THE 5 MOST SPOKEN LANGUAGES IN THE WORLD
1. CHINESE MANDARIN
The term "mandarin" arose from the commercial relations between
Portuguese and Chinese in the early seventeenth century. Luso traders
came to Chinese cities in search of tea, silk and other exotic goods, and
dealt with Chinese officials from the Chinese imperial government. Their
subordinates were prohibited from contacting outsiders, so the trade was
conducted only with these officials, and so the language used by these
officials who were in charge was known as "mandarin" (in Portuguese
"mandarin") in the West. Another widely used version for the origin of the
term is that it would have its origin in the Hindi word "mantri", meaning
"counselor", "minister of state", then going to the Malay "mantri" and
then to the Portuguese "Mandarin" From Portuguese, was assimilated by
other European languages, including English, where the record of the first
use of the word "mandarin" dates from 1589.
The Chinese language is the most widely spoken language in the world,
with more than 900 million people (one-fifth of the world's population)
who speak it as their mother tongue. It is spoken in China, Taiwan,
Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
The Chinese language family consists of several dialects, traditionally
classified into 7 groups: dialects of the north, Wu dialects, Xiang dialects,
Gan dialects, kejia or hakka dialects, Min dialects and Yue dialects.
Mandarin Chinese is one of the northern dialects (the one spoken in
Beijing, the capital), and it is the language we know as the Chinese
language, since it is official throughout the country.
Due to the economic importance of China today, and to the projections of
the importance it will have in the future, the demand to learn Mandarin
Chinese is increasing.

ENGLISH
English is descended from the language spoken by the Germanic tribes
who migrated from the coasts of the North Sea, in what is now the
Netherlands, northern Germany (and part of Denmark), to the British Isles
- a territory of the same Extension of what would eventually be termed
England (Englaland 'land of Angles'). Among the tribes that migrated,
there were contingents of Anglos, Frisians, Juts, and Saxons. Its language
is called Anglo-Saxon.
According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, around 449, Vortigern, king of
the British Isles, extended an invitation to Angles led by Hengest and
Horsa to help him against the Picts. In return, the Anglo-Saxons would be
granted land in the southeast. More help was sought, and Anglo, Saxon,
and Jute responded. The chronicle documents the subsequent arrival of
"settlers", who eventually formed seven kingdoms: Northumbria, Mercia,
East Anglia, Kent, Essex, Sussex and Wessex. However, in the opinion of
most modern scholars, this Anglo Saxon history is legendary and
politically motivated.
English is a Germanic language of the Indo-European family. Today it is
the second most spoken language in the world, after Chinese, with 508
million more people using it officially. English, although not the first
language in number of users, is the most widespread in the world, and is
on its way to become the universal language.
English is of an extraordinary linguistic richness, which owes its origins to
the diversity of influences it has assimilated. And that is why, throughout
history, this language has adopted words from others; Mainly Anglo-
4
Saxon, but also Latin, Old Norse and French, and even other languages
such as Greek, Spanish, etc.
3. ESPANISH
The history of the Spanish language usually goes back to the preRoman
period, since it is possible that the prerroman languages of the peninsula
exerted influence in the Hispanic Latin that would confer to the Romance
peninsular languages several of its characteristics. The history of Spanish
is usually divided conventionally into three periods: medieval Spanish,
Middle Spanish and modern Spanish.
Spanish or Castilian is a Romance language, derived from vulgar Latin,
that belongs to the subfamily itlica within the indoeuropeo set. It is the
main language in Spain and 20 American countries, and is also official in
Equatorial Guinea. It is also called Castilian, having its origin in the
medieval kingdom of Castile.
Spanish is a Romance language of the Iberian group. It is one of the six
official languages of the UN and one of the most spoken of the planet,
only surpassed by Chinese and English. It employs about 560 million
people and more than 400 million use it as a native language.
Mexico is the country with the most Spanish speakers, followed by the
United States, where it is not an official language but is growing more and
more. Colombia, Spain and Argentina complete the list of countries with
more Spanish speakers.

4. HINDI
It is closely related to Urdu (official language of the Islamic Republic of
Pakistan). Both are mutually intelligible, being from a linguistic point of
view varieties of the same language (Hindustan language, which counted
thus would be the second most spoken language behind Chinese
Mandarin and ahead of Spanish). Its differences are mainly reduced to the
writing system, which in the case of Hindi is the devnagari alphabet,
while Urdu uses a form of the Arabic alphabet. These two languages also
differ in their cultivated terminology, which Hindi generally takes from
Sanskrit (the process of "sanscritizar"). In this way, a process of
eradication of the Persian-Arabic terminology of Hindi was started, in
order to dissociate it politically from Urdu, while in Urdu the cultures are
mostly of Perso-Arab origin. In the familiar language spoken daily by most
speakers, Hindi and Urdu are more similar than in more cultured forms.
5. RUSSIAN
The Russian language is a Slavic language whose origins go back over
1000 years ago. The sixth century AD saw the migration of the Slavic
peoples of the territory that today occupies Poland. The Slavs expanded
westward to the Elbe River and south to the Adriatic Sea, where they
gradually occupied much of what is now the Balkans. By the tenth
century, three groups of Slavic languages had emerged: Western,
Southern and Eastern. Eastern Slavic gave rise to modern languages
known as Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian.
Slavic languages retain many characteristics in common, especially in
grammatical structure, therefore, independent groups were able to use a
common written language. This language is known as the Old Slavic or
Old Church Slavic (the language is used in its written form only).
The Russian is spoken by more than 200 million people, many of them are
monolingual; That is, they only speak Russian. Russian is spoken
7
throughout the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Belarus and other republics
former members of the USSR.
The Russian language is really difficult, in addition to having another type
of alphabet, there are a lot of unusual and strange sounds. Also their
grammar is very complicated and different compared to other languages
such as English or Spanish.
The Russian alphabet is based on the Cyrillic alphabet and consists of 33
letters: 21 consonants, 10 vowels, and two letters without sound
