Euralille: Lille's Urban Transformation

The Euralille masterplan in Lille, France was commissioned in 1989 and completed in 1994. It was designed by OMA to revitalize the city in response to economic decline by capitalizing on its new strategic position at the intersection of major transportation routes following the opening of a high-speed TGV train line connecting Paris and London. The massive 800,000 square meter development includes a new TGV train station, offices, shops, apartments, hotels, an exposition center and parking in addition to rerouting a highway underground and connecting the new and old train stations with a large multi-level parking garage.

Project Overview

IMPETUS
The tunnel between france and england puts lille, a
once important coal mining and textile town, on the map.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
1960s and 70s:the Beginning of high unemployment due
to decline of the coal, mining and textile industries.
1980s: turn towards the service sector.
1983: the VAL, the worlds first automated rapid transit underground network opens
1993: high-speed TGV train line opened, connecting
Paris with Lille in one hour.
1994: the opening of the Channel Tunnel and the arrival of the Eurostar train, puts Lille in the centre of
a triangle connecting Paris, London, and Brussels.
