Administration Still 1
Travel
The SMSU Womens Tennis team travels within the months of January through April of every
year due to our in-season conference matches. Considering the fact that we do not have the
proper facilities to host a home match, we have to travel to every match. Although we do not
host matches on the campus of SMSU, we do host one match every year at Huether Family
Match Pointe, which is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Below is a representation of our
upcoming 2017 schedule:
Date Opponent Home team Location
02/04/2017 Mcalester/Hamline TBD TBD
02/10-12/2017 Augie/Sioux Falls Augie Sioux Falls, SD
02/17-19/2017 UIU/Winona Winona Winona, MN
02/24-26/2017 Mary/Moorhead SMSU Sioux Falls, SD

03/31-04/02/2017 UMD/St. Cloud Mankato St. Peter, MN
04/07-09/2017 Bemidji/Crookston Crookston Crookston, MN
The SMSU Womens Tennis team travels to every match in a twelve passenger van. This van is
able to accommodate all of the athletes, as well as both the head and assistant coach. During the
2017 season, we will only have to stay in a hotel twice for when we travel to Winona and
Crookston. Due to the rest of the matches being within a three hour drive, we will leave and
return on the day of the match.
Spring Break
Every year, the SMSU Womens Tennis team takes a Spring Break trip down to Orlando, Florida
for one week in the month of March. During this time period, the athletes will play a total of six
matches, while also having free time to participate in fun team activities such as going to the
Administration Still 2
beach and Universal Studios. We normally fly out of Minneapolis (MSP) and arrive into
Orlando (MCO). While we are down in Orlando, the coaching staff and the athletes all stay in a
seven bedroom house that is rented out for the week. We fundraise for this event all year, so
most of the funds for this trip are paid off, but each athlete is still required to pay for their plane
ticket. This trip is always a great team bonding experience and a great getaway from the cold
Minnesota weather.
Equipment and Facilities
All of the athletes on the SMSU Womens Tennis team are required to supply their own rackets
and tennis shoes. The tennis program provides everything else including string, tennis balls, and
uniforms. All of our equipment is located in a shed in the RA facility on SMSUs campus and
every tennis athlete is expected to help with the proper set-up and clean-up of the equipment for
every practice.
There are two all sport courts located in the RA facility on SMSUs campus which is where the
SMSU Womens Tennis team hosts their in-season practices. Since the tennis nets are not up all
year around, the athletes are expected to help put the nets up five minutes prior to practice, as
well as take them down immediately after practice. After all of our practices, custodians
normally clean and sweep the courts which helps keep them very clean. We, as coaches and
athletes, very much appreciate all that the custodians do to help keep our facilities clean.
Expectations of Assistant Coach and Athletic Trainers
Assistant Coach
Administration Still 3
I am currently the assistant coach for the SMSU Womens Tennis Program and I have many
responsibilities and expectations that are required. Listed below are many of the responsibilities
that I have as an assistant coach, as well as what I would expect from and assistant coach if I was
a head coach of a tennis program:
Assists the head coach in managing and directing the tennis program.
Assists the head coach with all aspects of the team including training, competing and
scheduling.
Coordinates travel arrangements.
Assists with all aspects of recruiting including calling prospective student-athletes and
attending USTA and high school tournaments while adhering to NCAA Division II
recruiting guidelines.
Organizes and completes required paperwork including but not limited to Compliance
forms such as weekly time logs.
Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletic department, attends department
meetings and activities, and always represents the University positively when interacting.
Preforms and completes other assigned administrative duties
Athletic Trainers
Although I am the current assistant coach for the SMSU Womens Tennis team, I also received
my undergraduate degree in Athletic Training. Therefore, I get to help out with a majority of our
athletes when they get injured. The tennis team at SMSU has an extremely small roster, so
luckily we do not have many people that are in and out of the training room, nor do we have
many expectations of the SMSU athletic trainers. The only time we absolutely need help from

one of the SMSU athletic trainers is when we host our home match in Sioux Falls, South
Dakota, which we are then required to have an athletic trainer present.
Policies and Procedures for Injuries
When an SMSU Womens Tennis athlete gets injured, the coaching staff (Adam or myself) will
send the athlete to the training room to be evaluated by the athletic trainers. Once the athlete is
in the hands of the athletic training staff, they take control and help get the injured athlete back to
feeling better. Due to this, we do not have an injury form that we have to fill out for the injured
athlete and it is left up to the athletic training staff.
Promoting the SMSU Womens Tennis Team
The SMSU Womens Tennis team takes part in many fundraisers which help promote the team.
Below is a list of fundraisers that the tennis team takes part in throughout each school year, a
description of exactly what the fundraiser is and how it helps promote the team:
Selling ButterBraids the tennis team sells ButterBraids every year which helps raise
money for the Spring Break Trip. The athletes go around selling ButterBraid pastries for
$12 a pastry and in return the teams receives a $5 profit for each one sold. The SMSU
tennis team is known for selling ButterBraids around the holiday season, so it helps
promote the team.
Selling SMSU Womens Tennis Apparel the tennis team orders a new t-shirt design
every year, which is then sold to parents, professors, and students on campus. Having the
SMSU Womens Tennis logo on the t-shirt allows for a great promotion strategy.
SMSU Workathon the tennis team, along with all the other athletic teams on SMSUs
campus take part in the Workathon every year. All of the athletes are assigned to rake

leaves in the yards of elderly and/or disabled people who are unable to do so. By taking
part in this, it helps promote the tennis team and show that the athletes are willing to help
out around the community.
Athletic Concessions the tennis team helps out with SMSUs football and basketball
concessions every year which is another way that helps fundraise for the Spring Break
trip. By having the tennis athletes present at all of the athletic events, it helps promote
the tennis team and also helps in showing support for their fellow student-athletes.
