Betsy Sluhan is the Administrator of

Teal Lake Assisted Living in Mexico.
Summer is a great time of year for
outdoor activities and fun, but the sun
and heat can be dangerous. Each year,
about 400 Americans die from heat
waves, according to the Center for Disease Control. The early summer is especially dangerous for the elderly and
chronically ill.
According to a recent study from
Harvard University, variation in temperatures can pose health risks for the
elderly. In the warmer seasons, temperatures can vary a lot in a 24-hour
period. Even a temperature increase
by less than 2 degrees Fahrenheit can
incerease a senior's risk of death by as
much as 4%.
The severity of the risk varies depending on the senior's health conditions. The Harvard study found that

seniors suffering from heart disease, heart

failure, diabeetes and chornic lung disease
were more susceptible to these changes in
tempearture.
"Older people and those with chronic
health conditions have a harder time thermo-regulating and acclimating to heat,"
says Antonella Zanobetti, Ph.D, a senior
research scientist for the Harvard School of
Public Health and co-author of the study.
Prior research has focused on the shortterm effects of heat waves, but this is the
first study to connect long-term mortality
and temperature variations. As this summer continues, we should prepare for the
heat. This doesn't mean that seniors and
their caregivers have to hide out in their
homes to avoid the heat though. It simply
means that they should be more careful in
planning any outdoor activities.
If you want to sit outside or go for a
walk with your senior, suggest they wear
breathable, lightweight clothes and a hat to
block the sun. Plenty of water is another
important thing to have with you. It's also
always a good idea to stay under trees so
you can be in the shade where it is cooler.
Besides just being under trees, according to
the Harvard study, it's a good to be around
plant life in general because people in areas
surrounded by plants were less affected by
temperature changes.
