Section VII

The document outlines goals and objectives for planning the future of a school library. The first goal is to create new physical spaces in the library to encourage learning and collaboration. Objectives include rearranging furniture to make flexible spaces for different learning needs and enhancing technology use. The second goal is to promote communication about library resources. Objectives are forming a committee to discuss resources and safety procedures, and presenting new resources at faculty meetings. The third goal is to conduct research projects with each grade. Objectives involve monthly makerspace projects, using new technologies, and collaborating with teachers from different grades each year.

on rubrics. The MS will collect the
data and share with administration for
future goals.
The first goal, create physical spaces in the library that encourage learning and collaboration was
created to remedy the problems mentioned in section IV. The Ebenezer Elementary library is not a welcoming
place that is conducive to learning and therefore needs to be overhauled. According to Sullivan every school
library needs a flexible learning space that that supports multiple learning and teaching styles (Sullivan, 2011).
EESs library had several spaces but none were flexible and they did not accommodate learning. The library
has to provide a space for information seeking, collaborating, and communicating, as well as reading and
browsing, and use of multi-media formats (AASL, 2009). By rearranging tables, shelves, media equipment,
and more many smaller flexible spaces can be created for use by individuals, groups, or whole classes.
Rearranging the computers to make them more easily accessible will encourage the use of technology as will
allowing staff and students to checkout and use laptops/tablets from the carts that are already available in the
library. Creating a kid friendly labeling system will allow all students to be able to browse and find what they
are looking for with little help freeing up the media specialist for other tasks.

Our second long-term goal is to promote communication between the media specialist and other
stakeholders about the resources available in the media center. To achieve this goal, the media specialist will
create a committee of stakeholders to garnish regular feedback, design lesson plans for students on the safe and
responsible use of the resources, and conduct monthly sessions with the entire staff about available resources.
This goal will help our media center move towards achieving our mission statement, which is to provide a
facility and program that will empower the learner with the ability to access and process information and ideas,
and support the educational strategies of the school community (Library/Media Center, 2013). According to
The Indispensable Librarian, schools should be taking a proactive approach to dealing with ethical issues
surrounding technology use (Johnson, 2013). This goal will help the media specialist introduce new
technology and provide students with lessons to stay safe, legal, and responsible while using the technology.

The third long-term goal is to provide students with an opportunity to complete short research projects
based on the curriculum. This goal will reach across the grade levels to encourage students to use research to
further their understanding of the curriculum. The Media Specialist will work with teachers to provide quality
instruction about online research. After the projects are complete, the Media Specialist will display the projects
and the rubric used to evaluate them. At the end of the year, students would complete a survey to provide
feedback on the research process. This data will be used to formulate new short-term goals in order to achieve
the long-term goals.
