A Proposal For Overhead Tank Water Level Indication System by Vignesh R Thane 20-08-2016

This document proposes an overhead tank water level indication system using ultrasonic sensors, Arduino microcontrollers, and a wireless LCD display. The system aims to eliminate the need for a watchman to check water levels manually, preventing security issues and water wastage. It will be implemented in three modules over 30 days for Rs. 10,000: a sensor and transmitter, wireless communication, and receiver display. The system will continuously monitor and remotely display water levels, and trigger alarms to prevent shortages or overflows.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Title: Overhead Tank Water Level Indication System

Duration of project: 30 days

Cost Estimate: Rs 10000/-
This system offers accurate water level indication using
ultrasonic level sensors, Arduino microcontrollers and
wireless display on a remote LCD Screen.

3
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The watchman of a housing complex has to abandon his

position at the security cabin and check the water level from
time to time to decide the appropriate time to switch on the
water pump.
This practice endangers security of the building
inmates.
Overhead tank is opened and closed repeatedly,
wearing off the lid and allowing pollutants to enter
drinking water.
This practice causes wastage of water.
This might cause artificial scarcity as the local
municipality provides water only for a limited period.

4
OBJECTIVES
To eliminate need for watchman to leave security cabin
thus enhancing building security
Provide continuous real time accurate monitoring of
water level with alarms for preventing wastage
Ensure continued potable water supply to households

5
TECHNICAL PLAN
The entire project is divided into 3 modules:
1. The sensor and transmitter module
2. Wireless communication module
3. The receiver LCD display module

6
Sensor and Transmitter module:
Components :
Ultrasonic sensors

Arduino microcontroller

Power supply of 5V DC(To be obtained using a power adapter)

Cables

Working:
Ultrasonic sensors mounted inside water tank sense the water level by
reflecting the high frequency waves off the water surface. The distance
is processed by microcontroller and transmitted to the communication
module by the cables as a digital signal.

7
Wireless Communication module:

Components:
Wifi Transceivers

LAN Server

LAN Router

Power Supply

Working:
The wifi transceivers communicate the received values to the LCD
Display module through a wireless Local Area Network. Wifi connectivity is
used as it works even in inclement weather conditions.

8
Receiver LCD Display Module:
Components:
Arduino microcontroller

LCD display unit

Cables

Alarm

Power supply

Working:
The receiver unit receives the digital data from communication module
and converts it to level measurement value in centimetres in the
microcontroller. This value is displayed in the LCD unit. When the water level
increases beyond a threshold, an alarm warns the watchman to switch off the
pump .If the level falls to zero, the alarm again buzzes to inform the watchman
to switch on the pump.

9
MANAGEMENT PLAN
The company plans to execute the project in five phases.

Sensor and Transmitter Calibration and Installation

o Duration: 3 days

o Day 1:Procurement of components

o Day 2:Testing of procured components and

assembly(including mounting of sensors in tank)

o Day 3:Calibration of sensors, programming of

microcontrollers and installation at site

Wireless Communication Installation

o Duration: 3 days

o Day 4:Procurement and testing of components

o Day 5:Wiring of Transmitter and Receiver units

o Day 6:Signal testing

Receiver LCD Display Installation

o Duration: 2 days

o Day 7: Procurement and testing of components

o Day 8: Installation at watchman's cabin

Testing of entire project

o Duration: 7 days

o Day 9,10:Basic test of calibration

10
o Day 11,12: Troubleshooting

o Day 13,14,15: Inclement condition tests for robustness

o Day 16-30:Commissioning

Conclusion
This project aims to achieve its objectives at the lowest
possible cost. As the involved principles are not complex and
the components are standard as well as inexpensive, the
project can be assured of low cost maintenance and
servicing.
