ESS1 The Earth and Earth materials, as we know them today, have developed over long
periods of time, through constant change processes.
6. ROCK CYCLE
S:ESS1:2:6.1 Explain that large rocks can be broken down into smaller rocks.
Objective(s):
1) Students will be able read articles for information and answer the questions that
accompany them.
Resources/Materials List:
Rock Reference Booklet pages
Rock Cycle Song Chart
Glue sticks
Pencil
Booklet cover
Procedure:
Gather students on large rug
Display song chart
Sing song with students
Show students materials for Rock Reference Booklet
Students create booklet at their tables
Plans for differentiation:
Some of the lower level readers will need help reading the sentences about rocks.
We could have the students put the booklet together and save the reading and gluing on
sentence strips until the very end and do as a large group with the doc. camera.

There is one student with an IEP and I know that she gets frustrated easily with
writing and reading, she may be one of the students I need to give support to when she
is reading.
She may also need support matching the sentence strips to the correct booklet page
Whats next?
The students will be continuing on their exploration of the three types of rocks and
the rock cycle in the next lesson.
