There were many different wars between the Roman Republic and Carthigians (punic)
Empire. They all happened between 218-201 BCE. They were once great allies. What
happened? That what we are here to find out.
In 246 BC, Rome decided to intervene in a conflict on the Western Coast of Sicily.
Carthage was then involved in an attack between Syracuse and Messina. Carthage supported
Syracuse and Rome supported Messina, they soon started to fight each other. Sicilys control
during this was at stake. Over 20 years Rome rebuilt complete fleet so it could face Carthages
navy . They did and the win overpowered their loss from that same year. That loss against Rome
was where Carthage lost its superiority. Rome gained Sicily after the First Punic War, Sicily
became its first Oversea Province.
Romans in the years after the First Punic War, Rome became the leading maritime power.
They also took Corsica and Sardinia from Carthage. They then made Carthigians pay greater
indeminity than the exacted than the exacted payment. Then followed the Second Punic War.
Under the leadership of Hamilicar Barca, his son Hannibal, and Barcas son-in-law Hasdrubal,
Carthage had acquired a new base in Spain. This helped start the Second Punic War. When
Hannibal was just a young boy, is father made him take a blood oath against Rome. When
Hasdrubal died in 221 BC Hannibal took command of the forces in Spain. After two years
Hannibal marched his troops across the Ebro River, into Saguntam. Saguntam is Roman territory
so this meant that he declared war on Rome. Hannibal had 90,000 infantry, 12,000 cavalry, he
also had a lot of elephants. The elephants were use to cross the Alps. After crossing the Alps
Carthage defeated a couple of victories on Roman territories. Three of the territories were
Ticinus, Trebia, and Trasimene. Hannibals actions really took a toll in Cannae 216 BC. Hannibal
took his cavalry and surrounded the Roman army that was twice the size of Hannibals. After the
defeat, Romans came back and took Italy and Spain from the Carthagians. General Publius
Cornelius Scipio (young) won all this for Rome. Carthage went to protect North Africa, the only
place they had control of. Carthage did end up losing the Second Punic War.
During the third Punic War there were efforts of Cato the elder and other hawkish
members of the Roman Senate convinced everyone that the Carthagians were a continuous
threat. It jeapordized the fate of the Roman Supremacy. In 149 BC Rome sent troops to North
Africa, this started the Third Punic War. Carthage had broken the treaty between Rome and
Carthage since they declared war on Numidia, so Rome didnt care about just going right in to
North Africa. Carthage held Rome out of North Africa for two years, until Rome switched their
army commander to General Scipio Aemilianus, he was in charge of the North African
campaign. In 147 BC, once he adjusted some things and then they forced an attack on the Harbor
side. They got into the city they destroyed everything in their way, they were on their way to
Citadel. After only a week of the Romans slaughtering Carhagians they finally gave up and their
700 year old city was destroyed. 50,000 Carthagians were sold into slavery.
Carthagians lost every war. They may have won some battles, but the never
actually came out on top in the end. But I think Rome at the end got out of hand, they just
started slaughtering innocent Carthigians so that they could presume power. That is a very good
example of our generation. We will so anything to come out on top.
