DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY TROUBLESHOOTING
Blooming: When overexposed areas of a scene overflow into the edges of other
objects. Blooming can also increase purple fringing.
Clogged Printer Nozzle: Spraying or dotting such as youd see from a clogged air brush
as the ink is unevenly applied, or lines running through the print.
Aliasing: Aliasing refers to an effect that causes different signals to become
indistinguishable. Certain patterns/objects can become indistinguishable with each other
when an image is scanned, displayed, or printed in different resolutions from the original.
(in essence, edge or detail issues due to improper processing of an image in a resolution
less than the original). Aliasing can be recognized by identifying sharp and jagged edges
or the existence of artifacts that show detail or abnormalities that dont exist in the
original scene.
JPEG Artifacts: Pixilation issues caused by compression. JPEG images compress, or
throw out, data every time they are opened or edited and pixilation can result.
Heres a photo of a flower compressed with successively more lossy compression ratios
from left to right.
Newtons Rings: The phenomenon of Newton's rings named after Isaac Newton, is an
interference pattern caused by the reflection of light between two surfaces - a spherical
surface and an adjacent flat surface.
Newtons Rings appearing on a photograph:
Noise is represented by inaccurate imaging in the form of graininess or other
abnormalities that effect most of an image such as random variation of brightness or color
information. Noise is often caused by lack of light or just poor quality image
sensors.
Improper White Balance can be recognized by identifying the miscoloring of scenes.
Often the scene will take on a yellowish or bluish tint (color shift) over everything due to
different types of lighting.
Posterization (or Banding): Decreasing or limiting the amount of shades/colors
represented in a print. It reduces shading, forcing certain shades to be shown equal to
other shades that were not equal in the original image and detail. This causes loss of
detail and a banding effect. Posterization can occur intentionally using a photoshop
filter or unintentionally by overusing editing tools such as levels or curves.
Sharpening is usually done using the Unsharp Mask tool in photoshop. This
technique emphasizes object and detail edges in an image to make it appear more in
focus. Oversharpening leads to pixilation and/or unwanted noise in an image and
Halo artifacts along edges.
