 PREFACE TO THE FOURTH EDITION

This edition has been long overdue, but the delay; .is not
totally devoid of an advantage. During the last four years, Ihav
been teaching this subject in the Law College of the Osmania
University and in some private Law Colleges. This attempt to
make the law clear to the L.L.B. students has helped me to
clarify certain portions of the book, by explanations and
examples. I have tried to make the subject as lucid as possible.
If I have failed, I will only be too grateful to any lecturer on the
subject, for making suggestions for improvement. The case-law
has been brought up to December 1999 (Supreme Court
decisions), and therefore, the book should be of some use to the
practitioners also.

 PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

There is a story that F.E. Smith missed the highest place in

the final law examination, because he got the Rule in Shelley's
case wrong and that on the day the results were announced he
swore: 'When I become the Lord Chancellor of England, I shall
abrogate this stupid rule'. Twenty years after, he did become the
Lord Chancellor of England, as the Earl of Birkenhead, and, in
the Law of Property Act, 1925of which he was the architect
he did get rid of the rule in Shelley's case. If one may compare
the great with the small, when I was studying for the B.L.
degree examination I found many Sections of the Transfer of
Property Act quite intractable and it was one of my ambitions to
write a book which would throw light into its obscure corners.
But whether I have, in this book, succeeded in illuminating the
various areas of darkness will be for the discriminating reader to
judge.
