Kaikoura - A year-round destination

Kaikoura is the most northern
district within the Canterbury
region and is located on the
east coast of the South Island
just 2.5 hours drive north of
Christchurch along the main
highway State Highway 1.
The port of Picton is 2 hours
drive north of Kaikoura where
you can catch the ferry across
to Wellington. Daily scheduled
bus and rail services link
Kaikoura to the rest of the
South Island.

Catch of the day

The Canterbury region is a

truly diverse and spectacular
part of the South Island. Some
of the destinations within the
region are featured in this
guide to help you with your
planning.
Kaikoura has a rich history and
culture. Maori heritage is
reflected in the name
Kaikoura. Tama ki Te Rangi
arrived in the area many
hundreds of years ago and
was tired and hungry. He
found an abundance of
crayfish and named the area
Te Ahi Kaikoura a Tama ki Te
Rangi the fire that cooked
the crayfish of Tama ki Te
Rangi. European history can
be traced back to 1770 when
Captain Cook first mapped the
peninsula. The first shore

whaling station was

established here in 1843. Visit
the museum and historic
buildings or take a Maori
cultural experience.
Kaikouras coastal waters are
home to an amazing array of
marine mammals and birdlife
making it the perfect
destination for marine
experiences all year round.
Perhaps the most famous

residents are the sperm

whales who share this part of
the ocean with dusky dolphins,
fur seals and albatross
amongst others. Migrating
species such as the rare
Hectors dolphins, humpback
whales and orca visit
throughout the year. View
marine life from a boat, plane
or helicopter or get even
closer by swimming with seals
or dolphin. Go fishing and
catch your own dinner. Try out
some of the excellent diving
sites and surf breaks or
explore the coast by kayak.
Kaikoura offers fantastic land
based activities. Go quad
biking, river rafting. Explore
the countryside on horseback,
take an off-road adventure or
visit the farm park. Visit the
winery, stroll through the
lavender farm or treat yourself
at the day spa. If you enjoy
walking, hiking and cycling,
you will find plenty of options
ranging from short strolls to
multi-day hikes and cycle
trails.
Eating in or dining out, you will
be spoiled for choice, whether
its a lazy brunch, a reviving
coffee or a fine dining
experience.

Fresh seafood

Make sure you sample the

delights from Kaikouras ocean
larder fish and seafood
including the local speciality
of crayfish.
With camping grounds, bed
& breakfasts, motels and
apartments as well as
backpackers and luxury
accommodation, you will
find something to suit your
budget.

Alpine Pacific Triangle touring route

Starting with a quick
45-minute drive north of
Christchurch and popular with
international visitors wanting
to experience our wine,
whales and thermal waters,
the 370km Alpine Pacific
Triangle (APT) touring route
showcases a wonderful array
of landscapes and activities
that can be the inspiration for
your wonderful getaway.
The three main points of the
Alpine Pacific Triangle are
Hanmer Springs (New
Zealands alpine spa village),
Waipara (known for award
winning wine experiences) and
Kaikoura (home to an array of
marine life).
Hanmer Springs is set in a high
country basin 385m above sea
level. The alpine environment
encourages nothing but pure
relaxation.

www.kaikoura.co.nz

Waipara boasts amazing

award-winning wines with
Pinot Noir, Riesling,
Chardonnay and Sauvignon
Blanc dominating.
Kaikoura is New Zealands
leading eco-tourism
destination located midway
between Christchurch and
Picton.
The Alpine Pacific Triangle
boasts an abundance of
beaches, forests, parks and
rivers, including more than
274 hectares of recreation
reserves, so it is the perfect
playground for everyone.
There truly is something to
suit every taste and budget.

Kaikoura - a unique environment

When you visit Kaikoura, you
will soon discover why its
3,600 residents are happy to
call this place home and why
over 800,000 people each year
visit this unique part of New
Zealand. Kaikouras marine
residents and other wildlife
also enjoy the lifestyle!
Resident species such as
sperm whales, dusky dolphins
and albatross welcome visitors
throughout the year including
humpback whales, orca and
blue whales. So whatever the
season, there is always
something exciting happening
in the marine world.
Kaikouras unique underwater
environment is the key to
understanding this abundance
of wildlife. A complex marine
environment exists offshore
which has been formed due to
the convergence of two
powerful ocean currents. In
addition, the Kaikoura canyon
drops down to a depth of
almost 2,000m not far from
the shoreline. The
combination of these unusual
features provides the
conditions to sustain a
complex marine food chain
which attracts and feeds so
many different species.

Balancing the needs and

demands of both residents
and such high numbers of
visitors is an ongoing
challenge. Respecting and
caring for Kaikouras cultural
and historical heritage
alongside the natural
environment and its resources
is part of this challenge and
requires a huge commitment
from all of us.
In the next few pages, you will
find out what actions the
Kaikoura community is taking
to ensure well-managed use of
resources. Find out what you
can do to help. Any efforts you
make to reduce your impacts
on the environment (however
small) will make a big
difference.

www.kaikoura.co.nz

Working towards sustainability

What can you do to help?

In the 1990s, Kaikoura District

Council and the community
realised that the growth in
visitor numbers was beginning
to have effects on the natural
environment and on the local
infrastructure, and together
they decided to adopt a
sustainable approach to
growth in the district. A
programme, now known as
Earthcheck Sustainable
Communities, was adopted to
help measure the communitys
environmental impacts.

Working towards a sustainable

future for Kaikoura requires
commitment from both
residents and visitors. Here
are some things you can help
us with:

Under the scheme, a series of

indicators are monitored to
measure environmental
impacts in areas such as air
quality, greenhouse gas
production, water
consumption and energy use.
Careful monitoring, planning
and the introduction of
innovative strategies are used
to reduce environmental
impacts and pressure on
resource use. An independent
audit annually assesses these
measures to ensure that
progress is being made. In
2011 Kaikoura became the

www.kaikoura.co.nz

first destination in the world

to gain an Earthcheck Gold
Community certification due
to its commitment to
community sustainability.
Here are some of the
initiatives the community is
involved in:
Zero Waste: the community is
aiming for zero waste to
landfill by 2015. You can help
by using recycling facilities.
Significant Natural Areas
programme: private
landowners in the district are
encouraged to rejuvenate and
protect areas of native wildlife.
To find out more, take a look
at www.kaikoura.govt.nz

Recycle: Council provides a

weekly recycling collection
service but general rubbish is
not collected. Recycling
facilities may be available
where you are staying. Visit
our Resource Recovery Centre
where you can recycle all
plastics, paper, tin, aluminium
and glass as well as dispose of
diapers. When you are out and
about, use the public recycling
bins located throughout the
town. Check the town map for
locations.
Keep the coast clean and
respect the ocean: do not
leave litter of any sort. Use the
public toilets. Follow fishing
quotas and size limits. Keep
your distance from marine
mammals and remember they
are wild animals not pets.

contribution to the
environment (page 24).
Use less fuel: explore
Kaikoura on foot or hire a
bicycle. Slow down, take your
time and enjoy the fresh air
and spectacular views.
Support local businesses:
shop locally and support our
small businesses. Try and buy
local and seasonal produce.
Conserve resources: e.g. use
water sparingly, turn off lights
when not required
Select environmental
products: support suppliers
that use less packaging and
offer biodegradable
alternatives. Say no to plastic
and buy one of our eco bags
(below).

Support Trees for Travellers:

purchase a native tree which
will be planted in Kaikoura as
a lasting memento of your visit
and will make a positive
