INTERCONNECTIONS CHART

Directions: Find 2 connections between the Center for Disease Controls health priority areas and your health fair topic.
Describe how your health fair topic relates to all the health priority areas (two facts for each category).
YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCEBE SPECIFIC (Author, web site address, journal, magazine, etc)

Use the bullets underneath each priority area as subtopics - if you are having difficulty connecting to the
Main Priority Area.

Tobacco use

There are approximately 600 ingredients in

cigarettes. When burned, they create more than
7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals
are known to cause cancer, and many are
poisonous.
Many of these chemicals also are found in
consumer products, but these products have
warning labels. While the public is warned
about the danger of the poisons in these
products, there is no such warning for the toxins
in tobacco smoke.

Some beers contain lactose, wheat and gluten,
corn, food dye, and even peanut ingredients! But
they dont have to be listed, nor is an allergen
disclaimer required. So, essentially, malt
beverages are drink at your own risk, unless
you have the foresight to call the brewery and
get a complete ingredients listing.
Other acceptable ingredients in beer are a
little more damaging to your system than

Research into a group of three-year-olds found

they were more likely to lack concentration, lose
their temper, interrupt others and struggle to get
to sleep when they drank fruit juice dosed with
colorings and preservatives.
The scientists concluded that significant changes
in children's hyperactive behavior could be
produced by removing colorings and additives
from their diet. They added: 'The findings
suggest that benefit would accrue for all children
from such a change - and not just for those
already showing hyperactive behavior or who
are at risk of allergic reactions.'

Aspartame, (E951) more popularly known as
Nutrasweet and Equal, is found in foods labeled
"diet" or "sugar-free". Aspartame is believed to
be carcinogenic and accounts for more reports of
adverse reactions than all other foods and food
additives combined. Aspartame is not your
friend. Aspartame is a neurotoxin and
carcinogen. Known to erode intelligence and
affect short-term memory, the components of
this toxic sweetener may lead to a wide variety
of ailments including brain tumor, diseases like
lymphoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis,
Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, fibromyalgia, and
chronic fatigue, emotional disorders like
depression and anxiety attacks, dizziness,
headaches, nausea, mental confusion, migraines
and seizures.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a
highly-refined artificial sweetener which has
become the number one source of calories in
America. It is found in almost all processed
foods. HFCS packs on the pounds faster than
any other ingredient, increases your LDL
(bad) cholesterol levels, and contributes to the
development of diabetes and tissue damage,
among other harmful effects.

Emulsifiers are used to improve a foods texture
and to prevent mixtures from separating,
particularly in ice cream.Last year, Benoit
Chassaing of Georgia State University showed
that mice that drank water containing one of two
emulsifiers underwent changes in gut bacteria
and inflammation of the gut changes that led
to obesity anddiabetes in these animals.
However, mice that didnt have any gut bacteria
because they had been raised in a sterile
environment didnt become ill when given the

same additives, suggesting that it is the

emulsifiers effect on the microbiome that is to
blame. When the ill mice stopped consuming
emulsifiers, their gut bacteria gradually returned
to normal.

Could Be Linked to Food Additives. New Scientist,

Alginic acid is used as gelling agent to thicken
drinks and foods, salad dressings, soups, jellies,
cheese spreads and dips, ice cream and other
frozen desserts. It is known to cause birth
defects.
According to studies, sodium nitrite/nitrate is
linked to certain kinds of cancer, colon cancer,
especially once the meat has been subjected to
high-temperatures (e.g. barbecuing). Under
certain conditions, sodium nitrite and nitrate
react with amino acids to form cancer-causing
chemicals called nitrosamines. This reaction can
be hindered by the addition of ascorbic acid,
erythorbic acid, or alpha-tocopherol. It has also
been linked to birth defects and childhood
leukemia.
