangers, political debate, and psychological growth through diverse contacts.
