In these days of do-everything-fast, how

about doing nothing?
Now that is a lost art. It takes a certain degree of dignified slack to do nothing
right. You have to mean your inaction and take much pleasure from it. You
have to be daring enough to stretch time for as long as you can hold it, and fast
enough to beat it when it catches up on you and whatever it is that you still
have yet to do. In all these, you keep that brash confidence that you will get
things done anywaybut later.
This is how the King of Nothing rules.
I dwell on this because summer has indeed kicked in and Im one of those
who believe that summers are best spent enjoying doing nothing. I dont think
there are many of us left; everyone else is spending summer in a flurry of
every conceivable activity. What FHMers

Math music is a pretty niche genre even for self-proclaimed hipsters of

the music scene. Who could blame them though? Bad math music sounds
like pa-bida band members trying to out-riff one another, but good math
music can mesmerize you into a trance-like state where you cant stop
listening. Needless to say, a lot of technical stuff goes into playing this
genre of music with all of the things happening all at once, a point of
focus is essential to bring the whole performance together, and thats
where these women two come in.
Isabelle Romualdez from Fools and Foes and Dee Cruz from Run
Dorothy have gathered quite a respectable following in the OPM scene
with their unique sound and undeniable appeal. But what exactly draws
people to these two women apart from their beauty and talent? Lets find

better at singing. They
said that our band sounded

like Elena Tonra from
Daughter. That particular

because I felt that it was
actually true. It made me
want to find my own voice.

out with its first album called Ibang Planeta, and its
safe to say that this isnt just like any other album by a
newly formed band. While younger bands might have
arguably fresher sounding songs, Kontra, while still
experimenting with the songs they want to produce,
has undoubtedly developed its own distinct sound. A
heavy atmosphere persists throughout the album that is
reminiscent of grunge and post-grunge rock youd hear
from foreign bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and
Alice in Chains, especially when listening to their songs
that are written in English like Feel So and Return.
Their Filipino songs however have a different feel
COSMIC to them but are able to still somehow retain the albums

Were no strangers to comic books migrating over to television; so Archie adaptation WORDS
Riverdale was a sure sell. But fans of the familiar and wholesome comics mythology had to Anne MARi ROnquillO
adjust their expectations to coalesce with the new Riverdale reality, as if adjusting the control
track on a VCR. The new teen drama is doused in millennial-flavored dressings, not shying
away from its promise of a darker and sexier take on the beloved comic.
The jump off point is a murder mystery, ways away from the framework of an
all-American teenage life that made the Archie Comics popular. The TV drama still relies on
most of the foundations built by the Archie universe, so you can be sure that Reggie Mantle is
still a jerk. But, egad! Things sure are different.
The town of Riverdale is Pleasantville in full color. These days, teenagers dont just sit
down, drink milkshakes, and worry about whos taking whom to the dance. Every other family
in Riverdale seems to be dysfunctional, each one harboring dark secrets that slowly unfold to
move the plot along. The Archie series has long capitalized on a clean and harmless bag of
tricks that get readers chuckling, but square characters are just unappealing.
The representation in the show would make Donald Trump squirm. Veronica is Latina,
while Josie of the Pussycats is African-American. Archie himself is played by Pacific Islander
KJ Apa. Riverdale remodeled character archetypes to speak to todays diverse audience, and
Luke Perrys Fred Andrews is testament that this indeed is a new generation of teen TV.
As for Riverdale being the live-action Archie fans have long waited for, its too soon to
say. The show is driven by its own strong millennial ethos that the comic characters seem like
mere templates. It will likely take on a life of its own, making nods here and there to its comic
origins as it plays on this generations truths and fantasies.

it a more palpable feeling; kind of like gut

Weve always scoffed at the fact that one
of our more sheltered staff members,

agree that driving in Manila is horrible

to an angry inner motorist side of
him that we had never seen before.

Weve hiked a few good mountains in our day thanks to all the media outings weve attended so you could say out of all the activities at
the adventure hub, this was probably the one we were most comfortable with or so we thought. It sounded pretty easy when the guide
explained it at the start of the event, a 250-meter trek to the first checkpoint then an easy 100-meter climb on a Via Ferrata, which is
essentially a mountain face with man-made metal handles to help beginners with gripping the rocks properly, then finally a quick zipline
down the side of the mountain so you dont even need to climb back down, which seemed like a pretty sweet deal, that is, until we were
actually scaling up the mountain.
Never have we questioned the life decisions weve made as much as those very long minutes of hanging on for dear life on those
thankfully sturdy handles. The worst part is it wasnt really that hard to climb physically but damn, were we shaking in our harnesses. We
dont know if it was because of a lack of pampatigas ng tuhod or the beautiful view of imminent death we saw when we accidentally and
regretfully looked down. Honestly, that was without question, the scariest moment of our lives.
