Ks Inquiry Project Final

Kelsey Siegfried conducted a project to create an effective classroom library for her future third grade students. She observed her mentor teacher's classroom library which was highly utilized by students. This led her to question how to arrange her own library to intrigue students. To answer this, she collected data by having current third graders list their favorite books. From this, she created a book list with a variety of genres and reading levels to match students' interests. Her goal is for the library to foster literacy development and a love of reading.

Inquiry Project: Creating A Classroom Library

Kelsey Siegfried
EDTP 320
Introduction
As a future classroom educator, I have often wondered how teachers build and organize their classroom libraries
in hopes of promoting and fostering a love for literacy and its development. From past semesters spent observing as a
University of Louisville preservice teacher, I have found that many children do not use their classroom library as a
resource. However, this semester, my placement seemed to have a turn of events. I had observed that my mentor teachers
classroom library was actually a utilized space and was filled with books in which the young children were interested in!
These young third grade students found a plethora of books to freely access throughout the day. There were two corners
of the classroom that were filled with books. In one corner of the classroom, non-fiction books were arranged by theme
for third graders to sift through during free time. There were ten non-fiction themed tubs, with each tub containing at
least fifteen books. These themes were aligned with the interests of the students with book themes such as: dinosaurs,
insects, animals of the land and sea, biographies, and even books about how things work. In the opposite corner of the
classroom, fiction books were arranged by popular authors, themes, or even level of difficulty. There were thirty-seven
tubs of books for third graders to wander through during free time, with each tub containing at least fifteen to twenty
books. These themed book tubs were also aligned with the interests of the students with popular themes such as: Horrible
Harry, Junie B. Jones, Magic Tree House, Berenstain Bears, and Dr. Seuss. From my observations at this highly utilized
library, this led me to wonder an essential question regarding classroom libraries: How can I arrange my future classroom
library so it may be intriguing to students?

Process & Product

In order to answer this proposed question, I looked to this
class of third grade students at Simpsonville Elementary in order to
collect some data. As a preface, the backgrounds of many of these
students are quite diverse. In a class of twenty-four students, four of
them are English Language Learners, two additional students have
an IEP, and there is a variety of reading levels and abilities. In order
for me to successfully and intentionally create a classroom library
for my potential third grade classroom, I decided to create a book
list based on the interests of these twenty-four third grade students.
During this time, I gave each student a sheet of paper and asked
them to write down their five favorite books (See Figure 1 for
Student Work Sample). Because the students in this third grade
class are drastically different in their reading levels and interests, I Figure 1: Sample Student Submission

was given a wide selection of books based on ability level and topic.
In order to create a meaningful classroom library, I wanted to create a space that was not only meaningful to
student interest but also aligned with various professional guidelines. For starters, I needed to collect the correct number
of books. The International Reading Association recommends providing at least seven books per student in a classroom
library (Seely-Flint, 2008). Therefore, while I only collected five books from each student, I tried to add additional
books to the classroom library set that were related to what students would be interested in. In addition, it is
recommended that the classroom library reflect[s] a range of texts, such as wordless books, picture books, young adult
novels, magazine, reference materials, [and] comic books (Seely-Flint, 2008). For this assignment, I ensured that each
category was included and reflected in the third grade classroom book list.
After data was collected by students and evaluated, I created a classroom book list that has been collected based
on the interests of these third grade students at Simpsonville Elementary. In addition, some of the book titled collected are
also based on books I thought students might enjoy based on what they had currently enjoyed reading. In this book list,
one will find a multitude of books with various themes for students to wander through and get lost in during their free
time. These books that were gathered were separated by theme, while keeping in mind the childs grade level. There are
books that are fitting for students of all interests, such as those who enjoy graphic novels, fairytales, animal books,
biographies, easy reads, advanced chapter books, texts in Spanish, and even prize-winning novels.
Reflection
From this inquiry project of creating a classroom library, I have discovered how important it is to create a space
that is based on student interests. For all intents and purposes, a teacher may have a set of books she may think is
wonderful for students to engage in. However, if the students arent using the library, it is essentially a wasted space. As a
future educator, I dont want my classroom library to be a wasted space. I have high hopes that it will one day be a
center that promotes and fosters literacy development. From the book list created, one would find a variety of texts for
students to engage and get lost in. In addition, many of these books might be considered pieces of literature that arent all
deemed as Newbery Award-Winning books or a Caldecott Medal earning text; in essence, some of these literacy
pieces may be deemed and labeled as crappy to some young students. With the utmost sincerity, if these books allow
children to actively engage in reading in order to broaden their literacy skills, then so be it! Just like Lori Norton-Meier
states in her article, In Defense of Crappy Literature, she says that the very presence of crappy literature in [the]
classroom allowedstudents to become better readers of and responders to literature (Norton-Meier, 2009). How could I
possibly deprive a child from reading a graphic novel series, such as Captain Underpants, who may have difficulty
reading fluently with a monotone voice? As odd as it may seem, what if this type of text that he or she is interested in may
foster literacy development with the texts somewhat outrageous dialogue? In addition, what about the students who
struggle to identify and understand what words mean? Simple repetitive text and imagery books, such as If You Give a
Mouse a Cookie, may foster this form literacy development.
From my work with this one fundamental question, I am coming to find that this book list is one small step to
creating an extensive, meaningful classroom library filled with a variety of rich, interesting texts. While groups of student
interests vary from year to year, my hope is that these beginning works may allow students to see what types of texts are
available for them to get lost in. In the future, I hope that these variety of texts may help each individual student who
comes into my classroom on his or her own pathway to literacy. Every student that will come into my classroom has
different a background, prior knowledge, reading strengths and needs, and interests. Through this continual development
in a classroom library through asking future students what their favorite books are, my hope is that students will want to
read for fun. From my time observing various schools, I am coming to find that a students interest in background play an
important role in a childs ability to understand what a text says. Amy Seely-Flint states it best when she says: Interest
fosters a desire to know more, while background knowledge on the topic enables readers to draw upon what they already
know to support comprehension (Seely-Flint, 2008). For all I know, one day I may have a student in my future classroom
who loves to read fairytales like Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty, yet struggles to comprehend what was previously
written in the text. Yet, this could be a teachable moment for a young student, as well as myself. If I have a whole themed
bucket of books labeled Fairytales, of course this young student will want to try to make sense of the texts she will read
because it is something that sparks her interest! Whether it be an award-winning text or a simple repetitive easy read, I am
a supporter of all forms of literature in the classroom.
Finally, this project has impacted me in a personal way. From working with these young third grade students and
getting their opinion this past semester, I am coming to find how much I care about student success. When I originally
asked the students if they would be on board for telling me their favorite books, I had to state my reasoning behind this
odd request. I explained to them how I think it is important that in my future classroom I will have books that my future
students would like to read. I added onto my thought by explaining how I believed that these students at Simpsonville
could be a huge help in giving me advice on some of the best books to add to my future classroom. Instantly, these third
grade students began writing, and then some erasing because they were so intent on telling me about the best books to
add. I also found that some students even began giving me a sales pitch on why I needed to get this book or that book
in my future classroom because it was one of their favorite books. From this project, I found that students care about the
books that are put into a future classroom library, and I also found how much I cared about these students. I can only hope
that one day I will become the teacher who puts a smile on a young readers face when he learns to read an advanced
chapter book on his own. I hope that as a teacher my classroom library will allow students to fall in love with reading, as
opposed to looking at reading as a daily chore. If I get my students to fall in love with reading and see them succeed in
their literacy development, I would consider myself a successful teacher. To me, thats better than any K-PREP score in
the world.
