Dance Sport

Dancesport, or competitive ballroom dancing, includes two categories - Latin and Standard dances. The Latin dances include samba, cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive which originate from Latin American and American cultures and are characterized by expressiveness, intensity, and energy. The Standard dances include waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, slow foxtrot, and quickstep which are more formal. Competitions divide dancers into amateur and professional levels with various age categories. The first unofficial world championship was in 1909 and dancesport gradually emerged as an organized sport in the 1920s and was first broadcast on TV in 1960 with the ultimate goal of inclusion in the Olympic Games

Dancesport presentation

1.The term Dancesport or competitive ballroom dancing applies in the first

place to the International Style, but it also refers to the American Style.
The International Style, which is more wide-spread in Europe, includes two
categories: Latin and Standard.
2.The five Latin dances are the Samba, Chacha, Rumba, Paso doble and
Jive. These dances originate from Latin American (Samba, Chacha,
Rumba), Spanish (Paso Doble) and American (Jive) cultures, so they have
their distinguishing traits but coincide in expressiveness, intensity and
energy. These are the ones danced in short costumes, ladies wearing as
many rhinestones as possible, but mens shirts are often decorated too.
3.The five Standard dances include the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow
Foxtrot and Quickstep. These are more formal than their Latin
counterparts, they are generally danced in a closed position of the
partners. Standard dancers costumes are usually very long decorated
with feathers, stones, and men wearing smoking.
4.Competitions
Dancesport competitors are divided into two major divisions: amateurs
and professionals, the amateur one having six levels ranging from E to A
and S which is the highest level. Amateur dancers are also separated in
age categories: Juveniles I and II, Junior I and II, Youth, Adults and Seniors I,
II and III.
5.At competitions dancers usually proceed through more heats to semifinals and finals.
Besides solo couples, there are also formation teams who also take part in
competitions.
6.How It All Started
The first unofficial world championship took place in 1909, then
throughout the 1920s, several European nations were the pioneers in the
gradual emergence of the dance as organized sport. They defined the
norms and launched the concept of its worldwide governance. In 1929,
British dance teachers defined the standards for an English Style that
was soon adopted everywhere. The first formation team was presented in
1932 in London, and dancesport was first broadcast on TV in 1960.
7.Even though, Dancesport recently became a part of the International
World Games, the ultimate goal of the WDSF is the inclusion into the
Olympic Games.
8.Types of Competitions
Besides the national, regional, European, and world championships, there
are some extremely important competitions that all couples want to take
part in. One of them is the German Open Championship organized in
Stuttgart in the summer. Another one would be the Blackpool Dance
Festival in England. Winning the Blackpool competition can be the highest
achievement in an athletes career. World opens, international opens,
world cups and grand prixs are also important.
9.Dance in my life

I started dancing at the age of 8, in a solo girls group. Then I decided to

start dancing with a partner, who was kos. In the first picture, you can
see our first performance. It was quite funny and exciting at the same
time: my shoe flew off my foot, and I had to put it on again and continue
dancing. This is one the best stories I have about dancing. The other two
pictures show our present, the second competition we took part in last
year.
